I suggested that he not reboot to begin with Crunchie, so I imagine that is why Kevin didn't do it. I just wanted to be certain that at least most of what was going to be found would be removed.

Ok here's the list. I have purposely left off items having to do with your printer, your scanner, you photos, and your dial-up modem sometimes those programs are so darned touchy that if you disable something you end up with a headache. Take a look at them, see if you need them and then you decide on those, I will list those at the bottom with ***'s above that list.
Here is the list of those you CAN turn off without problems:

igfxtray-Quick access to the control panel via a System Tray icon for graphics based upon the Intel chipsets.These chipsets are often included on motherboards. Available via Start -> Settings -> Control Panel
igfxhkcmd- Installed by the Intel 810 and 815 chipset graphic drivers. If you want the Ctrl+Alt+F12 or similar keypresses to access Intel's customised graphics properties, you need it, otherwise not. Can be disabled via the Display Properties in Control Panel.
igfxpers-Associated with the Common User Interface module for Intel graphics cards
RealTray-System Tray Icon for Real Player
ISUSPM Startup-Install Shield Update Scheduler. This automatically search for and does updates for software. You can do this manually
ISUSScheduler-same as above really. Do it manually.
MimBoot-starts Music Match Jukebox. Do it manually
MMTray-Music Match task tray icon
QuickTime Task-System tray icon for Quick Time viewer
dscactivate-Dell's Remote Support Program.
DellSupportCenter-just what it says. Can be run manually...there possibly will several of these listed by the way, turn them all off.
Ad-Watch-Part of Lavasoft Ad-aware Plus - realtime spyware-monitor watching your memory and registry for spyware that tries to install or change your system>really your choice. As you can see, it did little to nothing in protecting your computer.
SunJavaUpdateSched-sun java update scheduler. Do it manually. This doesn't work half the time anyway.
MSMSGS-Windows Messenger, not an IM program, but the program that constantly pops up and gives you supposed needed messages concerning Windows. Turn it off.
Adobe Reader Speed Launch-supposedly speeds start of Adobe Reader...maybe by a couple seconds, turn it off.

If you don't need them then by all means turn the off.
IPHSend-related to AOL software. If you use AOL leave it, if you don't you can remove from auto start.
IntelMeM-can alert you if the telephone line is being used when you're trying to get online (when you're using dial-up), if you are NOT using dial-up then you don't need it.
Corel Photo Downloader-related to Corel Photo Album.
CanonSolutionMenu
CanonMyPrinter
SSBkgdUpdate-scanner related
OpwareSE4-scanner related

To turn all off using Mike Lin's program just open the program and go through the various tabs there. When you see one of the programs I have listed just take out the check mark. Some things may be listed under more than one tab so remove check marks from all the ones you find double listed. Some tabs may have nothing listed at all. That is also normal, don't worry. After you have removed the check marks ok out of the program and reboot the computer.

Since the MBA-M, ESET Scanner and your own anti-virus program have removed the infected files you should now run HJT again and place check marks next to the following entries if they remain:
O3 - Toolbar: CouponBar - {5BED3930-2E9E-76D8-BACC-80DF2188D455} - C:\WINDOWS\CouponBarIE.dll (file missing)

Now you java program is way, way out of date.

Sometimes nice to know am not needed this early in the morning :) Exactly what I was thinking - was just in the process of seeing exactly what is current build of Java (am getting V6 - update14 as latest build on this end)

BTW: using Winkey+R and running MSConfig - Windows Config should allow you to disable most start-up processes, but sometimes the 3rd party utility will pull the more tricky buggers

Hey KL, that's an argument I'm NOT going to have with you ;)

Suffice it to say that I believe that msconfig is for "diagnostic" startup rather than as a "startup manager." Frankly, HJT is a better startup manager. And I'm sure Judy will have her say . . . LOL!

Will keep an eye your way. One thing though, before you call it a night. As Crunchie likes to point out, MBA-M doesn't run at full strength in Safe Mode, so if after the scan you can at least boot and run in normal boot, would be a good idea - just let run over-night :)
Keep us posted as to how you go.
@Judy - good point on the Scheduled Tasks. As an aside to the Task Manager tip, would suggest SysInternal's Process Manager, as should give a more accurate look-over as to what is still running in the back-ground

Right now kaninelupus I doubt he could get that on his computer, plus for now he really should limit what he attempts to download to removal tools at best. He very easily found those two processes that PP told him to look for so I would advise against this for now. We don't really want to "push the envelope" at this time.

Plus he said he can access Task Manager in Normal mode so the question of running MBA-M in safe is somewhat moot. If he was able to stop those processes from running while in normal mode then he should then immediately be able to run MBA-M also in normal mode. Of course if that is totally impossible then safe will have to do, but it will not fully scan all files in safe mode.

