if you have a group chat, you have a 'room' in which all your users are chatting. if you want a private chat, create a new 'room' (I assume this will be much like making the public room) in which you limit the users to yourself and the person you want to talk private to.
never tried anything like this, but I think that sums a lot of it up (in big lines).
it might be easier to see something if you actually showed some code.

He's been writing the application since about 3-4 threads, I guess. AFAIK, the chat server is in python and clients in Java =D
