IEEEE 1284 is a parallel interface, but IEEE 1394 is a serial firewire bus. There are two kinds of fire wire, firewire 1 and firewire 2. Firewire 2 is much faster. Firewire 2 cards can do firewire 1, but firewire 1 cards can not do firewire 2.
