A new poll into Operating System popularity by a British computer magazine has revealed that an incredible 37 percent of respondents are still using Windows XP. That's more than Windows 7 which managed to woo 30 percent of the folk taking part, and Vista could only garner a pretty poor 16 percent of support. This being a PC magazine it should come as no great surprise to see Linux being used by 8 percent of respondents and Mac OS by 7 percent. However, what was surprising was the sheer number of people who refuse to let Windows XP die. Was …

I'm an XP lover and while I have moved on to Windows 7, my Windows 7 machines are configured to look like the XP Classic interface as much as possible. I'm pretty happy with these machines for now... I know that there is another popular DaniWeb article concerning why XP won't die but I wanted to provide some related information about the risks in running XP at this time that some of you may have not considered. After April 8, 2014, those of you that continue to run Windows XP will no longer have any type of advantage over attackers …

Well call me crazy, but I'm trying to install Windows 98 on an old XP desktop. The problem comes when I try to boot to the Cd-ROM, after hitting F8 and entering the boot menu and choosing "Cd-ROM" it opens a second menu that promps me to choose the boot divice, the only problem is it won't let me. the header of the second menu just states "Windows 98", and I can't use the up/down arrows, num-pad nor page up/down. after 10 seconds the said menu times-out and the machine defaults to the HDD (loaded with Win XP). I'm kinda …

Hi, I have an Asus laptop, it's about 7 or 8 years old. The only thing wrong is that it is very very slow so I want to do a reinstall. I thought a clean install the best way to go, I did a repair a couple of years ago with the 2 restore disks that came with the laptop but I feel a clean install is warranted now. My question is, can I use the 2 Asus Recovery disks to do do this, and if anyone knows how would appreciate help. I do have a Windows XP Home SP3 disk, …

Hi. I have a c# project created in Visual Studio 2010. The project runs successfully on Windows XP 32bit but I get an error when building on Windows 7 64bit. The error is as follows: Could not load referenced assembly "C:\WINDOWS\system32\stdole.dll". Caught a FileNotFoundException saying "Could not load file or assembly 'C:\WINDOWS\system32\stdole.dll' or one of its dependencies. The system cannot find the file specified.". When I change the path of the assembly from C:\WINDOWS\system32\stdole.dll to C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Visual Studio 10.0\Visual Studio Tools for Office\PIA\Common\stdole.dll, the project builds successfully. Can someone please shed some light on this? Thanks

If you do you think that is a problem with the video card it is attached to the motherboard. I also don't know that much about computers so please try to keep the answer simple.

Hi, I just reloaded my Dell desktop (formatted the hard drive) and now I cannot connect to the internet. I looked in Device Manager and there are no question marks or exclamation points. I am receiving packets (looked at the properties of my connection), but I cannot ping www.google.com via cmd window. I also tried right clicking on my connection and then clicking Properties and clicked Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and selected the Microsoft v 6 (or something like that). When I click on Properties on TCPIP now, I have the settings as Obtain IP Address AUtomatically and Automatic private ip …

(This has been discussed numerous times already, so much so that I've gotten lost wading through the existing threads.) Summary: - In a home Workgroup network of mostly XP computers and one Vista, the goal is that every computer be able to see the entire contents of the other computers via mapped drives. This includes the full contents of the "C:\Documents and Settings" and "C:\Users" folders. - Each computer has its C: drive setup for sharing. - This works mostly, but there is one XP computer whose "C:\Documents and Settings\Owner" files can be accessed but not the "C:\Documents and Settings\Mike" …

Running Win XP Home, SP-3 and, without any warning, suddenly got "The file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. I've researched until I'm blue in the face -- nothing works. I can use My Computer and do a work-around to get everything, but it's a royal pain having to take that many steps to open a file like My …

I suspected I am having a heavy startup so I observed my task manager stats. 1. On startup and stabilizing , my RAM usage is normal and it shows I have enough free memory. 2. If I start any program and use it for a minute, the problem starts. 3. On observing task manager again, I found that my free RAM has dropped very low, used RAM is also low, but the Pageing size has increased a lot. I …

Hello, recently I had a bit of bother with a software with practically destroyed my registry. After resetting my registry to zero (using the repair files) I started reinstalling my software. Owning an iPhone I am obliged to install iTunes (as I don't want to jailbreak my phone). Using the latest version (10.5) I installed iTunes which worked fine but it was unable to recognize my iPhone. Thinking it to be an unproper installation process, I did unstall iTunes using Advanced Uninstaller Free and tried to reinstall iTunes after that. It didn't work. All I got was a very generic …

OK so I am not getting any sound on my computer right now - it is a Dell Latitude D630 and running XP service pack 3 (I believe). Point is, right now my computer does not recognize that I have any sound devices whatsoever. I had been messing with asio4all software and may have changed some settings that have now messed up my regular sound - I tried uninstalling the asio4all to hopefully force it to go back to normal, but of course it did not. I also tried re-downloading the driver, but it just told me that the hardware …

At first I didn't think much of it, but then I noticed that folders on my desktop were disappearing without a trace. The folders were in another folder on my desktop called 'Stuff', and they disappeared before I realized it. I tried to do a System Restore, and the folders came back but not the files themselves. I ran chkdsk and it was deleting indexes …
