Christina's comment though cited "hypocrisy" or failure to adhere to her expectations of what "real Christian" entailed as the metric for her lowered estimate. That is where I believe the estimate becomes meaningless.

MY expectations?? Actually, that would be the Bible's expectations. =/ I'm not God you know.

Wow.. good post. I didn't even think to mention all those things.

Given that even Christians cannot agree on the definition of "real Christian", any number that you throw out for "real" Christians is essentially meaningless. Therefore if 80% claim to be Christian then you have to just accept that as the case. If your benchmarks are to be the measure instead, then I would figure the truer figure to be close to 3%, not 50%.

I guess.

So purpose is only established through belief in a God? It must be externally imposed rather than self-directed? Purposeful towards whom or what? Your understanding of purpose seems rather narrowly constrained.

Belief in God is not the only way to find purpose in one's life but go ask JoshSCH and he'll tell you that he believes life has no purpose whatsoever.

My purpose is purposeful for of course me, my God, and my life. How is my understanding of this "rather narrowly constrained?"

Thats because dna wants to make more dna and have that dna well looked after.

So girls like a strong healthy man, and to be with other women for nurture support but not kissing (instinctively in general , there being exceptions as always).

Boys like as many girls as possible so they can generate dna at a cracking rate. (instinctively in general , there being exceptions as always) So one girl, two girls dna don't care, the chemicals are released and the buttons are pushed regardless.

God told Abraham he would have as many children as there are stars in the sky... through a monogomous marriage? go Abes!

I hope everyone realises I'm a happy go lucky guy that loves dry humour, and I'm basically having fun with this whole thing. But, I'm not being totally flippant either.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Religion_in_the_United_States
And I quote:"According to the 2001 American Religious Identification Survey (discussed below), 80% of the U.S. is Christian "

Just because most people will say they are Christian, that doesn't mean they really are Christian. There are some people that call themselves "Christians" and then go out to the bar, strip clubs, parties, etc. Their real title is "hypocrite." And a lot of those "Christians" don't even go to church except for Christmas and Easter. So in reality, it's probably only 50% of the U.S. is truly Christian.

christina>you 820 Posting Sage Featured Poster

Can we just get back to the fact that in most cases religion doesn't help you. Praying to something that we don't even know exists is rather pointless in my opinion, that time could be much better spent.

You call that a fact? It's an opinion. I could say the same thing about living your life with no purpose whatsoever... how does that help?

People don't know God exists because they've never tried to believe.

Actually, there are tons of churches here.. most baptist.. they have huge, 3,4,5 story buildings in which they even have basketball courts, youth group rooms, and stunning, huge churches. But, here is my prying question: Why does god need his own house? Why not pray on your own.. or go to other people's houses.. Why does he need a huge, expensive building? Christianity, and almost all religions for that matter, suck tons of cash from its members.. It's a blood-sucking, brainwashing cult.

Really? Is your community full of wealthy people? Because that's amazing. My church is in the process of building a recreation center for the youth.

What do you mean why does God need his own house? It's not like there's this one huge church in the whole world that everyone on the planet has to go to. It's a lot of churches that allow people everywhere to worship and fellowship as they please. And that's where we get into denominations.
Most churches are not expensive buildings...

christina>you 820 Posting Sage Featured Poster

Churches were made to help people get saved, strengthened, and feel comfortable around people who believe the same way they do.

Churches are not rich. Contrary to the beliefs of my community and even surrounding churches, my church that seats 1200 people is not at all wealthy. You may think that everyone in the church tithes and gives an offering every Sunday... but that's completely untrue. Almost half of the congregation doesn't give anything. But the church needs it because it takes a lot to keep the building cool in the summertime, warm in winter, have electricity flowing for the lights and music, etc.

The Bible teaches Christians to fellowship with one another and worship in God's House. How could we do that if there were no such thing as churches?

christina>you 820 Posting Sage Featured Poster

That is very strange.

christina>you 820 Posting Sage Featured Poster

Yes, unless they are trying for a baby. And that IS why we have contraceptvies. So people can have sex for fun, some people choose not to use them and get knocked up twice in 6 months....... but that's a completly different story.

and ta AD :) Not my quote though.

