Hi guys, I wonder if you can help me. As I’m now doing java development as a profession now, I’ve realized that I’m a little weak when it comes to fix, modify and understand code within large applications, and, needless to say, I need to find a way to get better at it. So, I was wondering if any experienced java developer could give me some advices and perhaps help me in getting a little better. Of course I know the basics, I’ve studied the theory, I know how to create classes, instantiate them, using interfaces etc – although this …

Hi guys, I wonder if you can help me at all. As some of you will know I do a bit of java development here and there but unfortunately I don't really have any programming background, like, I haven't studied computer science - I just learned (well, that's an overstatement) let's say that I'm still learning java and I'll learn still for a long while but my knowledge of software development is obviously very basic. What I'm trying to get to here is, I'd like to take the software development career further and, in addition to learn java, I'd like …

Hi all, I am hoping that the DaniWeb community might be willing to assist me in my research efforts. I am a researcher based in University College Cork (Ireland) and I am involved in a research study on the subject of software development in global virtual teams. As part of this study I am conducting a questionnaire. Coordination is often reported as being particularly challenging for global virtual teams engaged in software development. This questionnaire seeks to gather data relating to coordination issues in global virtual software development teams. As experienced practitioners in software development, I would very much welcome …

However each task is similar but different, in the way that operations on Task A is done in a different pattern to the operations done on task B. And the operations on any given specific task can change. So I need or would like to develop a program that has a core system and a …

I am interested in hiring a software developer but I do not know what should I be asking for when I post the job. My project consists in developing a software that can analyze an edge-matching puzzle game of my invention to produce as many possible solutions numbered, and also creating an online version of my game with different levels of difficulty. The possible solutions to my game could be exponentially high. I’ve heard that Java should be language and that to get the solutions the program should run simulations. Can you please give me your suggestions?

I'm making a chareer change into software development. Yes, I'm crazy. But more than that, I'm seriously concerned that North America and Western Europe is no longer known for creating and producing good products. We may not make much steal or have big factories mass producing TVs and radios, but that doesn't mean we don't have what it takes to make great intellectual products as well as great cars, movies, food, medicine, etc. I'm a creative person who is NOT going to quit creating just because I'm getting older or some kid in China will work for 80% less. To …

Most people welcomed the news that the Sony PlayStation 3 was slimming down, both in physical size and in terms of off the shelf pricing. The Linux crowd are not so impressed however. What it has got rid of, according to reports, is the option to run Linux under an Install Other OS option that is available on the fat PS3. It's always fun to stand and watch as two big names slug it out, and they don't come much bigger than Microsoft. Sophos, it has to be said, is no small fry either when it comes to the world of IT Security. So when a Sophos blog posting from it's Chief Technology Office, Richard Jacobs, started with the playground taunt equivalent of 'I've been kissing your mum' by saying "Windows 7's planned XP compatibility mode risks undoing much of the progress that Microsoft has made on the security front in the last few years and reveals the true colours of …

You really couldn't make this up if your tried very hard indeed. The ongoing saga which is best summed up as 'what will Apple ban today' has just got stranger than ever. Apparently all BitTorrent iPhone apps are toxic, as is the notion of superimposing your own face upon that of Jesus, not to mention a Twitter application that was refused a place in the app store because Twitter was down for maintenance when the Apple people tested it. The BitTorrent ban is an odd one. Although BitTorrent applications per se are not illegal, and the protocol itself is put …

MDY Industries developed a popular World of Warcraft bot by the name of MMOGlider. Popular because, I would imagine, it took much of the donkey work out of progressing through the virtual world by automating repetitive tasks. You know, the boring stuff such as slaying monsters and scavenging for loot. Jeez, why play the game at all if you let some automated software process do all that for you? Half the fun is in the levelling up, unless you are some numpty player with no soul, that is. Anyway, the Glider might just go down in history as the most …

Researchers at the University of Portsmouth are creating a rehabilitation programme for stroke victims that puts them onto a treadmill which immerses them into a virtual environment. Apparently the device works by using a series of moving images which essentially trick the brain of the patient into believing they are walking more slowly than is actually the case. This, I am assured, somehow encourages them to walk faster and to walk further. Wendy Powell, the PhD student who has developed the software says that the early results suggest patients using virtual rehabilitation may experience less pain than traditional physiotherapy techniques …

If you were to just take weekly media reports and monthly security researcher statistics as your metric, then I suspect it would be a safe bet to suggest that you would say software security vulnerabilities are on a steep upwards curve. Furthermore, it is just as likely that given the media exposure to such events as Microsoft Patch Tuesday and the furore when Adobe or Apple announce a hole has been discovered in a high profile product, you would say that things are only getting worse as far as the big software vendors are concerned. The thing is, when you …
