Hi, sorry that i posted my problem in another thread :o , but i thought as long as its the same problem, may be i will benfit from same reply. sorry again.

I have a PIII with windows XP. i got infected with the hacktool virus 3 days ago. i have norton antivirus 2003. it did nothing, can't remove virus only quarantine. then it returned back (virus) and norton even failed to quarantine it. then i downloaded avg antivirus, it found many infections norton didn't say anything about them, about 11 but in final report it only removed 10. i rebooted and ran norton and avg again and all was clean. then the second day i downloaded spybot S& D and adware and they removed a lot of things but after i was connected to the net again. i discovered that the virus returned . its in the file windows\system32\msdirectx.sys. i ran avg again and again removed 10 infected files of 11, so i know the virus is still there somewhere. i downloaded hijack this now and i am going to try it. sorry to bother u but any help will be appreciated

No bother at all :). Post your log when you are ready, but please make certain that it is in a permanent folder first.

oops. You have it in a temporary folder :(.

and what does that mean, can't i remove it from there?

You can but we do not like to do it from there. If something is accidentally removed, all backups can be lost when hijackthis is running from a temp folder. Generally we get you to flush out all the temp folders as part of the clean up :).
It's a one minute job to move it, so it shouldn't be a problem??

ok, let's try it. but i have no idea how to do what u r saying :o :)
but i should say that i already deleted all files in the window's temp folder
is that bad or good :?:

Create a new folder on your desktop by righ clicking on it and selecting NEW>FOLDER and name it hijackthis. Go to where you presently have hijackthis and drag it into the new folder by clicking on it and holding the mouse button until you have it in the folder.
There is also a thread at the top of this forum with a link to a self-extracting version of hijackthis.

ok, i have done that. then what? i disabled system restore. should i run it now from new folder or there is another step to b4 that

Any reason why you disabled system restore? I would turn it back on first as if a mistake is made, (ie; a legitimate file is deleted) system restore is the easiest road to travel :).

If you can rescan with hijackthis from your new folder and post the log, that would be great :).

i read once that i should do that b4 scanning to avoid returning of virus from old restore points :o , was that right or was i misinformed :eek:
anyway i'll return it back to normal and send logfile

There are mixed schools of thought on system restore about when to disable it. It is true that Anti-Virus programs cannot clean files in the restore folder, so the only way to be rid of them is to disable it. The question is...when?
I am of the opinion that it should not be disabled until the infected PC is clean. If things go wrong with the clean up and a legitimate file is deleted by accident and system restore is disabled, guess what?? You cannot restore the deleted files! So, IMO, an infected restore point is better than no restore point :).

ok, thanks for the info, here is the second logfile

and the other one A0000009.exe trojan horse IRC/backdoor.sdbot.d..... in path system volume ............ and in the same time norton gave me a popup virus alert of hacktool virus
and its always like that i do scan, clean pc. it remains clean as long as i am not logged to net, if i log in then i do virus scan, i always find some viruses. and all the time while i am on the net i get those messenger alerts an that my pc have problem and i shold go to some specific sites to clean it or else :mad:
i am really getting tired of that virus. it seems that i have to reinstall windows :cry: i really can't bring myself to doing that. i'll loose alot of programs that way :(

sshohdi,

please do the following.

===============

When we're done cleaning off your system, I'd recommend that you install all the critical windows updates available from Microsoft, up to service pack 1. This will help to make your system more secure and prevent many 'problems' from reoccurring in the future.

===============

Go to Add/Remove programs and remove(uninstall) the following, if present:

MyWebSearch

The above could appear anywhere within the entry. Be careful not to remove any personal or system software.

===============

Run HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R3 - Default URLSearchHook is missing

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [i25LLPOd] C:\WINDOWS\ptcqqwd.exe

O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusear...?p=ZNxdm795YYUS

O16 - DPF: {56336BCB-3D8A-11D6-A00B-0050DA18DE71} (RdxIE Class) - http://207.188.7.150/2742c8dcaeadd3...ip/RdxIE601.cab

Now, with all windows closed (including Internet Explorer) except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure your able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

files...

C:\WINDOWS\ptcqqwd.exe

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

-

Reboot.

===============

To help protect your system from hostile ActiveX content, or special 'downloadable' files:

Download, install and keep updated, SpywareBlaster. If you've installed it for the first time:

1) Check for any available updates; if present, they'll be automatically downloaded and installed.
2) Next, "Enable all protection".
3) Exit the program.

-

Note: Remember to regularly check for updates.

===============

i then ran avg antivirus and still found 2 viruses which avg deleted
c:\system volume information\_restore{64BF6B2C-463E-4899-825F-194-AF5883CF8]\RP1\A0000066.sys and the other one is the same but in the end A0000067.sys

and the famous norton virus alert of hacktool.rootkit virus, in system32\msdirectx.sys (i don't know why it gives me that although, i was running avg at the time not norton)

what can i do next :mad:

Please go to http://www.sysinternals.com/utilities/rootkitrevealer.html and at the bottom of the page click on the link to download the rootkit revealer. Follow the instructions for running it and when it's finished, copy whatever it finds and post it back here.

I have to tell you that I am not familiar with this tool, so we will have to take this a step at a time :).

ok, i'll do that. but i want to tell u that after i enabled view hidden files. i found the file system32\msdirectx and deleted it. i rebooted and ran avg. no viruses norton found a spybot virus in its quarantine files or something like that and it deleted the file. and i downloaded zone alarm and its working hand in hand with norton internet security. i'll do a scan again after i log off net and c what happens and i'll report back.

i ran rootkitrevealer and it came up with 6 discrepencies, but when i saved the results i couldn't find where the file went so i ran it again but it came with only 5. the last one was missing, later i found the missing file and here is the results

Another weired thing happened today when i opened my pc later today i found an alert of a new hardware found of something called "WUODH" and ofcourse i didn't install any. i did a search on the net for it but i couldn't find anything. do u think this is related to my virus situation. by the way i ran avg in the morning and pc was clean, i'll see what will happen now. i know that u'r fed up with me now, but i don't want to do anything stupid ;-)

If you are having no problems, I would suggest just deleting the contents of the prefetch folder for now. I searched for those others and they appear to be legit.

I think we finally did. we got rid of it :) . i did 2 scans yesterday one with avg and the other with norton and nothing was found. pc is acting normally (except of the oddly found new hardware :rolleyes: , i don't know what is it or from where it came !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). thanks alot , u were very patient with me. i really can't thank u enough. thanks again

i think i was a bit hasty in the last scan after i returned system restore and hidden view of the hidden files, i again found
trojan horse IRC/BackDoor.sdBot.DHV in
c:system volume information\_restore{64BF6B2C-463E-4899-825F-194AF5883F8}\RPI\A0000053.exe (by avg)

and i got a virus alert by norton of a spybot virus although b4 scan i ran both spybot F& D and adware and both found nothing

Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings Link on the left.

Check the box labeled Turn off System restore.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

thanks, i have done that and no virus yet after 2 scans. i am crossing my fingers

Cool :)....

Thanks alot, i have done another scan today and no sign of the virus. thanks again for your support and patience
