This crashed the first time I tried to post. Here we go again.

Downloaded and executed a file I shouldn't have. Immediately, explorer.exe started dying and then restarting, over and over again. AVG Free disabled itself and will not run or reinstall. Spy Sweeper corrupt -- won't uninstall or reinstall. SuperAntiSpyware corrupt and won't reinstall. System restore has no restore points, and they were present just a couple of days before this started.

I could manually try to load explorer.exe from task manager [file, new task]. i could also run Ad-Aware, which I ran multiple times, kept finding 5 Vundo trojans, then 9 Vundo, over and over again. Even though it said it removed them, they kept reappearing.

MSIE will not go to designated web sites, apparently hijacked by the trojans. It defaults to a fake looking MS search result page, which I have not clicked on, because it looks fake. I am writing this in Safari, which I happened to have on this machine.

I tried to run Windows Malicious S/W Removal Tool, but it did not seem to run, unless it ran in the background with no messages whatsoever. I ran ATF-Cleaner.exe, which seemed to work. MBA-M would not install. Ran ESET Online scanner, but did not read instructions closely enough and deleted the trojans it found. Here is that log:

While explorer.exe now stays on screen and does not crash, MSIE still is nonfunctional. I can access web sites, but I have to use an explorer window like My computer [NOT MSIE], and paste a URL into that explorer window -- it's like I;m fooling the OS or something.

I can also give you a "snapshot" log from What's Running 2.2 if you want.

For for giggles, I downloaded ComboFix but it would not load.

Uh, help?

Still having problems. After running ESET Online scan, explorer.exe seemed to work more stably, but I still couldn't install any new applications. I ran jv16 PowerTools 2009 to see if that might fix the registry problems, but after that explorer went to hell on me again.

Ad-Aware scan reflects virtumonde, with 5 registry keys identified:

Root: HKCR Path: clsid\{6d794cb4-c7cd-4c6f-bfdc-9b77afbdc02c}
Root: HKLM Path: software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\shellexecutehooks Value: {6d794cb4-c7cd-4c6f-bfdc-9b77afbdc02c}
Root: HKCR Path: clsid\{6d794cb4-c7cd-4c6f-bfdc-9b77afbdc02c}
Root: HKLM Path: software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\shellexecutehooks Value: {6d794cb4-c7cd-4c6f-bfdc-9b77afbdc02c}
Root: HKLM Path: software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\explorer\browser helper objects\Value: {6d794cb4-c7cd-4c6f-bfdc-9b77afbdc02c}

Ad-Aware says it removes [or quarantines] these exploits, but they reappear on subsequent scans.

Please help!!

Hi and welcome to the Daniweb forums :).

==========

After you have posted a log, take a look at it. The first one is fine. Your second is crap.

==

Please re-run hijackthis again, select Do a system scan and save a logfile. When notepad opens, go to the Format Tab and de-select Word Wrap.
Highlight the entire text and post the log back here.

==

Delete the MBA-M installation file that is on your pc at present.
Go back to download MBA-M again. Click on the link to download it. Select the "Save" option.
When the panel pops up to ask you where you wish to save the file, before choosing where, rename the file. I chose "bambam" in my screenshot just as an example,
Once you have saved it, try again to install it.

I ran Dr. Web scanner [Cureit.exe]. It took 9.5 hours, but stripped a lot of infections off the computer. Here's a log of it:

ljjyayxv.dll;c:\windows\system32;Probably Trojan.Packed.213;Incurable.Moved.;
foroheka.dll;C:\WINDOWS\system32;Trojan.Virtumod.1622;Deleted.;
kinosuzu.dll;C:\WINDOWS\system32;Trojan.Virtumod.1622;Deleted.;
minutara.dll;C:\WINDOWS\system32;Trojan.Virtumod.1622;Deleted.;
opnlkKDW.dll;C:\WINDOWS\system32;Trojan.Virtumod.1634;Deleted.;
UACbhaoybmv.dll;C:\WINDOWS\system32;Trojan.Packed.365;Deleted.;
UACnompxlrd.dll;C:\WINDOWS\system32;Trojan.Packed.365;Deleted.;
UACttjujdol.dll;C:\WINDOWS\system32;Trojan.Packed.365;Deleted.;
urqPhHwt.dll;C:\WINDOWS\system32;Trojan.Packed.213;Deleted.;

I was then able to install and run mba-m. Quick scan log:

Looks clean.

Yea! Should I be worried that combofix still won't load? I did run mba-m full scan again, and it showed no infections.

How is your pc running? Combofix should not be used without direction too.

Well, MSIE is working again, so it does not appear to be hijacked any more. I'm going to try to reinstall AV and antispyware apps now, and see if they will install. So far so good, anyway!

Tried to re-install AVG 8.0 build 237. Install failed with this detail explanation: Local machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for registry key HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows: creating registry key....
Error 0x80070005

Any thoughts?

Yeah, forget AVG and install Avast! or Avira :).