Good to hear... is mid-arvo here, so will may not get to spot any progress till morning before heading to work.

BTW; what AV/protection are you running. Did spot the iSafe process (which usually pertains to eTrust AV), but would have expected a greater presence if a fully functional AV/Suite were in in working order. Would highly look at installing a decent AV once things cleaned up

Hi all - I ran MBA-M and it detected and cleaned a bunch. I'm able to now boot up in normal mode without the "Police Pro" issues. I've posted MBA-M and HJT logs (after cleanup) below. I'd appreciate if someone could give a look when you have a chance to see if there is anything else we need to address.

A few things-

-After hitting remove on MBA-M, it said one file could not be removed - windows/qcfbc.wbg
-kanine, to answer you AV question, I was having issues getting my AV to update which I'm guessing was linked to some of this malware. It is updating now and appears to now be running normally.

Your Hijackthis log suggests that you have not rebooted the PC since running MBA-M anyway, which is required before posting the logs.

I suggested that he not reboot to begin with Crunchie, so I imagine that is why Kevin didn't do it. I just wanted to be certain that at least most of what was going to be found would be removed.

Crunchie is correct Kevin, you need now to update MBA-M, do another Full Scan and Remove all found, and this time Reboot. But FIRST
Go to Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. Scroll through that list and find
AntipyProex (AntipPro2009_100) svchasts.exe, should be near the top of the list...when you do, double click to open it's properties. IF it is running Stop it by pushing the stop button which will be visible if it is running. The go to it's Start up type, right there in the middle, and change it's type from Automatic to Disabled. Apply and then close Services. Then do the following that I mentioned last night since you all ready are in Control Panel go to
Scheduled Tasks to see if there are any unusual entries there. This infection is very similar to a couple others which put a scheduled task entry in order to download more infections or just start the processes needed to run it. If you see something you didn't add yourself, delete it. You might need to do this in Safe Mode, but try it first in normal mode.
After doing that then Update and run the new MBA-M scan and remove items found, Reboot the computer and run a new HJT scan. Post back with both logs, even if the MBA-M log shows clean we DO need to see the full log anyway.

Judy,

I had already ran MBA-M and rebooted prior to seeing your last post. So I was going to start the process over, however in looking through the Services list I did not see the exe you described above. I believe my AV already removed that exe. After running the first MBA-M, my AV was able to update which it had been prevented from doing for a while now (something I was looking into but clearly not urgently enough). The updated AV detected that exe and deleted it, so I believe that is why we aren't seeing it in the Services list. Also, I checked Scheduled Tasks and don't see anything unusual in there.

So...here is the MBA-M log I ran this morning after updating the definitions. I then rebooted and ran HJT and that log is below as well. Would appreciate if you let me know if anything else jumps out from the logs. Again - thanks so much - I really appreciate the help!

I hesitate to post here because I don't want to hijack his thread and make him be unable to fix his pc... but in the last few days this particular program has started popping up on tech forums everywhere. The biggest issue about this particular virus is that it hijacks whatever windows component that is used to open .exe files and has them instead run the virus' application. I personally had this virus attack my computer thanks to a computer illiterate person in the house mindlessly clicking on windows on a browser. It was real shocker to me when I woke up this morning to this hassle myself and their explanation that "I think something's wrong with the computer".

I attempted to manually remove the virus by doing a complete search of the computer with Windows Explorer's search function using parameters of all files that were modified overnight and then comparing that list of files to a list of actual authentic files, then before removing the unknown files I double-checked online using another pc and confirmed that all of those files were indeed part of the Windows Police Pro virus package. (It would've been quicker to just use the list of bad files provided before doing the system search.. but I'm leery of just openly trusting websites even ones claiming to be helping.) After confirming that all of those files were indeed bad I proceeded to delete all of them.

First I went to Program Files > Windows Police Pro and deleted that entire directory. This means that although the code to interrupt .exe's and other things was still on my computer, that at least those horrid popups claiming to be scanning my pc were gone. Next I deleted the following entries from my search list:

Anything with the following words: dbsinit, desot, svchasts, dddesot
ppp3.dat
ppp4.dat
bennuar.old
sysnet.dat

The wonderful thing was that the virus itself was no longer on my computer so it couldn't do any future damage, but the registry keys of course were still there and the .exe's were still off-limits to me. Now without the virus to empower it my regedit was safe from being redirected to run through the virus application, but the code was still there in the registry so windows popped up a window claiming it didn't know how to handle a file of type .exe

I then fixed the no .exe loading problem by using a self-created repair file in notepad (only the stuff between the </---code---> needs to be placed).

