I have recently had a virus which was detected by Norton as Backdoor.Trojan. I have run antivirus on my computer and all my external drives. However I am still unable to run regedit or cmd.exe ( but am able to use command.com) and when a flash drive is connected the virus jumps onto it (attaching to the autorun.inf file)

here is my hijack this log

— the symptoms reported (regedit/cmd blocked, then usable after renaming, plus autorun.inf appearing on USB sticks) match a common pattern: a backdoor/worm that modifies Windows policies or file associations to disable remediation tools and uses Autorun to spread. Malware frequently sets the DisableRegistryTools/DisableCMD policy keys or drops fake handlers so standard tools are blocked; those modifications are widely documented and treated as PUMs by on‑demand scanners. (malwarebytes.com)

Immediate containment (do this first on an infected system):

  • Disconnect the machine from any network and remove or keep all removable media unplugged; do not insert those USB sticks into other PCs.
  • Create rescue media (ISO on a clean PC) and scan the infected disk offline rather than trying more repairs while the backdoor may be active.
  • If this is a corporate/work machine, escalate to IT/incident response before proceeding. (cisa.gov)

Suggested cleanup workflow (ordered, safer than live cleanup):

  1. Boot from a reputable rescue environment and update signatures, then run a full scan.
  2. If booting Windows is required, run RKill to stop visible malicious processes, then run on‑demand scanners (Malwarebytes, vendor removal tools / KVRT) before rebooting. Use Autoruns (Sysinternals) to find and remove persistence entries after verifying what each entry is.
  3. Clean infected USB sticks from the rescue environment (do not trust a simple copy). If data is important, copy documents to a clean machine after scanning; otherwise reformat the sticks.
Safe command examples that are useful from an elevated prompt or rescue shell:
attrib -h -s -r X:\autorun.inf
del /f /q X:\autorun.inf
attrib -h -s -r X:\*.lnk
del /f /q X:\*.lnk

reg delete "HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System" /v DisableRegistryTools /f
reg add "HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\System" /v DisableCMD /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Run registry changes only after backing up the registry and when confident the system is no longer actively controlled. Tools referenced here: RKill, Malwarebytes, Autoruns and rescue ISOs from reputable vendors. (bleepingcomputer.com)

Final note: a true backdoor can leave hidden persistence and stolen credentials; if the machine holds sensitive data or if access is suspected, the most reliable recovery is a full wipe and reinstall from known‑good media, followed by changing all passwords from a clean device. To reduce future spread, disable Autorun/AutoPlay system‑wide (NoDriveTypeAutoRun / Group Policy) after applying the appropriate Microsoft updates or guidance. (learn.microsoft.com)

update:

I changed the extention of regedit and cmd to .com and now they can open.