I know that's what I meant lol. Actually I was saying not ALL couples have sex primarily for the fun of it, but to have children.

christina>you 820 Posting Sage Featured Poster

This is allowed and happens; I had a class like this.

Really? We don't have classes like that at any of the schools around here.

christina>you 820 Posting Sage Featured Poster

hmm.. I do see your point there. Perhaps a "World Religions" or something class would be a great place to learn about other religions. However, most colleges offer that class anyway..

That's true...

christina>you 820 Posting Sage Featured Poster

I think religion should be allowed in public schools and that's not just because I'm a Christian. I think that learning about different religions helps everyone to better understand the origins and beliefs of each one. I don't think it should be mandatory, but I do think it should be an option. Some teens are just really ignorant about religions/atheism/agnosticism/etc. I've had a few friends that didn't know the difference between being an atheist and agnostic. Not only that, but a lot of people have talked about Hinduism/Buddhism/Islam and mixed up all of their beliefs. They would say stuff like is Islam and Muslim the same thing? Or isn't Hinduism where they bow down towards Mecca? -- I think people are very ignorant when it comes to different beliefs in our world... and religion is a big part of many cultures. You cannot learn about the world's largest cultures without bringing religion into it.

I'm not disagreeing with science, I'm simply saying that genetics obviously has nothing to do with being gay.. but logically speaking, gays probably do not choose to be gay themselves. As I said earlier, some kind of environmental factors or biological mishaps are to blame.

As Salem stated, the gays were previously persecuted... why would anyone choose that? Why would people blatantly choose to be outcasts of society? It is illogical.. and the only explanation is that it is not a mental choice.

I don't know why either... but my friend just recently told me that he no longer believes that it was a choice... and I told him I wouldn't believe him especially because he told me just a few months ago that he thought the "born that way" theory was a lie. His new "boyfriend" is trying to talk him into believing that all gay men were born to be homosexual even though he told me he never felt that way.

christina>you 820 Posting Sage Featured Poster

I did not say, nor mean, that you hate anyone. And I don't think you do. There are, however, a lot of people out in the world who do hate others based on the things I mentioned. Now if you re-read my post with that in mind I think you will probably agree with what I wrote.

I told you that I didn't disagree with you...?

umm... if you haven't noticed... i'm on your side...

Oh... sorry I didn't know.

christina>you 820 Posting Sage Featured Poster

Yes I agee that this thread has probably gone as far as it can. We all have our own thinking on the topic because no one, not even supposedly knowledgable scientests, know why homosexuality happens. And it isn't unique in mankind -- other animals also behave that way. Its none of my business what people do in private as long as its otherwise legal and not physically harmful to someone else. The idea I personally wanted to get across is one of tolerance -- we should not hate someone just because they a different religion, a different color or a different sexual orientation. We are all people and should respect one another for that.

Of course... I don't disagree with you at all.
I don't hate gay people because like I've said before, I have a couple of gay friends who I care about a lot.

christina>you 820 Posting Sage Featured Poster

Wow... where in the world to start?

Homosexuality is by no means genetic.. but so? That doesn't have anything to do with homosexuality as a choice.

How does it not have anything to do with it being a choice?? If it's not genetic, then what is it? If scientists have proven that people are not born that way, then how can it not be a choice?

I must say, Josh... I thought you of all people would agree with me since the primary reason for why you don't believe in God is based on "science." I thought you said that "science is truth." ??

And science determines your beliefs? Thats a good one.

Hmm... don't know where you were going with that but okay. =/

That proves nothing. One person's voice doesn't speak for everyone.

Okay, so it doesn't account for anything? Mind you, he's a hardcore homosexual since middle school. And most of his "boyfriends" will tell me that they were not born to be gay... there are a few exceptions though.

not relevent to the decision to be gay ot straight. And even straight people do not have sex just to have babies. In fact most of the time a baby is just an afterthought or no thought at all. People have sex because its fun, not for other reasons.

How is it irrelevant?
So all married couples have sex primarily on the reason that it's fun? I think not. That's why we …
