Hi, I'm looking for help with my sons PC. When it does run it runs very slow. The task manager can show the cpu at only 5% for example but the light (hdd or cpu, not sure) is on constant as if it's working away.
I ran adaware scan and only one infection found. Also ran the checks recomended by you but couldn't get a dds log, prog. would run but no log appeared. Here are the other logs required.
Cheers,
Ronnie.

Please Run the ESET Online Scanner and attach the ScanLog with your post for assistance.

You will need to use Internet Explorer to to complete this scan.
You will need to temporarily Disable your current Anti-virus program.

Be sure the option to Remove found threats is checked and the option to Scan unwanted applications is Checked.
When you have completed that scan, a scanlog ought to have been created and located at C:\Program Files\EsetOnlineScanner\log.txt. Please post that log for us as directed below.

ALSO, please submit a HijackThis Log along with your post.
**** Also, please run HijackThis and open the Misc Tools section.
Under the System Tools section, Click on Open Uninstall Manager and Click Save list.
Save it to your desktop and then please post this Uninstall List as directed below.
Post back here with the ESET log and the two HJT logs.

First glaring issue I see is there is NO anti-virus program installed on the computer. That is an absolute MUST today. I also don't see a firewall, another must.
The two security programs you have running are antispy/antimalware programs, neither offer protection against viruses.
Also, unless AdAware is the PAID version it is totally usesless to have running as a service, and therefore all the time, because it does nothing but run.
Frankly it isn't the program it used to be years ago and if it were my computer I would uninstall it completely.
SpyBot is an excellent program for SCANNING but the TeaTimer portion, which IS running can actually interfere with any fixes attempted by removal programs. That should be disabled:
Disable Spybot's TeaTimer

* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
* If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
select
Advanced Mode
* On the left hand side, click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident icon in the list
* Uncheck
Resident TeaTimer
and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer

You need to get a good FREE anti-virus program on there and I recommend Avira, it is small, non-intrusive but offers superb realtime protection.
Download, install, update and do a Full System scan with it. Have it remove/quarantine anything found.
When it is complete, reboot the computer and do a new HJT scan, save the log and post back here with that new HJT log. I will then give instructions on turning off some of the unneeded auto starting programs, which certainly contribute to making the computer run slow.
Avira can be configured to auto update daily and also to do a full scan weekly. I will explain how to do that when you come back with the next HJT log.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
I actually disabled the firewall and uninstalled Avira as a temp measure to speed things up.
I've reinstated all as requested and please find the logs.
Thanks again for your help.
Ronnie

Download and run this tool:
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Then reboot the computer and run a new HJT scan and save the log. Please make sure that WordWrap is OFF. I had to redo your last HJT log to make it readable.

I would also like to see an Uninstall list generated by using HJT. To do this do the following:
Start HijackThis
Click on the Misc Tools button
Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad into a reply

Hi there, I don't want to appear impatient or ungratefull but I haven't had an update for about six days now
Regards,

I am very sorry for the delay. I have been away and we are very short handed here.
Can I ask your actual location? I realize you have a wireless set up on there but the locations showing are extremely varied and not likely to be correct.

Your Java is way out of date, you need to go here
http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

Download the Offline Install package and save it to the desktop.
Then close all browsers and go to Add/Remove and Uninstall
J2SE Runtime Environment 5.0

After that double click the install file on the desktop to install the newest version. Watch the install very closely, it will only take a few moments, because very often unneeded toolbars are included. If you see any of those noted just remove the check mark next to the toolbar and then it will NOT be installed.
After you have installed the new version go back to the download page and on the right side click Verify Now. This will take you to the verification page to assure the new version installed correctly.
After that run a new HJT system scan and post back here with the log and also the info on your exact location.

hi there, good to hear from you again.
My location is South lanarkshire, Scotland UK.
Just a note, after doing this the comp appears to be a bit slower, Is this expected?
Please find the requested log below.
Looking forward to hearing from you
Regards.

The computer shouldn't be slower after this update. Couple things running there that need to be stopped for sure...
BitTorrent DNA Absolutely...this is a HUGE cause of infection. Please see section 1a of our read me sticky.
1APlease Uninstall or Disable any P2P (peer-to-peer) programs on the infected computer before posting in this forum. Rather than write a long piece on the dangers of P2P, I’m just going to say this:

P2P software circumvents common-sense security measures and opens a user’s computer to a world of hurt.
Our regular volunteers' time is valuable and most are not willing to waste it on a machine that is almost certain to be reinfected in short order.
So, please remove or disable all P2P software for the duration of the cleaning process. Failure to do so may result in your thread being ignored.

