I have translated many numerical math programs from FORTRAN into C++ and JavaScript. The original FORTRAN source code listings are posted on the NETLIB site and have been in the public domain for 20, 30, years. The C++ and JavaScript translations that I write are hand-coded, line-by-line, and repeatedly tested and stepped through. The conversion tool f2c is *not* used. Sometimes I get emails from people asking if they can use my program, or the source code, or parts of it in their own work. I do not mind people using my code in their own work; I implicitly assume …

I was just roaming the internet for some interesting reads and I came across [this very interesting paper](http://www.priv.gc.ca/information/research-recherche/2011/forcese_201107_e.asp) about how to define a legal framework for the "reasonable expectation of privacy" when it comes to our new cyber-existence. I thought I'd share it with you guys, and see what you think about agencies being able and allowed to collect and analyse huge amounts of data about any individual they like. The main point of the article is that the conventional wisdom that says that when you roam outside, in public places, you can't expect privacy (i.e., people (incl. authorities) could …

Hello All, I'm organizing a large charity "poker run" where I'll have hundreds of mountain bikers turning in 5 card hands to be ranked for handing out prizes. Instead of sorting them by hand, I need to punch in, for example, "participant 129" and their hand of, say, "KH, 5D, 5D, KH, KS" for a couple of kings of hearts, a couple of fives of diamonds and a king of spades. The trick, as you see, is that I have to rank hands considering the multiple decks. A five of a kind with all kings of hearts ought to be …

Well here goes - another year and a wide open championship. England must start as favourites now that Ireland faltered against Scotland. France will be kicking themselves as they narrowly missed a win at Fortress Twickenham. Wales took Italy apart in the last 20 minutes, but failed to get a bonus point which may prove to be very costly. C'mon Cymru! Who will you be supporting?

Have a look at [this page](https://madeby.google.com/wifi/). <rant> This seems to be the thing lately to take fonts in colours that were easy to read and make them lighter so that they look washed out. It may be prettier to look at, but it is certainly not easy to read. I'm 62 and my eyes don't focus as well as they used to and washing out the fonts is not helping in the least. </rant>

Hello, I created four scripts written in php. Scripts are used to import/export data between two databases (one database is on local machine and second one is on server as web shop). Scripts are not basic import/export, because I had a lot of details on what to do with the data - here is just one example of complication: one database was on one language and second database was on second language. I didn't give any price and I don't know what price should be for this four scripts -- what is their value? I gave this script to my …

This is a question for the Daniweb members from the UK. In North America we have seen a number of Americanized versions of British comedies. "Til Death Do Us Part" became "All in the Family". "Steptoe & Son" became "Sanford & Son", "Man About the House" became (the much inferior) "Three's Company". Here in Canada we also had access to original, unAmericanized British imports. I'd like to know what North American sitcoms (if any) were ever adapted for British television, and what sitcoms aired unmodified? Which ones were the most popular?

*There's lots of ground ("gaps") missing in-between the background. Beware.* There's that point in time where I'd like to get myself a good trusty hosting. Attempt to start any kind of project, get any community moving. Whatever. Long story short: I'm seeking for a good hosting (VPS/Dedicated, Website+SSL) for "rest of my life". One single provider that could provide trusted services for regular price. I'm not asking about what Google says or what website promises, I can find them too: 1and1.com, hostinger.eu, m2host.com, hostgator.com, godaddy.com, westhost.com, dreamhost.com, greengeeks.com, one.com, hostgator.com, fatcow.com (what?), cyon.ch . There's LOTS of websites that say …

In another typical news day we are told that a "Major New Study Reveals Cellphone Radiation Causes Cancer." If, like most people, you react to headlines, your first (perhaps only) thought is "HOLY SHIT!!!". The news story begins with: >The $25 million study, conducted over two and a half years by the U.S. National Toxicology Program, found significantly higher instances of two types of malignant tumors on male rats exposed to the same radio-frequency radiation currently used in the United States. Hmmm. Sounds pretty serious. But track down the sources and you discover that 1. The radiation used in the …

Analog X cookie wall has been useful in the past . Even though powerful programs exist to find tracking cookies, the quick view, and auto delete functions are useful. However when trying to uninstall or reinstall , their ubiquitous "only one instance of program is allowed". The installation is not found in windows or Revo uninstall lists. Any suggestions greatfully accepted. Steven

I scored 19 :) With this test someone can find out if he/she has psychopatic tendensies. Do the Psychopathy Checklist yourself here: Note: between 30 and 40 means you're in high risc of becoming (or already are) a psychopath. However, only a few individuals ever (worldwide) reached the highest score of 40! Also try to be honest .. it's anonymous anyway. - Dr. Hare is a professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia, and has researched psychopathy for more than twenty years. The following is his well-known and implemented psychopathy checklist. - - For each characteristic that is …

Like many people my age and older, I am hearing impaired. Specifically, I have lost hearing in the upper ranges. I find that I can manage reasonably well in face to face conversation, but I have a lot of trouble with recorded video. I use VLC which has a built in equalizer, and Songbird which has the same. However, I cannot use VLC for online videos unless I download them first. I also can't use VLC for Skype. Fortunately I found a free and open source equalizer which can be set to affect **all** audio on my laptop. You have …

How is it that the government that tells us that they need a back door into encryption because the tool that we use to safeguard our privacy can also be used by "bad guys" for evil purposes, completely forgets this argument when it comes to guns? "Yeah, bad guys use guns for bad things but there's nothing we can do." The right to bear arms (interpretation up to debate) and the right to privacy are both supposedly guaranteed in the constitution (amendments 2 and 4).

Hi All, I'm looking for some advice. After having to take about two years off from university due to suffering from viral meningitis, I have finally gone back and finished my undergraduate degree in Information Systems, which is a stream from the applied computer sciences. I am very excited to finally be done, and am eager to get my resume out there with that being a part of my education. However, as for experience, I don't feel I may have gotten a lot from the current position that I've held, over the last two years. I have worked on many …

It's all too easy to think that spam is an old problem, and one that has largely been dealt with. Certainly, many people will tell you that they see very little evidence of spam in their mailboxes. This, however, has less to do with the demise of the spammer and everything to do with the effectiveness of spam filters. The latest Kaspersky Lab analysis of the spam and phishing threat landscape for the first quarter of 2015 suggests that some 59.2 per cent of email traffic was actually spam, which is good news in as far as that number is …

What is easily the greatest thing you’ve seen all week looks like an alternate ending to Terminator 2: Judgment Day, one that didn't leave me in tears and featured Ahhhnold rocking the main stage at Ozzfest, which isn't a far stretch this year with a leather-clad Rob Halford as a supporting act. The stainless steel stand, created by artist Christopher Conte, is a true marvel in every sense, much like the man behind the work. That might be quiet strange question. Would any of you tell me basic teachings about your life? Something as if you would be thinking like "Oh darn, if I just knew 30 years ago to do that, life would've been much easier!", or "Crap, why didn't I do this in my childhood, it would've worked really well!". Could you share some of your teachings maybe? Something like: - Don't put beans up your nose. - Putting your thong to vacuum cleaner is generally a bad idea. - Before you go on date, check your breath. - WATCH OUT!! HE'S A …
