Has My IE6 Browser Been HiJacked? HiJackThis Log file Here - please help!

Hi there,

I wonder if anyone can please help or advise me? I am very limited in my knowledge of spyware and I am not too hot on the XP operating system - I'm just a novice! That's why I found this forum for help.

I have been having a few problems - well I think I might be?

I have noticed recently when I click on a link to go to a web page, or open the browser, the page opens as normal - but perhaps a little slower than normal. Also the information you normally see in the left-hand corner of browser, displays the address of the page being opened etc.. that's all normal I believe?

However I then get this - opening page about:blank... This comes after the information tells you which www. page is being opened. ie. opening page http://www.yahoo.com then you see : opening page about blank... As this happens the progress / download bar reloads (at botttom of browser).

Is this normal? It's just I have never previously noticed this! Am I being paranoid or what? Is my page being redirected somewhere or is someone monitoring my activities? A hacker perhaps? The system seems slow and sluggish also - more than normal!

I have run spybot, adaware, Spyware doctor, Microsoft Antispyware, Ewido plus a couple of others. Some have found things and removed them, but I still get the same message in the browser - opening page about: blank...

I have run the programme HighJackThis and have included a log file if that helps?

I would be grateful of any advice on this issue as I am concerned.

Thanks for your help and advise. Listen I am a complete novice when it comes to computers! However I would like to give your ideas a try. HJT I am completely new too - if I make the changes within that programme can they be reverted? Do they affect the registry or what? What I don't want to do is mess-up my system and not be able to sort the problems!

Regarding: ALCXMNTR.EXE

That appears to be to do with Realtek AC97 audio ...? That is installed on my system, so I presume if I remove it, that won't work? Bit weary on removing that?

Ahh, you're right on both parts... my bad

First off, about the fixing mistakes....the way this works, ya need to be in a PERMENANT folder to have it save changes. So, what ure gonna have to do is first create a new folder in Program Files.

To do this, open My Computer > Local Disk (C: ) > Program Files. While in here, right click, choose 'New Folder' , and rename it HJT.

Then, after this, you need to find the current location of HJT and drag it into this new folder. From looking at your log, its located at:

C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\Local settings\Temp\Temporary Directory 2

To access this, however, you will need to unlock the files. To do this, go (inside the My Computer window) to Tools > Folder Options > View > Show Hidden Files and Folders

After finding HJT, drag it into its new folder inside Program Files.

About the Alcxmntr.exe... Yes, you're right, it IS in fact part of Realtek sound. However, its also 'slyware'--although it's installed with the program, it sends usage data back to the Realtek corporation....so YES, to answer your question, you can leave it be.

After doing all of this, post a new HJT log, and we'll work from there.

ALCXMNTR.EXE This is for Realtek however, it is a "monitor". Very mild spyware so up to you if you want to remove it or not, but your Audio will still work if you do.

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /installquiet /keeploaded

This is actually part of NVidia

However fixing it in HJT will only disable it at startup, so you are not hurting anything, but I would not delete the file.

Demented, are ya sure? If ya look at CastleCops (searching nwix.exe), ya find several entries, one of which is :
nwiz.exe /installquiet
, which is the same listing as in the log.

EDIT: Also, do ya kno anything about:

S3tray.exe (without the 2), is part of a taskbar for S3 based chipset graphics cards. Do ya think its the same thing?

ALRITE, lets work on that log, Mike49. I apolegize for all the confusion.

Let's begin by verifying that mistakes made CAN be corrected.

Open HJT and click the 'Config' bar. Inside this, under the 'Main' tab, be sure that 'Make backups before fixing items is checked. If it isn't, recheck it, close HJT, open it, and verify it stays checked.

Ok, time to fix some entries. Be sure to close ALL OTHER WINDOWS before hitting 'Fixed Checked'. Run HJT, and check the following:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - <default> - (no file)
R3 - URLSearchHook: ScriptInocUI Class - - (no file)
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain =
O17 - HKLM\Software\..\Telephony: DomainName =

O17 - HKLM\System\CS1\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain =
O17 - HKLM\System\CS2\Services\Tcpip\Parameters: Domain =

Also, do you know anything about this entry?

Do you know about the IP address below? If you don't recognize it, check it in HJT and have HJT fix it.

After running this, and fixing the entries, restart your computer, run HJT, and post a new log back.

This is legit (notice the nwiz in brackets)

If it was like these it would be malicious
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [csrss] nwiz.exe /installquiet /keeploaded
or
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Norton Wizzard] nwiz.exe /installquiet /keeploaded

On this one it belongs to S3 Tray Icon
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [S3TRAY2] S3tray2.exe

This here needs to go
O23 - Service: FreezeScreenSaver - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\system32\FreezeScreenSaver.exe

You will need to stop and disable the service first, then delete it with HijackThis' Delete an NT Service option like I did here
