Aurora help needed

I definitely have the dreaded aurora virus/disease in my computer. From reading this board I know I nned to download hijackthis program. Is there any special way to do this? I then post the log right? I am not very experienced in fixing problems related to computers. I appreciate the assistance

You're right- running HijackThis (and then posting the log it generates) is the first step; here are instructions which should help:

Download the (free) HijackThis utility:

http://www.stevewolfonline.com/Downloads/DMR/Spyware%20Tools/HJT/HijackThis.exe

Once downloaded, follow these instructions to install and run the program:

Make a new folder outside of any Temp/Temporary folders for HJT and move it there now. A folder such as C:\HijackThis or C:\Spyware Tools\HijackThis will do.

Run HijackThis, but do not have HJT fix anything yet; only have it scan your system! Once the scan is complete, the "Scan" button will turn into an option to "Save log...". Save the log in the folder you created for HiajckThis, open the log in Windows Notepad, and cut-n-paste the entire contents of the log here.

The log contents will tell us a lot about what "nasties" have crept into your system, and once we analyse the log we can tell you what to do from there.

If you have an hijackthis.exe icon on your desktop, do this:

Right-click in an empty area of your desktop and select New, Folder; give the folder a name (something like HJT or HijackThis). Then, drag the hijackthis.exe icon into this folder.

Close any open browser windows, open HijackThis, and click on 'Scan and Save Log'

Copy the log and paste it here in this thread.

You will need to disconnect from the internet so you may wish to print these instructions.

Download Ewido Security Suite from here:

Install it, and while installing, under Additional Options, uncheck Install background guard and Install scan via context menu.

From the main Ewido screen, click on Update in the left menu, and then click the Start update button. After the update finishes (the status bar at the bottom will display Update successful), close the program (don't scan yet).

Download Nailfix from here:

Unzip it to your desktop, but do not run it yet.

Disconnect from the net and reboot into Safe Mode.

Double-click on the Nailfix.cmd that is on your desktop. Your desktop and icons will disappear and reappear, and a window should open and close very quickly -- this is normal.

Then run a full system scan with Ewido (note: you will be posting the log from this scan when back in normal mode).

Reboot normally.

Scan with hijackthis and have it fix the following entries:

Be sure to close any open windows, other then hijackthis, before hitting Fix checked.

Go to the following locations and delete the highlighted files:

C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe

Empty your Recycle Bin and reboot normally.

Close any open browser windows, scan with hijackthis, and post a new log along with the log from the Ewido scan.

For every User listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders (not the folders themselves):

Local Settings\Temp
Cookies
History
Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

Delete the entire contents of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.

Delete the entire contents of your C:\Temp folder (if you have one).

Do a search for *.tmp and delete all entries found.

Go to Start, Run, and type in cleanmgr, and then click OK. Select the drive XP is on, and check the boxes for Downloaded Program Files (move any files you wish to keep out of this folder first), Temporary Internet Files, Recycle Bin, Temporary Files, Temporary Offline Files, Offline Files, (and Compress old files & Catalog files for the Content Indexer if you wish), and then click OK. Click Yes to confirm you want these files deleted. It may take awhile for this to run, please be patient.

Note: if any of these temporary files cannot be deleted while in normal mode, try Safe Mode.

Open Firefox, go to Tools, Options, and click on Privacy (padlock icon on the left); click on the Clear All button.

Download, install, update, and run PurityScan uninstaller -- http://www.purityscan.com/uninstall.html

Scan with HJT and have it fix this entry:

Reboot into Safe Mode and delete these files:

C:\windows\system32\hpklvh.exe
C:\WINDOWS\njopaiqeo.exe

Empty your Recycle Bin, and do another scan with Ewido.

Reboot normally, scan with HJT, and post a new log along with the Ewido log.

Ok...I know this is a stupid question but....

I downloaded the HJT. It is now on my desktop. I have not made a folder for it yet do I need to and if so can I place thisnew folder on the desktop???

I tried the purity scan. The scan worked but it would not get rid of any of the iitems it listed. Also could not find C:/windows/system32/hpklvh.exe.

The ewido scan allowed me to get rid of infected files so I did. I used the comprehensive scan.

I am not allowing any access to the internet except for this. I don't know if that matters or not.

I also get a AVG virus detected threat.

This is exactly what comes up. AVG will not do anything to it. Delete,move to vault,heal....nothing. Is it being blocked or am I being reinfected????

I am trying to follow your iinstructions the best I can.

Please understand that the instructions we give should be followed exactly, completely, and fully in order to entirely kill the infections. If you only complete part of the removal processes, or perform them in an order other that specifiied, some components of the infections will remain on your system and may enable the infections to "resurrect" themselves.

Please do the following:

1. In addition to ewido, download and install the following utilities. Use each program's online update function before running them to make sure you have the most current updates installed:

Microsoft Anti-Spyware beta - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&displaylang=en
Ad Aware SE Personal - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
SpyBot Search & Destroy - http://www.safer-networking.org/

Run a full scan with each utility (the order doesn't matter). After each utility completes its fixes, reboot before continuing on to the next utility; have the utilities fix all of the problematic/malicious items they find. If you find that the utilities can't fix something, try running them in Safe Mode instead.

2. Boot into Safe Mode again and repeat the ewido/NailFix procedure dlh6213 described ealier, but do not reboot; stay in Safe Mode.

3. Run HijackThis again and have it fix the following entries. (The names of the "04" entries may have "morphed"; these infections can do that in order to make them harder to find and delete. ):

Congratulations; that's a clean log! :)

I wouldn't worry about the items that you couldn't find. They should have been fixed in the course of the cleaning proceedures, but I was just having you double-check to be sure.

Now that your log is clean, you might want to do the following to tidy up any loose ends:

Reboot into safe mode (you get to the safe mode boot option by hitting the F8 key as your computer is starting up)

- Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extentions for known file types".

- For every user account listed under C:\Documents and Settings, delete the entire contents of these folders (but not the folders themselves):

Important: One of the normal steps in eliminating malicious programs is to entirely delete the contents of all Temp folders. Given that, if any data that you care about is living in those Temp folders, you need to move it to a safe location now, or it will be erased along with everything else!

1. Cookies
2. Local Settings\Temp
3. Local Settings\History
4. Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Temp folder.

- Delete the entire content of your C:\Windows\Prefetch folder.

Note- If you get any messages concerning the deletion of system files such as desktop.ini or index.dat, just choose to delete those files; they'll be automatically regenerated by Windows if needed. Windows will allow you to delete the versions of those files which exist in sub-folders within the main Temp/Temorary folders, but might not let you delete the versions of those files that exist in the main Temp folders themselves; this is normal and OK.

- Empty your Recycle Bin.

- Reboot normally.

Windows will allow you to delete the versions of those files which exist in sub-folders within the main Temp/Temorary folders, but might not let you delete the versions of those files that exist in the main Temp folders themselves; this is normal and OK.

- Empty your Recycle Bin.

- Reboot normally.

In addition to what DMR suggested, Open Firefox, go to Tools, Options, and click on Privacy, and click the Clear All button.
