I changed the computer name of my iMac in System Preferences and then logged out, when I logged back in all my files were gone. They're still on the computer, but I can't open any of them. I opened iTunes and all my music was gone, opened iPhoto and all my photos were gone, the files are still on the computer but I can't open them. So I tried changing back the name to what it originally was and still the same outcome. Someone please help so I can get all my files back!

I am having trouble with my PC. The tip of the iceberg is an inocuous message which displays everytime I launch iTunes, as below: "The registry settings used by the iTunes drivers for importing and burning CDs and DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD-burning software. Please re-install iTunes." I have uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes twice now but to no avail. I suspect the problem relates, as it indicates, to other software that I have used. I have previously installed and used Handbrake, DVDVideoSoft Free studio, and no doubt others that I can no …

I know that Apple has been expending a lot of hot air telling anyone who will listen that the new iTunes pricing regime is a good thing for consumers. I know that it reckons that for every song which is ramped up to the new 99p (here in the UK) price it will drop another 10 songs down to the 59p bottom dollar pricing. Trouble is, I also know that music download market runner-up Amazon has taken advantage of consumer confusion surrounding the price changes by jumping in with 100+ songs going for just 29p a pop. Importantly, Amazon has …

From last week, when I wanted to access and download "Flipboard" from the app store via my iPod touch G4, suddenly the above error message appeared again and again. After that even other apps could not be viewed in the app store. After a few minutes apps others than "Flipboard" went on to normal and be available again. Anyone else the same experience? How could I solve then? Thanks here Chesy

So here's the thing, it is now some 10 years since the first iPod was launched and the way we listen to music changed forever. One of the things that changed, if you are anything like me, is that your iTunes database became the centre of your musical life. Unfortunately, across those 10 years that database can get kind of dirty. A quick look at my iTunes database reveals a whole bunch of tracks with no album artwork, which is no big deal I grant you, but also a whole bunch of songs with spelling mistakes or where the import …

Hello, recently I had a bit of bother with a software with practically destroyed my registry. After resetting my registry to zero (using the repair files) I started reinstalling my software. Owning an iPhone I am obliged to install iTunes (as I don't want to jailbreak my phone). Using the latest version (10.5) I installed iTunes which worked fine but it was unable to recognize my iPhone. Thinking it to be an unproper installation process, I did unstall iTunes using Advanced Uninstaller Free and tried to reinstall iTunes after that. It didn't work. All I got was a very generic …

Kid Rock, The Beatles, AC/DC and Garth Brooks would make for a bizarre and unlikely concert line up, yet they share something in common: they are the last men standing as far as making their music available on iTunes. In the case of Kid Rock, he is apparently refusing to put those albums over which he has control onto iTunes as a matter of principle. According to the BBC the Rock 'n' Roll Jesus, real name Robert Ritchie, is holding firm simply because performers are not getting paid their fair dues for material downloaded from the market leading Apple music …

Music sharing with Facebook friends just became easier, and if that isn't enough to distract you, how about a game of Internet pinball? All the news and social media feeds seem to have overdosed on one story this week: will The Beatles be on iTunes after the big Apple 'Rock and Roll' event today? News at eleven: I don't give a stuff, and here's my top ten reasons why.

Most people would rather have an iPod with a camera than an iPod with The Beatles.
Reality check: the only people who are really getting their knickers in a knot over the possibility of Beatles music on iTunes, unfortunately, would be we the media. Ok, so, I have a Dell Studio 1537 laptop, and yesterday upgraded my ram to 4GB and also upgraded my 32bit Vista to 64bit Win7. I made backup DVD discs of my whole iTunes library, but when I tried to reload them on to iTunes all of a sudden my CD/DVD won't recognise that there is a disk there when I put them in. I have been having problems like this with the drive for some time, and I know the disks are ok as they show up fine on my Mum's laptop. So, it seems to me I have …