I saved this file as fix.reg in notepad as an "All Files". I then ran it. Windows popped up a notice asking me if I was sure I wanted that added to the registry (I did). After registrying that key I rebooted my pc and all of the .exe's now worked once more. Which means I could finally run my regedit program!

Now came the regedit fun time. I searched for all of the same names as above and removed any instance I found (for anyone trying to duplicate what I did be careful on this part, if you're an amateur, as some of the entries are connected to your browsers or important operating files for your pc).

Badda boom, badda bing.. the virus and any nasty after-effects was completely gone from my system as if it had never happened. Of course it did waste 2 and a half hours of my day (mostly spent on the initial search trying to figure out exactly what my family member had accidently allowed onto our pc). -_-

What I did of manually removing the application works at completely cleaning the pc of the infection, but if you are unfamiliar with regedit you may be wiser to use a program such as hijackthis! to locate and remove the registry keys for you. (I personally prefer the manual route since tools are only as good as their latest update and some viruses will actually latch onto your anti-virus and anti-malware software... but they are absolutely wonderful for people who do not have experience working manually.)

Well you just DID ATTEMPT to hijack this thread. It is NOT appreciated. IF you had read this entire thread, and you obviously have not, you would have seen that this infection CAN be removed using the tools we have directed for use here, including removing infected Registry Entries and definitely NOT with HJT. If you knew also anything about HiJackThis, and you obviously do not, you would also know that it is #1 NOT considered a Fix tool but a scan tool. #2.Yes, fixes can be done with HiJackThis but should only be done AFTER other steps have been completed.
Please read the HiJackThis Tutorial and note the explicit comments given there.

HijackThis is an advanced tool, and therefore requires advanced knowledge about Windows and operating systems in general. If you delete items that it shows, without knowing what they are, it can lead to other problems such as your Internet no longer working or problems with running Windows itself. You should also attempt to clean the Spyware/Hijacker/Trojan with all other methods before using HijackThis. If you allow HijackThis to remove entries before another removal tool scans your computer, the files from the Hijacker/Spyware will still be left on your computer and future removal tools will not be able to find them.

Now, back to you Kevin, The logs look great and YOU are correct in all your comments concerning the removal and search for the files noted in question.
One of the steps given by "our thread hijacker" was correct, you need to go to C:\Program Files\ and look for the folder Windows Police Pro if you find it there, delete that ONE folder.
Now just a few more steps to do.
Since the MBA-M, ESET Scanner and your own anti-virus program have removed the infected files you should now run HJT again and place check marks next to the following entries if they remain:

O3 - Toolbar: CouponBar - {5BED3930-2E9E-76D8-BACC-80DF2188D455} - C:\WINDOWS\CouponBarIE.dll (file missing)

O8 - Extra context menu item: &AIM Toolbar Search - C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\AIM Toolbar\ieToolbar\resources\en-US\local\search.html

When you have placed the check marks click the Fix Checked button and Exit HJT.
Reboot.
Now you java program is way, way out of date. You are showing version 6 update 3. Current version is 6 update 15.
Go HERE and download the Offline Install file and save it to your desk top. Don't install yet.

Once you have downloaded that then close all browsers and go to Start, Control Panel, Add/Remove and look for ALL versions of Java listed there. Uninstall ALL of them. Once they are all uninstalled then go to the downloaded file on the desktop and double click to install. When the install is complete go back to the download page and on the right side you will see Verify Now. Click that to verify the installation was successful.

Do all that, reboot and run another HJT scan and post that new log, I will have a one or two more things you should do.

Looks great. Now a couple of suggestions;
You have a huge number of auto starting programs there which are not needed and therefore running all the time in the background and using valuable resources AND slowing your start up time. I would recommend removing those which can easily be run manually when needed.

Did you purchase AdAware? If not then I would recommend disabling the AdAware Service which runs all the time, it doesn't virtually nothing except run and use resources in the free version.
You have a program on there Viewpoint Media Player which is considered foistware or adware. It comes in with the install of different programs, AOL, AIM, versions of Netscape, certain Adobe products, to name some. It is called foistware because you didn't ask for it or personally choose to install it. I would recommend it's removal.
First you have to stop the processes it starts up;
Go to Task Manager and find ViewpointService.exe and
ViewMgr.exe
Highlight and click "End Process".
Next do the following;
Click on Start > Run and type: services.msc
Scroll down the list and find the service called "Viewpoint Manager Service"
When you find the service, double-click on it.
In the Properties Window > General Tab that opens, click the "Stop" button.
From the drop-down menu next to "Startup Type", click on "Disabled".
Now click "Apply", then "OK" and close any open windows.

