I have a toshiba satellite s 269 thats running XP its about 2 1/2 years old. Tonight while surfing the internet the computer just completely froze. I restarted it and after about 5 mins the computer just simply shut off. I kept trying to restart the computer but it would shut off within 3 seconds of the power button lighting up. This continued to happen about another 10 times.

Then finally it started I ran several spyware programs as well as vundo fix and everything checked out ok. Then the computer again froze. I have been trying to reboot the computer ever since and it will start at times and then within 3 mins or so it will freeze again. My wife did say there was a microsoft update that was automatically performed yesterday. Any help will be appreciated.

When you have a problem like this, just use one of the good Linux Live CD like Fedora Core 7 Live, or Knoppix 5.11 or PC Linux OS (all available for free on the net, get it downloaded from a friend or another PC (its free !)
If it load OK that check your hardware is still working.
If it OK then either keep working with Linux or Low-Level format the disk before re-installing windows.

I suggest you use the winxp cd and go into the repair conslo and run "chkdsk /r" with out the quotes .

Note: If normal (high level) hard disk formatting is required, you can use DOS FDISK command to first erase and create partitions and then use FORMAT. It is also a good idea when you hard disk becomes inaccessible to see if it is just the system files that are corrupted. Most of the time, it is the case. SYS will do the job of replacing system files. Therefore, low level format is always of LAST RESORT when you encounter HDD problems.
