I haven't asked a stupid question in a while (don't disillusion me if I am wrong), but why do I not see line numbers when I post code in a thread using the "Code" tool in the edit window?

The same reason I asked the same question awhile back, you have to hit the Refresh button on your browser. Its a javascript quirk.