You also have BearShare installed which tells me that P2P is a common activity on the computer. This too is unsafe.
At the time of this last scan there was an update to Google chrome being installed, updates likely are going to slow the computer somewhat.
You also have AdAware Service and Search & Destroy TeaTimer running all the time. Both are unnecessary and CAN both stop or interfere with any fixes attempted. Both of these need to be turned off.
To turn off TeaTimer do the following:
* Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode
* If it is not already set to do this, go to the Mode menu
select
Advanced Mode
* On the left hand side, click on Tools
* Then click on the Resident icon in the list
* Uncheck
Resident TeaTimer
and OK any prompts.
* Restart your computer

As far as the AdAware frankly I would uninstall that all together. It just isn't the program it once was and unless you have the paid version this AdAware Service does nothing but run, it offers no protection.

I asked about your location because you show two different locations in your log;
The U.K. and the US and while the U.K. one does show as U.K. it is somewhat questionable and of course since you are not in the US that one shouldn't be there either.
I want you to run HiJackThis again and put check marks next to the following entries:

Hi,
I've done everything you suggested but can't remove Bearshare.
I go to add/remove, click on bearshare, follow instruction but when it gets to "are you sure you want to uninstal" I click uninstal and nothing happens.
I removed DNA ok.
Anyway here's my new hjt log.
Look forward to hearing from you again.

It is possible that Bearshare is no longer on the computer and just the listing remains in Add/Remove.
Do a file search for it and see if it can be found.
Is the computer still running slow and hanging?

Hi,
The computer is running a lot better. Takes a wee while to switch on but then appears better than before.
I checked and bearshare is on the hdd. add/remove shows it to be 30.27Mb and the folder in Program files is there with all the files. The program started fully ok.
I can't explain it. What if I deleted the folder?
Cheers,

You cannot just delete a program, you do have to Uninstall it. So it IS listed in Add/Remove but it did not uninstall when you chose that in Add/Remove?

Try this, Revo Uninstaller Free
Install this program and then run it. You can choose to Uninstall this Bearshare with it.

yes it is listed.
When I click to remove it asks for a reason from a drop down menu. I've got to select something before the "next" button is available. Choose next, it asks if I really want to uninstall, I then click uninstall and it just goes back to add/remove.
Hope this all makes sense.

Ran the above program but it ends with a scan for leftover registry items. They look like they're in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and AppID. Is it ok to check them and delete?

It lists 1172 of various things?
{1FC51815-FA4C-4F8B-B143-2CO45C8EA2FC} and also NCTAudioCDGraber2dll and DiscoveryHelper.imesh6Discovery are just a few.
Does this sound about right?
I'm unsure if it's safe to delete.
It lists various folder paths but says only bolded checked items will be deleted.

Hi again.
Bottled it, didn't delete anything alough bearshare is not there no. Just all the registry keys i'm sure. Here is my hjt log.
Cheers,

Ran the above program but it ends with a scan for leftover registry items. They look like they're in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and AppID. Is it ok to check them and delete?

You were only removing Bearshare. Leave all else alone. Not sure exactly what you meant in your next post
Bottled it, didn't delete anything alough bearshare is not there no. Just all the registry keys i'm sure.
Are you saying that Revo didn't see Bearshare so it couldn't remove it but you DO see it in the registry?
You can use Revo to only search for Bearshare by typing it's name in the search box.

Hi, Revo found Bearshare and removed it but during the removal it searches for leftover registry items and this is what I was unsure about.

Cheers.

If those were Bearshare left overs then they can be removed. Any others leave alone. So be sure to check each listing to be sure it IS a Bearshare entry.

Hi, I didn't delete any of the leftovers, I was too scared as I wasn't sure what i was doing. Bearshare has gone, just the leftover registry items left. Don't know if that matters.
How did the latest hjt log look.
M/c running a lot better once it has booted up. Still takes ages to boot up though.
Cheers,

As I said, the Bearshare registry items Can be removed using Revo.
I honestly don't see anything else you need to turn off at boot up. How long does the actual boot process take?
Are you only connected via wireless connection? Just curiosity.

Hi
I've just timed how long and its 13 min's. Once it has booted up all is ok.
The machine is about 6 years old and has a 2.9Ghz processor and according to system properties has 704 Mb of ram although I do remember adding more memory when new because it was a basic comp and ran slow, but the extra memory fixed that.
I can live with the boot time since everything else is ok.
I'll run with it for a week or so and then mark as solved if all ok.
That ok for you?
Regards

You're the boss, it's your computer. Let us know. Though that boot time is extremely long.
