I'm currently shopping for a new filesystem and was looking for suggestions. The reason I'm in the market for this is because I am trying to deal with space issues. I've got alot of very large (50gb+) but sparsely populated files ripe for compression but they are more or less constantly in use.
Basically this all adds up to x requirements:
- Transparent Compression - This has to be settable per-file and preferably per-directory as well. Full filesystem compression is NOT an option.
- Supported in Mainline Kernel - No FUSE nonsense. I'm looking for actual usage here and I don't have the patience for games.
- Good Error Recovery - I don't think I need to explain myself here.
- Speedy Overall - Again no explanation needed.
- Actually Stable - I'm not interested in unofficial patches or beta filesystems.
So.... what are my options? ZFS would have made the cut but it's not supported in the mainline kernel.