Use a Titanium G 4 867 with OSX 10.5.8 Leopard. After upgrading to Leopard operating system from Tiger I began having issues with my ITunes hanging up on me. I don't know if this was a coincidence that this started shortly after installing Leopard or not. This problem arises when I'm using Youtube as well. There will be times where the sound performs without a problem then suddenly starts having issues and begins to hang or cut in and out. Use headphones a lot and when this starts happening if I take the headphones out of jack it tends to …

Nobody should have any reason to wish the fledgeling HMVDigital music store, launching today, anything but the best of luck (unless you're an Apple shareholder). A bad business is in nobody's interests and a competitor to an obvious leader is a good thing. On the surface many of the omens are good. HMV has a solid track record as a music company, which Apple certainly lacked. The download market is growing healthily but the continuing dominance of the CD format suggests there's a lot of organic growth to come before competitors have to start poaching each other's market shares. A …

I want the user to be able to enter X seconds to ff or go back, but since its a COM and it doesn't provide this function (I think its meant for WPF or WF where you just hold the button as long as you want to ff or go back), is there anyway I can implement this myself. Last week was a tough week for Apple followers as we were bombarded with a slew of stories that sounded dire, but upon further examination maybe weren’t so bad (or maybe they were). Confused yet? You’re not alone. Let’s look at three stories from last week that illustrate this issue. The iPhone 4 Antenna Issue I wrote about this issue on Friday in Apple iPhone 4 Explanation Letter Borders on Surreal. We had Apple’s convoluted letter of explanation that it was an issue, but not really. The news - or rather unsubstantiated reports - that Apple is developing an online, cloud version of iTunes can be no surprise to anyone. The surprise, in the light of Spotify, Sky Songs and other competitors is that Apple hasn't made a move before. You could actually argue that the company has been slow on the uptake this time. Uncharacteristically, Apple has failed in a big way to update its store more or less since it started. Yes of course it now has videos and movies which it's only had for a couple of years, and by all means the …

Two years ago Apple introduced MobileMe. At the time I wrote a post called Apple Has No Business Charging for Mobile Me. My point was that people didn't want to pay $100 for a cloud service, that by all rights they should be getting for free. Folks pay a premium for Apple, and throwing in a service like MobileMe would have been a nice touch. As I wrote at the time complaining about the price of MobileMe: "Apple should know its biggest asset is its customers' loyalty. It should be rewarding that loyalty, not trying to gouge a few more …

InMethod has come out with a utility that if properly handled, could be the future of personal media. Right now, there are still some things they could do better, but their current iPhone/iPad apps allow you to play any number of media formats on a device that would otherwise be limited to a very specific few. On top of that, it allows you to stream files from a centralized location, such as a media center PC, on to your mobile device. Validation In testing this software, we deployed the OS X, Windows 7 and Linux (which is still in …

It has been a long time coming, but Apple has finally announced that iTunes is going DRM-free. As in, all songs on the iTunes site will ditch DRM. That's everything from Universal Music Group, Sony BMG, Warner Music Group and EMI along with thousands of indie labels. All with their musical offerings now available in the iTunes Plus DRM-free format. According to Apple the iTunes Store will begin offering eight million songs in the DRM-free format immediately, with the remaining two million songs offered in iTunes Plus by the end of March. But at what cost? Apple might have ditched …

Two numbers that Apple fans won't forget in a hurry have made the headlines this week: 10 billion and 40 billion. The first refers to the 10 billion songs that have now been downloaded from the iTunes Store. The 10 billionth song was the eerily appropriate "Guess Things Happen That Way" by the oh so aptly named Johnny Cash. And cash is waiting for the downloader of that 10 billionth track in the form of a $10,000 iTunes gift card courtesy of Apple. "We’re grateful to all of our customers for helping us reach this amazing milestone" Eddy Cue, Apple’s …

I came across an interesting post today by the Kansas City Star's Eric Adler suggesting that technology is robbing us of serendipity, those playful moments of spontaneous discovery. For example, he wonders when the last time a young person went into a library or book store and just found a book on the shelves. Are search engines and the web robbing us of this experience? In my view, while technology is altering the way we experience the world, it isn't necessarily completely removing serendipity from the equation.
