Why is sufficient clean water difficult in other tropical islands if this technique is truly a simple inexpensive and adequate solution? I suspect that the answer is in two parts:

  1. I think this technique provides only an insufficient amount of water for the effort and cost. (How often do you need to clean left over stuff out of the 'dirty side'?) That may be acceptable when the full cost of clean water from other avenues is even higher, as it now is in Haiti
  2. I think there's a chance that if the input water is contaminated with microorganisms, some of them might make it into the collection trough, particularly under field conditions. Of course, sea water might work better, until the precipitate clogs the system.
