I scanned my computer and saved this log. I really don't know what to do with this. What am I supposed to fix? Can someone give me some advice because I'm about to just check everything and delete it all.

Short expert summary and action plan

Several responders were on the right track: the HijackThis entries you posted show a classic browser‑hijack/adware pattern (fake/duplicate startup items, a rundll‑style VBE helper and Internet Explorer helper/toolbar activity) — behaviour historically associated with the CoolWebSearch family. This explains why the machine could block security sites and keep restoring bad settings. (en.wikipedia.org)

Immediate, safe steps (do these first)

  1. Quarantine the machine: unplug network/Wi‑Fi and make a copy of irreplaceable data to external media.
  2. Reboot to Safe Mode and run the specialty remover that @caperjack advised (it targets CoolWebSearch variants), then follow with a current adware/anti‑malware scan (for example Malwarebytes/AdwCleaner). After those runs, reboot and repeat scans until no active detections remain. (theregister.com)

Post‑cleanup checks you should perform

  • Hosts file: open %WinDir%\System32\drivers\etc\hosts and remove any unexpected redirects (reset to the default hosts file if unsure). Microsoft documents how to reset it safely.
  • Verify suspicious files/entries (the odd Startup winlogon.exe, toolbar DLLs, unknown BHOs): use Autoruns/Process Explorer and verify file signatures with Sigcheck; any program named like a core Windows process that lives outside C:\Windows\System32 is almost certainly malicious. If you find copies, note their paths, quarantine them, and examine the HijackThis backups before deleting. (support.microsoft.com)

If problems persist
CoolWebSearch variants were (and can be) hard to remove completely — a clean reinstall is often the fastest, most reliable cure. After cleaning or reinstalling, patch the OS (or move off Windows XP), reinstall up‑to‑date AV/anti‑malware, and change online passwords because credential theft is possible. (theregister.com)

Notes tied to replies in this thread

  • : correct to run the specialized tool in Safe Mode and to run HijackThis from a permanent folder so backups persist.
  • and : good call to check the hosts file and to be suspicious of non‑standard rundll/winlogon items — follow those leads after the automated removers finish.

If you want, post the fresh scan log after running the steps above and list any files you could not remove; that will make targeted advice easier.

How to start computer in safe mode

reboot computer and post a new log

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called C:\HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Unzip HijackThis into this folder. When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary.

Hello,

This is a log of a Windows XP system with SP1, and it has a virus on it. I am not sure, but you can look at the various websites -- McAfee, Symantec -- and see what viruses like to edit the hosts file to make a number of the antivirus vendors unaccessable from that computer.

It might be Sasser. I am not in a position that I can dig deep for you, but I do know you have a virus or spyware problem.

Christian

caperjack is right- the Windows Security Assistant/rundll32.vbe entries indicate a CoolWebSearch infection.

Also, after you run the removal utilities, do a search for file named "hosts" on your system. Open it in Notepad and make sure that aside from some lines of comments at the beginning, it only contains the following entry:

localhost

If you find other 127.0.0.1 entries, delete them and save the file. Those other host entries will prevent you from going to the URLs associated with the 127.0.0.1 (localhost) address.

Alright I ran CWShredder in safe mode fixed, rebooted, ran hijackthis again, and I have posted the new log below. Please check the log below and tell me if it fixed the problem because I really can't tell.
