The biggest heroes and villains in IT history have been revealed as the results of a new poll are published. Perhaps rather surprisingly, Steve Jobs is just as hated as Bill Gates and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg is more hated than both of them. But that's just where the shock results from this particular survey start: wait until you see how people voted in the 'greatest computing hero of all time' section. The poll, conducted by IT and Telecoms recruitment specialists Greythorn, asked IT professionals in the United Kingdom who they thought the most unpopular person ever in the history …

I will admit that I didn't stumble upon Steven Levy's classic tale of how the IT west was won, for want of a better phrase, until 1993 when it was republished some 10 years after the original book but with the addition of a handful of new pages to celebrate it's anniversary and note the changes the industry had seen. Fast forward to the present, and to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the book (which was actually first published in 1984, go figure) we have another new edition. Well, I say new addition but it's more the 10th anniversary edition …

The British Government's decision to throw £30 million on getting everybody online is of course laudable in its way. The idea is to save a lot of money - and as the last European country still in recession goodness knows we could do with it - by taking Government services online, and to do that you need to make sure everyone is pretty much digitally enfranchised. So far, so good. Except that when I go to a public library anywhere in the UK - and every town and most villages have one - you know what I see? Computers. Rows …

I am workiing with a client who has just completed a project with a customer who sells pre-paid calling cards on consignment. It was explained to me that the codes for the individual cards are stored in a database in the cloud and that my client had to integrate their solution to communicate with this database. As I am relatively new to cloud computing and this scenario of a database in the cloud sounds really interesting, I was wondering if anyone has a quick non-technical explanation of how a database in the cloud works?

There are not too many times when one gets to connect the former Hollywood action hero and current Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger, with the shrine to geekdom that is the UK Museum of Computing. So when one comes up you really do have to grab it and run. The connection being a famous Schwarzenegger quote. No, not "Gay marriage is something that should be between a man and a woman" or even "It's simple, if it jiggles, it's fat." I was thinking more of that classic Terminator line "I'll be back." It was a little under a year ago …

Without further ado, Apple has added a new build-to-order option to their Mac Pro that allows 2 Quad Xeon processors instead of the previous 1, promised to run at 3 Ghz, and making the Mac Pro the first 8-core Mac. The upgrade doesn't seem like a huge one, as all they're doing is putting 2 processors on the motherboard instead of 1. This will definitely be interesting to see how well this is accepted into the professional world of computing. Previously, many professionals had held back upgrading to the newest Intel-based Mac Pros because much of the core software they …
