Hoping someone can help me rid IE of a nasty little hijack.

I have taken the liberty of posting a Hijackthis log, to see if anyone out there can advise?

Please let me know what you think, so I can return to normal, happy computing!

Apologies in advance for the long log...

First up, I cannot see where hijackthis is running from. This is important, so please let me know. It should show in the log.
Second. Unless you get service pack 4 for W2K and install IE6 with service pack 1, you stand an excellent chance of being instantly reinfected.

Please go here & install ALL critical updates required for your system, including service pack 4 for W2K and SP1 for IE6.
Most malware is designed to attack unpatched systems - exploiting the available 'holes' - and can bypass third-party protection on an unpatched system. The most that can be done with an unpatched system is put a temporary bandage on it. your system can potentially be reinfected within minutes of cleaning it.

Please post another log when done.

thanks for your reply chrunchie

Guilty as charged on the miserable record of updating IE and Windows

I'll get back to you with a new log, it may not be until early next week, particularly busy with other things at the moment.

Once again, thanks for your reply and I hope you can continue your support,

nich

Once you get thos fixed go ahead and download the ms Antispyware. seems to be pretty good so far. Might even be compatable with windows.

Amazing how you can make the time when you really need to.

Have installed all updates as requested. Symantec seems to have cheered up, recognising alot more.

Heres the new log - lots going on:

go to hkey_local_machine/software/microsoft/windows/currentVersion rename
run to -run
runonce to -runonce
runservices to -runservices

goto C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup and remove all entries or rename the startup folder
do the same with
C:\Documents and Settings\Default User\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
and C:\Documents and Settings\%YOUR NAME%\Start Menu\Programs\Startup

reboot and repost the log.

You have some entries there that need removing.

===============

We'll need to unload (not uninstall) Intermute's SpySubtract, since it might interfere with other program(s) we might be using to 'clean' off your system.

===============

Download, then unzip to "C:\HJT", the newest version of HiJackThis; version 1.99.1. Then repost your log, either now, or after following the steps in the solution (if provided in this post). This version has features that might be more helpful in 'cleaning' up your system.

===============

Download CWShredder 2.14 from here. Run it and press the *fix,* not scan and allow it to clean the infection. Close all browser and explorer windows before hitting the fix button.

-

Download, unzip to your desktop About:Buster and run it, then:

1. Click "Update".
2. Click "Check For Update"

(If no new version is available, skip to step #4.)

3. Click "Download Update", and wait for it to be installed.

Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here

4. Run "About:Buster" again and hit the 'Begin Removal' button.

(Wait for the initial ADS scan to complete.)

5. Click "Yes", to shutdown any IE session currently open.

(Wait for the about:blank scan to complete.)

6. Click "Ok", to scan once more.
7. Click "Yes", to shutdown any IE sessions currently open.
8. Click "Yes", to begin the second pass.

9. Click "Save log", and post this log back along with your new log.
10. Click "Exit".
11. Click "Exit".
12. "Reboot"..

===============

Run HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

===============

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot S&D.
Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Clear your Temp folders.
Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.

Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

If you have any more problems, post back.
