Electricity can be produced many different ways, be it fission, fusion, solar, hydro, wind, tidal, coal, bio gas, oil, geothermal and so on. Some of that fuel will never (well almost never) run out. Electricity is just a way to store, move energy, and power something more or less cleanly.
Yeah, an electric car would be a nice, stenchfree, and quiet transportation.

You have a point here, electricity is about the most universally useful form of energy. It can power anything from your computer, your house, your handy, to your car. The use as mobile power like for a car needs lots more work and ideas.

That's part of the problem. No matter how absurd the definition given, there are some people out there who'd probably suggest it seriously if they'd heard of it.
Which is indeed the case with "acid oceans", which were the scare story the environmental movement used in the 1970s to get people riled up about "acid rain".

Note that all of the mass transit proponents live in southern California. They don't know about freezing temperatures, bridge bottlenecks, unpaved roads turning into quagmires, foot-deep snow on unshoveled walks, thunderstorms, and flooded sidewalks.
Note that mass transportation is not necessarily equal to public buses. :icon_cheesygrin:
But you still have to endure all of those just to GET to and from the transit.
The real problem is that, in most areas, not enough people make the same trip at the same time for even carpooling to work, let alone mass transit.
I usually see less than 3 people riding on our public transit buses whenever I see one.

Public transport, that's what that is. However, you could go roller-scating. Just make sure that wherever you go is always downhill. Use gravity power!
No you can't. In most areas, it's illegal to skate either in the street or on sidewalks. Skates are considered toys, not vehicles.
Taxis are very expensive. And they are not publicly owned.

True. With public transit, YMMV. The bus I used to ride to work (before I moved) was stuffed full (some people were forced to wait for later buses). But I've also been the only person on the bus. Public transit certainly isn't a silver bullet, and - as in most problems - there likely isn't a silver bullet to be had anyways.

I'd say use prisoners in giant gerbil wheels then. We certainly have enough of those and it's not like they have better things to do. Let them walk on wheels all day generating electricity.
(Edit: Clarification: I refer to convicted criminal prisoners - not people taken prisoner for labor.)

The last article I saw on the algae bed stuff said it has some very interesting potential, but the volume of algae beds required for full-scale plant operation would be enormous. I think it was many acres. I'll try to find the article link again when I get a few minutes to look for it.

I still like the idea of bubbling the exhaust of a coal plant through beds of algae.
Burning coal produces a heap of toxic substances (SO2, arsenic, cadmium, selenium etc.) that accumulate in the water and would kill your algae real quick.
Besides, what would you do with tons and tons of slimy algae?

Who says that's what they're really concerned with? The entire argument was that a small group (labeled 'socialists') are using a hot-button topic, which does have benefit, or at least meaning, for a larger group, to further their own ends. These 'own ends' do not necessarily have anything to do with the means (the hot-button topic) being used to reach them, other than the means-end relation.

They won't get those...
They'll get total control over everyone's life through the implementation of draconian schemes to limit travel and other freedoms in the name of the "environment".
All those schemes won't make for clean air and water as they'll ruin the economy which will mean that industry (and government and its subjects) will no longer have the funds to care about "clean" things, have to do whatever it takes just to survive.

I believe Japan already has this in place on it's trains. Or at least it's come up before, because the problem is quite rampant there.
