hey, so I've been doing TONS of web searching and I've found that hundreds of people have been suffering from the same virus/worm that I seem to have. The one that places thousands of pos*tmp files in documents and settings (over 6,000 in mine) and places a fat red X where it says C drive under my computer. I 've updated AVG, Spybot S&D, and CCleaner and have run all of those countless times but none of them have fixed the problem. I did find some tips online from other people with the same problem and have managed to get rid of the red X over my C drive and I deleted around 1,000 of the pos*tmp files that I saw were sitting there, but I know that there are more hidding in my computer. When I had gone to the start menu and did did a search on my c and d drives for "pos*tmp" it found 6,000 items and i couldnt delete many of them. I accidentaly closed that window out and now when I do the same seach I find nothing so I know I didn't delete them all. My computer has also been laggy and I noticed under task manager processes that there was a fake internet explorer process running taking up like 98% of my cpu so i ended that and so far it hasn't come back, is that another virus? And right now my computer still has little lags here and there especially if I am gaming. It'll run smooth and then lag for a sec, then smooth for a bit, then lag for a sec, but under my processes again, theres nothing taking up any more cpu speed. And none of this was happening about a week ago, back then everything was smooth. Can anyone help me? I'm guessing I'll have to do the whole hijack thing too. Thanks!

Download
SDFix
and save it to your desktop.

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the
following :

  • Restart your computer
  • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the
    Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  • Instead of Windows loading as normal, a menu with options should appear;
  • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press "Enter".
  • Choose your usual account.
  • In Safe Mode, right click the SDFix.zip folder and choose Extract
    All
    ,
  • Open the extracted folder and double click RunThis.bat to
    start the script.
  • Type Y to begin the script.
  • It will remove the Trojan Services then make some repairs to the
    registry and prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  • Your system will take longer that normal to restart as the fixtool
    will be running and removing files.
  • When the desktop loads the Fixtool will complete the removal and
    display Finished, then press any key to end the script and load
    your desktop icons.
  • Finally open the SDFix folder on your desktop and copy and paste the
    contents of the results file Report.txt back onto the forum.

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

Allright Crunchie, so I did everything you said to do in your last post and I did end up deleting ALCXMNTR.EXE after running a search for it. My computer seems to be running a bit faster; especially the internet. But I just tried running an online game (Battlefield 2142) to see if it was any smoother but the same thing happened as before. I started the program and just in the opening credits and labels, the program lagged, it ran smooth then lag then smooth then lag, and again, this didnt happen 2 or 3 weeks ago. When I tried to play the game the same thing happened during the game, it lagged then smooth then lagged then smooth. My System is: Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 2, and is supported by: Hewlett-Packard, Pavilion, and has an AMD Athlon(tm)XP 2800+, 2.08 GHz, and 2.00 GB of RAM, and has an NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GS. OK so here's my new HJT log:

I'm not seeing anything in your log now. Do yuo have the latest drivers for your vid card?

=============

Let's try an online scan to see what may still be there.

Please use the Internet Explorer browser (or FireFox with IETab), and do an online scan with Kaspersky Online Scanner

Note: If you have used this particular scanner before, you MAY HAVE TO UNINSTALL the program through Add/Remove Programs before downloading the new ActiveX component

Click Yes, when prompted to install its ActiveX component.
(Note.. for Internet Explorer 7 users: If at any time you have trouble with the "Accept" button of the license, click on the "Zoom" tool located at the bottom right of the IE window and set the zoom to 75 %. Once the license has been accepted, reset to 100%.)
The program launches and downloads the latest definition files.Once the files are downloaded click on Next
Click on Scan Settings and configure as follows: Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:Extended

Scan Options:Scan Archives
Scan Mail Bases

Click OK and, under select a target to scan, select My Computer
When the scan is done, in the Scan is completed window (below), any infection is displayed.
There is no option to clean/disinfect, however, we need to analyze the information on the report.

To obtain the report:
Click on:Save Report As (above - red blinking arrow)
Next, in the Save as prompt, Save in area, select: Desktop
In the File name area, use KScan, or something similar
In Save as type, click the drop arrow and select: Text file [*.txt]
Then, click: Save
Please post the Kaspersky Online Scanner Report in your reply.

Hey Crunchie As for these:
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\PerfomanceOptimizerPre_Installer.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\PerformanceoptimizerFreeSetup[1].exe
I have no clue what they are or what they do. I don't remember downloading or installing any performance optimizer things. Maybe they are part of the NVIDIA drivers I installed? Thats my only real guess.

Go to your Program Files folder and delete the following folder; s?stem

==

Delete both of these entries;

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\PerfomanceOptimizerPre_Installer.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\PerformanceoptimizerFreeSetup[1].exe

==

Reboot when done and post another hijackthis log please. Let me know how the pc is.

Hey Crunchie, ok so I deleted S?stem, when I looked it up it just turned out to be an empty folder, and I tried searching for these:

C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\PerfomanceOptimizerPre_Installer.exe
C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\PerformanceoptimizerFreeSetup[1].exe

but they aren't in the Downloaded Program Files folder. And I did a Start>Search for them but that came up with nothing too. I don't know where they went. What I did do, though was use the roll back option on my geforce 7800 gs drivers to the last driver, and when I tried the games, they're all working pretty well, just a few odd lags like during loading screens and during the opening credits, but gameplay has been running smoothly. I guess my problems fixed? Is there anything else I need to do?

Nothing else that I can think of. Mark this thread as solved if you wish :).
