Hi. I keep getting popups from Starware asking me to install their toolbar, as well as being redirected to their search page when I right-click to open a link in a new window. Sometimes I get redirected to www.abcsearch.com instead of starware.com. I've done a scan using Spybot previously and did a clean up, and now no problem is being detected. Yet the popups and redirecting are persisting.

Here is my HJT log. (Mysterious how there is not a single trace of 'Starware' in it though?!)

izzo,

Hi and welcome to the Daniweb forums :).

===============

Please visit at least two of the following sites for an online virus scan:

BitDefender Free Online Virus Scan
http://www.bitdefender.com/scan/licence.php
Make sure you tick AutoClean under Scan Options.

Panda ActiveScan
http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/com/activescan_principal.htm
Make sure you tick Disinfect automatically under Scan Options.

Housecall at TrendMicro
http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
Make sure you tick Auto Clean.
When it completes, post back the full filename of any files that cannot be cleaned or deleted.

eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner
http://www3.ca.com/securityadvisor/virusinfo/scan.aspx

===============

Run HiJackThis, click "Scan", then check(tick) the following, if present:

R3 - URLSearchHook: (no name) - {283B9514-194D-F348-F9E8-8B9B197DF3A3} - cmon14.dll (file missing)

O1 - Hosts: localhost 127.0.0.1

O3 - Toolbar: (no name) - {08BEC6AA-49FC-4379-3587-4B21E286C19E} - (no file)

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [teqq32] WinInitDll.exe
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [hyandex] corrida.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [xxtoolbar] DCC_send.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [___] SysSupport.exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [scanSYS] srbho.exe

O9 - Extra button: Related - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm
O9 - Extra 'Tools' menuitem: Show &Related Links - {c95fe080-8f5d-11d2-a20b-00aa003c157a} - C:\WINDOWS\web\related.htm

Now, close all instances of Internet Explorer and any other windows you have open except HiJackThis, click "Fix checked".

===============

Locate and delete the following item(s), if present. Make sure you are able to view system and hidden files/ folders:

Search for...

WinInitDll.exe {Make certain you do not delete a legitimate verson of the file!!)
corrida.exe
DCC_send.exe
SysSupport.exe
srbho.exe

...using "Start | Search...".

-

Note that some of these file(s)/folder(s) may or may not be present. If present, and cannot be deleted because they're 'in use', try deleting them in "Safe Mode".

-

Reboot.

===============

After rebooting, rescan with hijackthis and post back a new log. Please let me know how your pc is now.

Hello Crunchie, thanks for the response. :) I have done as you instructed..

---
BitDefender Free Online Virus Scan - removed a few trojans and worms.

Panda ActiveScan - the scan window closes on me all of a sudden while scanning. I tried scanning 3 times, and the window closes without warning each time while scanning halfway.

Housecall at TrendMicro - no threats detected.

eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner - detected and deleted 35 files of one common virus (Alureon).

I take it that "C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuauclt.exe" is not a good thing, yes? Awaiting for your feedback. Thank you!

C:\WINDOWS\System32\wuauclt.exe is a legitimate Windows file. Why do you ask?

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

Now that your PC is clean you need to follow these easy steps to keeping it this way:

Secure your Internet Explorer by going here and following the instructions there.

Better yet, use an alternative browser! Download FireFox and give it a run. It is far more secure than Internet Explorer. Or, you can get Opera which in my opinion, is better still.

Use a firewall to help prevent your PC's control being usurped by undesireables. There is a link to a good, free firewall in my signature.

Install and keep updated, Ad-Aware SE, and Spybot S&D.
Run them both on a regular basis, following the manufacturer's recommendations.

Install an anti-virus. There are some good, free AV's available today. Make sure that it is updated regularly and have it scan your system often.

Check for Windows Updates. Microsoft regularly post updates for your systems safe running. Make sure to take advantage of this. Reboot when installed and return to make sure there are no others.

Clear your Temp folders.
Clear out your Temporary internet files and other temp files.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel >Internet Options.

Under the General tab click the Delete temporary internet files,
delete all Offline content as well. Clear out Cookies.

Also, go to Start > Find/search > Files or folders > in the named box, type: *.tmp and choose Edit > select all -> File > delete.

Empty/delete the entire contents of the C:\Windows\temp folder and C:\temp folder, if you have one. (Contents but not the folder itself.)

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp\

In order to view these files you may have to select 'show hidden files/folders.' Instructions on how to here.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

For XP users.
After something like this it is a good idea to Flush the Restore Points and start fresh.
To flush the XP system Restore Points.

Go to Start>Run and type msconfig. Press enter.

When msconfig opens, click the Launch System Restore Button.
On the next page, click the System Restore Settings link on the left.

Check the box labelled 'Turn off System restore'.

Reboot. Go back in and Turn System Restore Back on. A new Restore Point will be created.

Note that all previous restore points will be lost.

Happy surfing,

crunchie.

Oh yes, I was mistaken about the wuauclt.exe file.. Mostly because I read something about it here: http://startup.iamnotageek.com/srch-wuauclt.exe.html

But as I did further research just now, I learned that it is indeed a legitimate Windows process - Windows Update Auto Update Client. Phew. False alarm, my bad. ;)

My computer seems to be in great condition now. Thank you sooo much for your help, Crunchie. You rock! :D

Btw, can I install a firewall if I already have Norton AV in my computer? I've been wondering about that.

I failed to mention before, that whenever I run a scan with Ad Aware, it freezes at the point of deep scanning the registry. More specifically, in the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/". As I can see, Ad Aware had detected 5 critical objects at that time.

Any ideas on how to get around the freezing problem would be appreciated.

... And I guess I spoke too soon, because the Starware/Abcsearch page redirect is back! Sigh. I'm posting my latest HJT log, just in case it comes in handy..

