I was going to make it top one but I couldn't narrow it down to just one. My two all time favourite sidekicks on TV are:

  1. Al (Dean Stockwell) from Quantum Leap
  2. Sam Axe (Bruce Campbell) from Burn Notice.

I've never heard of Burn Notice and so don't know who Sam Axe is.

Al is up there, sure, but for me it has to be Agent 99 from Get Smart.

And for those of you who are not familiar with Get Smart, then take Inspector Gadget, make it live action instead of a cartoon, rename M.A.D. to Kaos, replace a niece named Penny with a love interest named Agent 99, and keep the same bumbling lead actor with the same jokes.

Oh, I forgot. There was a Get Smart movie a bunch of years back where Anne Hathaway played Agent 99. Wasn't exactly true to the original TV series, but eh.

I can't believe you've never heard of Burn Notice. Michael Westen is a CIA agent who gets burned (disavowed) and returns to Miami. Sam Axe is a buddy and former navy seal. Sam is the guy who always knows a guy. They are joined by Fiona who he fell in love with undercover while infiltrating the IRA. The continuing arc is Michael trying to find out who burned him so he can get back in. In order to make ends meet he, Sam, and Fiona take on contracts as problem solvers. And throw his mother (Sharon Gless from Cagney and Lacey) into the mix. It has lots of action and a fair bit of humor. I recommend it. Michael narrates, explaining spycraft along the way.

Oh, there’s also Watson in the tv series Elementary. Barbara Feldon’s 99 still has to be my fave.

Then there's Job (not your typical sidekick) in the series, Banshee. If you haven't seen Banshee I'd recommend you have a look. It stars the guy who plays Homelander in The Boys, except he's likeable in Banshee.

I completely forgot about this series, but yes, Watson from Elementary is definitely high on my list. The very first is Daryl Dixon (The Walking Dead). Now that I think about it, it happened many times that I liked the sidekick better than the main character.

- I had totally forgotten all the Watsons over the years. They ran the gamut from bumbling (early TV adaptations) to highly competent (Lucy Liu and Martin Freeman). The modern Sherlock (with Martin Freeman) proved you don't need a bumbling sidekick for comic relief.

I'd select Bruce Lee as Kato in The Green Hornet.

My second would be Lurch in the original Addams Family... "You rang?"
