I made the mistake of bringing in a "freeware" program and since a week ago have been fighting popup ads and a slow computer. I've deleted some of the culprits but can't end the infection.

My log from hijackthis is below. If anyone can give me advice on how to rid this cancer, I would appreciate it.

jweintraub,

Hi and welcome to the Daniweb forums :).

===============

Please visit at least two of the following sites for an online virus scan:

BitDefender Free Online Virus Scan
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php
Make sure you tick AutoClean under Scan Options.

Panda ActiveScan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
Make sure you tick Disinfect automatically under Scan Options.

Housecall at TrendMicro
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
Make sure you tick Auto Clean.
When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.

eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx

===============

Run HiJackThis then:

1. Click "Open the Misc Tools Section"
2. Click "Open Process manager"

-

Next, while holding down the CTRL key, locate (if present) and click on (highlight) each of the following:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsvsvc\nsvsvc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vidctrl\vidctrl.exe

Now double-check and make sure that only those item(s) above are highlighted, then click "Kill process". Now, click "Refresh", check again, and repeat this step if any remain.

===============

Still in HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - _{CFBFAE00-17A6-11D0-99CB-00C04FD64497} - (no file)

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {4AA870AC-8427-42a4-B92E-ECD956197489} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [checkrun] C:\windows\system32\eliteehl32.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Nsv] C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsvsvc\nsvsvc.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [vidctrl] C:\WINDOWS\system32\vidctrl\vidctrl.exe
O4 - Global Startup: Digital Line Detect.lnk = ?

O23 - Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc) - Unknown owner - C:\WINDOWS\svcproc.exe (file missing)

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

When your done, rescan your system and make sure the following isn't present:

N3 - Netscape ... 5CSBWeb_01.src (or) 5CSBWeb_02.src

If it is, then fix that entry again; sometimes it'll take more than one pass. The actual entry is ok, and won't be deleted, it's the java wrapper marked in red that needs to be removed.

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

folders...

C:\WINDOWS\system32\nsvsvc
C:\WINDOWS\system32\vidctrl

files...

C:\windows\system32\eliteehl32.exe

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

-

Reboot.

===============

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

I ran Housecall and it found 44 non cleanable problems. I can't see the end of the file name line however and can't expand that window. However starting with the first column of Virus name.......

EXPL IFRAMEBO.A is in my Docs & Settings....Content.IE5 folder
TROJ AGENT.UD is in my System Volume Information\_restore{........ folder.
I can't read the end of this line. There are 19 such lines however.
TROJ STERVIS.C has the same incomplete info as the above, and there are 6 such lines.
TROJ NAIL.B also shows the same incomplete file info... and there are 6 such lines.
TROJ DROPPER.DM also shows the same incomplete file info for the first one, the second one of the two shows it's in Windows\system32\config\systemprofile\local settings\temporary internet fil...

TROJ STARTPAG.QY shows the same incomplete file info as most of the above shows, and there are 5 of them, with another found in windows\system32\elitelgc32.exe
TROJ LOWZONE.F has one occurence and starts with the location of most of the files.
TROJ DLOADER.OT has one occurence and also shows the same location data.

Stopped here.....
Do I continue with another scan program or ???
Thanks...

Continued with instructions. Did BitDefender next and it seemed to take care of (delete) the trojan files but not the nsvs/nsvsvc files.

Continued and ran HiJackThis.... everything seemed to work except I could not get rid of 023-Service: System Startup Service (SvcProc).....

Rebooted and new log below..... think I'm making progress. Thanks...

Looking good :).

Go to;

Start>>Run and type regedit
Press enter.
Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\System Startup Service (SvcProc)

If System Startup Service (SvcProc) exists , right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

Now navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\Root\LEGACY_ System Startup Service (SvcProc)

If LEGACY_System Startup Service (SvcProc) exists then right click on it and choose delete from the menu.

Reboot and post another log please. Try to make sure that the formatting is ok after posting. If you see the one above, it has spaces between the lines. Makes it difficult to read the log like that :).

I deleted the first folder but cannot delete the second folder of SvcProc under Enum\Root\..... Haven't rebooted yet. Can I do it in Safe mode? and if so, how do I get to regedit in that mode. Thanks for the help so far.

Download the attached zip file and unzip fixme.reg. Close all browser windows. Double click to run it and when asked if you want to merge with your registry, answer yes.

Reboot and check if it's gone. You should be able to get to regedit the same way in safe mode if that doesn't work.

Don't see the attached zip file.... perhaps not looking at the right part of the thread page. Advise.... Thanks....

oops.... now see it.

Haaa, I tricked you :D.

OK... got the fixme.reg..... ran it. Rebooted. Folder still there. Rebooted in safe mode, ran regedit, tried to remove SvcProc under Enum and still can't delete it. Rebooted in regular mode. Ran Norton WinDoc to clean up small problems.... and also Ad-Aware. The latter showed a clean set of files while before I was getting over 40 problems. Haven't seen any popups since the cleaning process was initiated. Can I live with this SvcProc folder since it seems not to be impacting the computer??

It fine to keep it there :). I just don't like leaving things unfinished :D.