For now, try running Adaware in safe mode and see if it still freezes.

Hi. I've tried running Ad Aware in safe mode, and it does still freeze. Right when they're scanning at HKLM/Software again.

Go here and download and run Silent Runners.vbs. It generates a log, please post the information back in this thread.
If you have a script blocking program, please allow the file to run. It is not malicious.

Okay, here is the log generated by SilentRunners.

Ok. Have found out that you have a very nasty infection that I have not quite got my head around just yet. I can help you on your way though :).

Download the attached zip file and unzip fixme.reg. Close all browser windows. Double click to run it and when asked if you want to merge with your registry, answer yes.

Download rkfiles.zip
http://skads.org/special/rkfiles.zip
Unzip the contents to a permanent folder.

Reboot in Safe mode.

Doubleclick rkfiles.bat
It will scan for a while, so please be patient.
Wait till the DOS window closes and reboot back to normal mode.

To save some time, could you please have each of the files that rkfiles finds, uploaded for an online scan here;

http://virusscan.jotti.org/

Post the contents of C:\log.txt in your next reply.

Thank you for your help thus far! Here is the content of C:\log.txt :

C:\rkfiles

PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL FILES FOUND BY THIS METHOD ARE NOT BAD FILES, THERE MIGHT BE LEGIT FILES LISTED AND PLEASE BE CAREFUL WHILE FIXING. IF YOU ARE UNSURE OF WHAT IT IS LEAVE THEM ALONE.

As instructed, I have uploaded and scanned the files found above. It appears that 'ntfsnlpa.exe' and 'rdsndin.exe' are indeed malwares. As for 'tsc.exe', the scan results said that it MIGHT be infected/malware (Sandbox emulation took a long time and/or runtime packers were found). The remainder of the files seemed okay.

Download Killbox v2.0.0.175 and unzip the file to your Desktop and have it ready to use.

Save all the below files to a text document (notepad) to be used shortly.

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cisvvc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\loadctr.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\loadctr32.exe

C:\WINDOWS\System32\dmobt.exe

Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here.

Scan with hijackthis and tick the boxes next to all the following entries, then close all browser and explorer windows and hit the "Fix checked" button.

O1 - Hosts: localhost 127.0.0.1

Open the text file you saved previously and right click and drag your cursor over the files to highlight them and then use Control+C to copy them to the clipboard..
Open KILLBOX and go to File...."Paste From Clipboard". All the files should now appear in the box (click on the Tab and check to make sure that only the files I have identified as malware and marked for deletion are there) . Then checkmark the "Delete on Reboot" box..and click the red X. You will get a message saying "File will be deleted on next reboot" , Process and Reboot now?" Click "Yes" and post a new hijackthis log, a silent runners log and an RKfiles log when you have rebooted.

Congratulations! Your log looks clean - good work!

===============

===============

If you have any more problems, post back.

-

Happy surfing,

crunchie.

Ah. I found a new problem in my computer! When I visit certain websites, such as my friends' journals on blogspot.com and lyrics archive sites, I'd get redirected elsewhere after a second or two - to porn-related sites with title bars such as 'Adult Finder'. :( I don't know what triggers the redirecting...

Sorry for the continuous incoming of problems. Let me know what I should do now. Thanks heaps!

Download the Hoster.
Run it and press "Restore Original Hosts" and press "OK". Exit Program.
Note that if you have a custom host file, this will remove it. You can edit the host file with this program too.
Also check your favourites folder for any suspicious entries.

I have done as instructed... The redirect problem is still persisting. I checked by visiting a site at blogspot.com and was redirected to www.look-find.net, which was an adult catalog site.

I did not find any extra links in my favourites folder.

I'm posting my newest HJT log, hopefully it might help somewhat.

Did the hoster work ok for you?

Hmm I have no idea either. Yes, the Hoster did run smoothly for me, if that's what you meant. Initially I thought it was a problem on those websites' part, perhaps their ads were programmed to redirect visitors or something. But then I tested it out on the computer I'm using at work, and I didn't get redirected! So yeah, I guess there's something wrong with my home computer (which is the problematic machine I've been talking about all these while, not my office pc).

What I did note from the redirecting was that
a) I only get redirected once the web page I'm visiting has loaded, as opposed to an immediate redirect the moment I key in the url in the address bar
b) the redirect url appears on the status bar, and it goes something like 'http://(ip address which I can't recall)/direct=?(random characters)'. It's not precise at all though, I'm only 100% sure that it always starts with an ip address. Anyway, that's the base url, before loading a porno site of some sort

Would it help if I take a screenshot and find out the exact redirect url for you? I really have not encountered something like this before, so I dunno what the next step should be.

Just a li'l suspicion... Could these two items in my HJT log possibly be part of the problem?

O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{3163B5E2-D1D2-4152-BA46-336A26D6E701}: NameServer = 69.50.184.86,85.255.112.9
O17 - HKLM\System\CCS\Services\Tcpip\..\{98464CEA-48BA-4636-96FD-A090EDFFF924}: NameServer = 69.50.184.86,85.255.112.9

I did an online search, and this person seems to have the same problem I'm having.

Oh, and I found out the redirect url's format is this:
http://(ip address)/?to=dname&from=in

Got that info from here (same case as well).

Yup, I took a look at a thread in Tech Support Guy's forums here, and from there I gathered I definitely should fix the 2 HJT items I mentioned above. Coz one of the name servers traces back to AtrivoTechnologies that owns the porno redirect, and the other to somewhere in Amsterdam - not at all from my ISP (I'm from Malaysia). :)

But I'm at the office now, so I shall have a go at fixing this later. If there's any other advice you can offer to me, just fire away. Thanks!
