Hi people, I am currently teaching myself C++ with Stroustrup's "Programming, Principles and Practice using C++" and I'm stuck on one of the in-book exercises. It is a chunk of code (~180 lines) of buggy code that, when debugged properly, should create a calculator program. I have reached the limits of my ability and need some more help. There are 8 bugs in total, 5 syntax and 3 logic. I have debugged the syntax errors and now need help with the logic. I think I got one of the logic, so there *should* only be 2 left. Any help would …

Almost every programmer knows his name. He's a living legend in computers. His name is Bjarne Stroustrup, and he created the world's most popular programming language, C++. I had a chance to ask him a few questions. The first three of the questions I came up with, and the remainder I selected from the numerous questions suggested by DaniWeb community members. So sit back, and listen to the words of one of the greatest programming masters ever. (My questions are noted with "JC"; questions from the DaniWeb community are noted as "DW".) Hello all, As part of a homework assignment, we're to take a given buggy calculator and correct the errors. Once that's done, the assignment is to add the sqrt() and pow() functions to said calculator. This is from Stroustrup's Programming, Principles and Practices using C++. I've been working on the addition of the sqrt() function, but I can't seem to get it working. The current error is error C2665: 'sqrt' : none of the 3 overloads could convert all the argument types, and I haven't been able to figure out how to fix it. Any tips on how to proceed? …

While reading Stroustrup's "The C++ programming language", I was puzzled at 'declaring a pointer to an array of character strings and declaring a reference to an array of 10 integers', and I had to clear my mind on pointers to arrays. I am posting here the notes I made to get corrections/suggestions etc, and hoping that C++ novices like myself might find it useful. In the code snippets below, I have declared various array variables along with declaration of corresponding pointers. If 'abc' is the name of an array variable, 'abc_ptr' is the name I have given to its pointer. …

DaniWeb plans to interview Bjarne Stroustrup, the designer and original implementer of C++ and the author of many books on C++. This is truly a treat and rare opportunity for us as a community to talk to the father of C++. As the new editor-in-chief of DaniWeb's News and Reviews I would like to reach out and involve the entire community and ask for your suggestions. Rather that simply asking Mr. Stroustrup the questions that come to my mind I would like to hear from you what you would like to know. Suggest a specific question or a general topic. …