Next go to Add/Remove and uninstall these if they are present:
Viewpoint, Viewpoint Manager, Viewpoint Media Player.
Finally go to C:\Program Files\ and delete these folders if they are present; ViewManager & Viewpoint

Now you will note that some of the infected files were found in the temp files. I would recommend that you keep these cleaned out a bit better. You can use the built in Disk Clean up or a program like ATF-Cleaner or CCleaner. But keep these down, ok?
I also strongly recommend you install SpywareBlaster. A must have FREE program to help you surf safer. It can block all kinds of spyware that gets delivered through your Web browser, IE and Firefox. It prevents the installation of ActiveX-based spyware, adware, dialers, browser hijackers, and other potentially unwanted programs. It can also block spyware/tracking cookies in IE, Mozilla Firefox, Netscape, and many other browsers, and restrict the actions of spyware/ad/tracking sites with it's Restricted Sites section. AND it does ALL of this WITHOUT running in the background. Download, Install, Update and Enable All. Just check manually for updates every week or so. It doesn't update that often but probably on an average once a month.

You also need to set a new, clean Restore Point. To do this do the following:
Right Click My computer.
Choose Properties
When System Properties opens choose the System Restore Tab.
Place a check mark in Shut down System Restore.
You will probably get a message telling you it will be shut down, click ok or yes.
Allow it to shut down.
Wait a moment. Then go back in and take that check mark Out so that System Restore will turn back on.

Keep MBA-M, do at least weekly quick scans with it, Updating BEFORE each scan. It does have updates daily sometimes more than once a day so always update before scanning. If the Quick Scan finds something then have it remove whatever is found, reboot and immediately check for updates again and then do a Full Scan just to be safe.
Unless you have other questions or concerns it looks to me like the computer is clean and if there are no more questions you can mark this solved.

Thanks Judy...one last question, and perhaps a silly one...you mentioned I have a huge number of auto starting programs there which are not needed and therefore running all the time in the background and using valuable resources AND slowing my start up time.....how do I identify which programs this relates to (I presume in the HJT log..?) and how do I disable from auto start-up? I remember doing this years ago on another computer, but can't recall how to about this?

Give me a minute and I will give you a list. Easiest way is to use Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel. Free program. Download and install and you'll find it in the Control Panel with a little computer icon labeled Start up. Back shortly with the list.

Hey KL, that's an argument I'm NOT going to have with you ;)
Suffice it to say that I believe that msconfig is for "diagnostic" startup rather than as a "startup manager." Frankly, HJT is a better startup manager. And I'm sure Judy will have her say . . . LOL!

MSConfig, or Microsoft System Configuration Utility, (or simply System Configuration in Windows Vista) is a utility to troubleshoot the Windows startup process. Key word being troubleshoot.
I know PP prefers HJT to control start ups but using a program like Mike Lin's makes things so much easier. Using msconfig makes it TOO easy to accidently turn off something you might need rather than something you don't need.
KL, you really need to start researching your advice before you post it, this is getting to be a real habit here.

Now Kevin, I am so glad we all could be of service and we were able to get things cleaned up so quickly. One of the MAIN reasons was your ability to take it slow and deliberate and not go randomly running around downloading unneeded programs, clicking wildly as so many do. You read and followed the instructions slowly and deliberately exactly as given and that was the key element here. YOU did a great job!
If anything else crops up, and I hope it doesn't don't hesitate to come back. We are all here.

i just had to clean this today.. malware bytes takes care of it. what you need to do is to log into safemode and delete the windows police folder from program files. then install and run malwarebytes several times to clean the infection. i havent found any residual effects from it yet.. will keep you posted.. it seems from the research i have done it is new.

Other observations with this malware (or one looking just like it)
EXE files are vectored through something identifying as desote.exe; removing that file completely breaks the EXE handling vector. Cannot get into regedit in any fashion. A process called svchasts.exe was running; deleted it from task manager and it has not come back.

We may have a doorstop if I can't work out a way to reassociate EXE files to work, as I can't find the original XP CD on this box.

OOPS - responded without checking the tail end of the thread. Will start a new one.

hing your advice before you post it, this is getting to be a real habit here.

I wasn't putting in as advice, but simply stating a fact in response to comment from Kevin that he vaguely remembered there was a way to do it.... and given the fact the OP has demonstrated an ability to research things before jumping to response, was comfortable putting that tit-bit in (certainly wouldn't advise that to anyone likely to stop start-up processes without checking first). Personally use CCleaner myself as well as MSconfig, but have the experience to do so, and the sense to look-up unknown processes.

NB: do remember I did advise to wait for feedback on legitimacy of posted site, as had not had the time to check up on the site and didn't want the OP bricking his system... I have taken advice on board

Having similar problems with this...

On boot to normal mode, WPP pops up and does its thing.

On boot to safe mode w/ networking, I just get a black screen.

Any ideas?
