I recently had a computer made for me and my family. It was running perfectly for the first few weeks, but then it began to slow down. I know have numerous pop ups and the computer is slowing down. My guess is that my children must have downloaded files with viruses. I downloaded hijackthis and was proceeding to scan and save a log, but during the scan it says that there is a program error and closes. it does this on every attempt. Can someone please help me?

Run the following first, then see if you can run hijackthis. If not, download this version; http://www.merijn.org/files/hijackthis1982.zip

1. Download and install Ad-Aware SE, keeping the default options. However, some of the settings will need to be changed before your first scan

2.Close ALL windows except Ad-Aware SE

3. Click on the‘world’ icon at the top right of the Ad-Aware SE window and let AdAware SE update the reference list for the adware and malware.

4. Once the update is finished click on the ‘Gear’ icon (second from the left at the top of the window) to access the preferences/settings window

1) In the ‘General’ window make sure the following are selected in green:
*Automatically save log-file
*Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal
*Safe Mode (always request confirmation)

Under Definitions:
*Prompt to udate outdated definitions - set the number of days

2) Click on the ‘Scanning’ button on the left and select in green :

Under Driver, Folders & Files:
*Scan Within Archives

Under Select drives & folders to scan -
*choose all hard drives

Under Memory & Registry: all green
*Scan Active Processes
*Scan Registry
*Deep Scan Registry
*Scan my IE favorites for banned URL’s
*Scan my Hosts file

3) Click on the ‘Advanced’ button on the left and select in green:

Under Shell Integration:
*Move deleted files to recycle bin

Under Logfile Detail Level: (all green)
*include addtional object information
*DESELECT - include negligible objects information
*include environment information

Under Alternate Data Streams:
*Don't log streams smaller than 0 bytes
*Don't log ADS with the following names: CA_INOCULATEIT

4) Click the ‘Tweak’ button and select in green:

Under the ‘Scanning Engine’:
*Unload recognized processes during scanning
*Scan registry for all users instead of current user only

Under the ‘Cleaning Engine’:
*Let Windows remove files in use at next reboot

Under the Log Files:
*Include basic Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Include additional Ad-aware SE settings in logfile
*Please do not check or make green: Include Module list in logfile

5. Click on ‘Proceed’ to save the settings.

6. Click ‘Start’

*Choose:'Perform Full System Scan'
*DESELECT "Search for negligible risk entries", as negligible risk entries (MRU's) are not considered to be a threat.

7. Click ‘Next’ and Ad-Aware SE will scan your hard drive(s) with the options you have selected and clean automatically.

8. If Ad-Aware SE finds bad entries, you will receive a list of what it found in the window

9. Save the log file when it asks and then click ‘finish’

10. REBOOT to complete the removal of what Ad-Aware SE found

Download & instal Spybot S&D 1.3 from here. Update it before scanning.
After the scan is complete, have spybot fix everything marked RED.
On the page that first opens when you start Spybot there is an option to immunise, you should do this. In the immunise section there is also a link to download Spywareblaster. This program will prevent the install of bad activex controls that it has knowledge of. Download that & you can keep it updated by selecting the same link that you use to download it. Reboot

i did everything you said and hijack this worked. Thank you.

Please go here for Wintools removal instructions.

Run Hijackthis and go to the process viewer by going to Config, Misc Tools, Process Viewer, to unload all instances of the following running processes;
xmlpc.exe
apwin.exe
gxidffta.exe
Ufbcpn.exe

Go to C:\WINNT and delete the xmlpc.exe file and the apwin.exe file. Go to C:\WINNT\system32 and delete the gxidffta.exe and Ufbcpn.exe files.

Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows, and hit the "Fix checked" button.

Download, install and keep updated, Spywareblaster from www.javacoolsoftware.com to help keep your system clean.

This may take a couple of attempts to fix, so do not worry :).

Please post another hijackthis log.

I recently had a computer made for me and my family. It was running perfectly for the first few weeks, but then it began to slow down. I know have numerous pop ups and the computer is slowing down. My guess is that my children must have downloaded files with viruses.

As I was reading your post it reminded me of this thread so I thought I would post the link for you to read if you like (and to hopefully prevent this from happening again):

2. Reboot into safe mode (you get to the safe mode boot option by hitting the F8 key as your computer is starting up)

- Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files".

- Find and delete the following folders entirely:
C:\PROGRAM FILES\YOURSITEBAR
C:\Program Files\ISTsvc
c:\program files\180solutions
C:\Program Files\BullsEye Network
C:\Program Files\SideFind

- Find and delete the following files:
C:\WINNT\system32\msbe.dll
C:\WINNT\system32\gxidffta.exe
C:\WINNT\extgemun.exe
C:\WINNT\hyl.exe
C:\WINNT\system32\SahAgent.exe
C:\WINNT\Web\xmlbak.exe
C:\WINNT\zeta.exe

- For every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders:

1. Local Settings\Temp
2. Cookies
3. History
4. Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.

Note- If you get any messages concerning the deletion of system files such as desktop.ini or index.dat, just choose to delete those files; they'll be automatically regenerated by Windows if needed. Windows will allow you to delete the versions of those files which exist in sub-folders within the main Temp/Temorary folders, but might not let you delete the versions of those files that exist in the main Temp folders themselves; this is normal and OK.

- Empty your Recycle Bin.

3. Reboot normally, run HJT again, and post a fresh log.

With spywareblaster, all you need do is install it and then have it protect against all checked items, (basically everything in it's database). Check for updates on a weekly basis and download if the are any, then enable all protection. Hit the *X* and close the program. It does not need to be running to help protect your system.
