Hi,
I was advised in the Hardware forum to do this.
My modem seems to connect itself at different times. This has started since I got Call Forwarding, and a program that enables me to answer the phone when I am online(or I can ignore the caller, etc..a screen pops up telling me what I can do with the call)............
But at various times my modem seems to connect by itself..this morning when I got up my computer was online by itself....anyway, I unchecked the "connect automatically" button on my shortcut........
The file in my HijackThis(from NetZero)-I've tried to delete completely.I am no longer with NetZero....anyway.......I'm trying my best to explain..please check results...Thanks, alot.
George

The HijackThis log points at a legitimate helper app, Internet Call Manager (ICM.EXE), running from the Startup group; that type of program watches a dial-up line and can interact with the modem (incoming-call popups, voicemail, answering, etc.), so it is the prime suspect for an unsolicited connection. noticed the same O4 startup entry and ’s anti‑spyware sweep was a good first step; after removing spyware the next focus is autoruns, services and the OS autodial settings. (systemlookup.com)

Practical isolation steps (order matters): temporarily prevent the ICM process from starting, then reboot and watch if the phantom dials stop. Disable the ICM startup entry from the System Configuration utility (msconfig → Startup tab) or remove the shortcut from the Start Menu “Startup” folders (both the user and All Users Startup folders). If ICM is no longer wanted, uninstall it from Add/Remove Programs. Using msconfig for a controlled disable/reboot cycle helps confirm whether that program is the cause. (learn.microsoft.com)

Windows can also perform automatic dialing independently of a single program. The browser/OS autodial behavior is controlled by the EnableAutodial Internet Settings registry value (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\EnableAutodial) and can be used to stop IE/OS from initiating a dial. In addition, the Remote Access Auto Connection Manager (RasAuto) service can create connections when some program queries a remote resource; review that service’s startup type if autodials continue. (learn.microsoft.com)

If the unwanted connects persist after disabling ICM and changing autodial settings, the system event logs will show what actually started the RAS dial. RasClient events in the Application log record when a connection is started, succeeded, failed or terminated (Event IDs such as 20221/20227), which points to the initiating component and error codes to troubleshoot further. Also inspect Scheduled Tasks and any security/AV update tasks (many AV/updaters will try to connect on a schedule). A fresh HijackThis log taken after the above changes will make remaining autoruns obvious. (learn.microsoft.com)

Hi Caperjack,
I've done all that you said(just want to confirm, you say in 2nd. paragraph to reboot to safe mode to run "swshredder"-did you mean the cwshredder??I don't know if they are 2 separate programs..Anyway I did CW Shredder twice. Here is the result after the CWShredder:

Swshreder is a typo ,sorry ,i will fix in my canned speech, also do this before we use hijackthis ti fix anything ,.

Important: Create a folder on the C: drive called HJT.
You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT.
Unzip HijackThis into this folder. When you run HijackThis from this folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary.

Have Hijack This fix the following by placing a check in the appropriate boxes and selecting fix checked. Make sure all browser and all Windows Explorer windows are closed before fixing.

Lok is Clean now!

Prevention programs below .

After you get it all fixed and things are working good ,Download and install these two programs to help stop Spyware .

Spywareblaster

Keep Up-to-Date!
The most important key to maintaining a secure computer is keeping your protection up-to-date.

also check how i got infected in the first place .

Also a trip to windows updates is always good for critical updates and SP1's

Hi,
Thanks for all your help.Do you mean to install those spyware programs above the Adaware and SpyBot??????

All appears to be working well. I've unchecked the "connect automatically" button on the dial-up, and the computer has not tried to go online by itself so far.....The only thing I fiond is that when I click on the dial up and then press connect..it says unable to make connection. But when I do it the second time, it connects????Wonder why?
This seems to be after the computer has been sitting awhile?
George

Don't know the answer to the miss connect .
But about those programs ,they are spyware blocking programs ,not spyware removal programs .I have all 3 install and updated regulary and haven't had a spyware problem since install ing last year

Thanks............have a great week!
George
