Hi,

Yesterday I received an IM from a friend telling me to look at her new pictures she posted online. Of course I clicked the link and downloaded it and now my computer is not working properly. I have been getting tons of pop-ups and also the virus was sent out to everyone on my buddy list. Not to mention that my PC is running extremely slow. I have already tried to run ad-aware and norton symantec antivirus, but it does not seem to be getting rid of the virus completely. If you have any suggestions, it would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jackie

Let's start by getting a snapshot of the state of your system.

Download the (free) HijackThis utility. Once downloaded, follow these instructions to install and run the program:

Create a folder for HJT outside of any Temp/Temporary folders and move HijackThis to that folder now. A folder such such as C:\HijackThis or C:\Spyware Tools\HijackThis will do.

Run HijackThis, but do not have HJT fix anything yet; only have it scan your system! Once the scan is complete, the "Scan" button will turn into an option to "Save log...".
Save the log in the folder you created for HijackThis; the saved file will be named "hijackthis.log". Open the log file with Windows Notepad, and cut-n-paste the entire contents of the Notepad file here.

The log contents will tell us a lot about what "nasties" have crept into your system, and once we analyse the log we can tell you what to do from there.

OK- you've definitely got "unwanted guests". Please do the following:

You will need to close/quit all web browser programs and disconnect from the Internet for the following, so you should print out these instructions or save them into a text file with Notepad.

Before beginning the procedures below, uninstall these programs using your Add/Remove Programs control panel:

ViewPoint/ViewPoint manager
Wild Tangent
MyWebSearch

1. Download and install these utilities (but do not run scans with them yet):

ewido Security Suite - http://www.ewido.net/en/download/
Microsoft Anti-Spyware beta - http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...&displaylang=en
Ad Aware SE Personal - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
SpyBot Search & Destroy - http://www.safer-networking.org/

- Open ewido. In the main screen, click "Update" and click "Start Update". After the update process completes, exit from Ewido.

- Open MS Antispyware beta. Make sure the "AntiSpyware Autoupdater" feature is enabled, and that it has downloaded the most current antispyware updates. Close the program after you've verified this.

- Open SpyBot and use its update feature to download and install the most current spyware definitions file. Close the program once the update is complete.

- Open AdAware, click the "Check for updates now" button, and follow the prompts to install the most current spyware definition database. Close the program once the update is complete.

- Open your anti-virus program and use its update feature to make sure that you have the most current virus definitions installed. As with the above programs, don't run a scan yet; just close it once it is updated.

3. Download and install the CleanUp! utility, but don't run it yet.

4. Run HijackTHis again, put a check mark next to the following entries, and then click the "Fix checked" button. Close HJT once it has finished performing its fixes:

5. Reboot into Safe Mode (you get to the safe mode boot option by hitting the F8 key as your computer is starting up).

6. Run CleanUP! It may take a while for the program to perform its cleaning, so be patient. Close the program when it has finished.

7. Run full system scans with SpyBot, ewido, AdAware, MS Antispyware, and your avnti-virus utility; have the programs fix all malicious items they find.

When ewido finds the first malicious object on your system, it will ask you if it should clean it. When it asks this, put a checkmark in the lower left corner of the box that says "Perform action on all infections", then choose clean and click OK.
Save the log file that ewido will create after it finishes scanning; you'll be including that log in your next post here.

8. Open Windows Explorer, and in the Folder Options->View settings under the Tools menu, select "show hidden files and folders", and uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extentions for known file types".

- Locate and delete the following files (some of these should already have been deleted by the removal utilities):

C:\WINDOWS\av.exe
C:\windows\timessquare.exe
C:\windows\adtech2006.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\igps.exe
04cg0ryk.dll
C:\WINDOWS\jwurfc.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\ir66l5js1.dll
C:\WINDOWS\csvas.exe
C:\WINDOWS\System32\pgws.exe
C:\Program Files\ISTsvc\istsvc.exe

- Delete the following folders entirely:

C:\Program Files\Viewpoint
C:\Program Files\WildTangent
C:\Program Files\ISTsvc
C:\Program Files\MYWEBSEARCH

9. Empty your Recycle Bin, reboot normally, run HijackThis again, and post the new log. Also post the log that ewido generated.

HELP

I have the same problem. I have done what was recommended for the first person, but to no avail.

This problem and the POP UPS are ver annoying.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi, and welcome. The forums rules state that you need to create your own topic, and not hijack another (even if it is old, or related). Since some of the mods may not be around for a while im going to help you here but Im sure this will be split as needed. Any ways off we go.

Start by booting into safe mode and enabling hidden folders/files. To do this od the following.

file 1 Click the Start Button

2 In the Start menu click Control Panel

3 In the Control panel Window click the Folder Options Icon

4 The folder Options Window will now Open

5 Click the View Tab

6 In the view tab window look down the list for a section marked Hidden Files and Folders

7 Enable the option Show Hidden Files and Folders by left clicking the radio button on the left of the option with your mouse. Then uncheck Hide protected operating system files. CLick yes to the dialog.

8 Press the Apply button

9 On the next screen press OK to exit

10 You should now be able to view the hidden files and folders.

------------------------

1. If the computer is running, shut down Windows, and then turn off the power
2. Wait 30 seconds, and then turn the computer on.
3. When you see the black-and-white Starting Windows bar at the bottom of the screen, start tapping the F8 key. The Windows 2000 Advanced Options Menu appears.
4. Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected. In most cases, it is the first item in the list and is selected by default.
5. Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Once in safe mode scan again with HJT and check the following.

Hi, Log looks alot cleaner. Are you stillgetting pop-ups? If you dont use a webdialer or any dialer. Have HJT fix this.

O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [li-speed00147] "c:\program files\Webdialer\li-speed00147.exe " -m

Then go to Add remove programs and uninstall anything having to do with Webdialer. If nothing is there delete the following folder c:\program files\Webdialer\.

Im also not to sure about this,

vice.exe

But I wouldnt take any action on it now.

POst a new log, if you remove the webdialer. But tell me if your still getting popups.

Has the PC been rebooted since then?

You have/had a Look2Me Infection here
O20 - Winlogon Notify: Run - C:\WINDOWS\system32\hr0q05d5e.dll

Generally without running a specific tool, they do mutate and change names. So with that being said I fear it may return...

Wouldnt hurt to run Spysweeper and remove what it finds
http://malwareteks.com/dload.php?action=download&file_id=5

Attach that log when returning to see if Look2Me was still present..

Hello.
This is my first time here.
My friend sent me an IM with the Facebook/MySpace pic virus in it, and not having heard of it before, I opened the link. I stopped it from fully getting in, I guess, because I keep getting these pop-ups from Microsoft AntiSpyware...
I installed (but did not run):
Ad Aware
Search and Destroy
ewido Security Suite
(I already had the Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta on there.)

Is there anything I should do other than to run these programs in safe mode after restarting my computer?
Thank you so much! (In advance.) I'm trying to get this one done without Dad's help, for once. Hehe.

Hi docisley1859,

First of all- welcome to DaniWeb :)

We ask that members not tag their questions on to a thread previously started by another member (regardless of how similar your problem might seem). Not only does it divert the focus of the thread away from the original poster's problem, but it also makes it less likely that you yourself will get the individual attention that you need.

Please start your own thread and post your questions and HJT log in that thread.

For a full description of our posting guidelines and general rules of conduct, please see this page:

http://www.daniweb.com/techtalkforums/faq.php?faq=daniweb_policies

Thanks for understanding.

No problem at all- it's a very common thing for new members to do. :)
By the way: your HJTlog is clean, but if you want to check for/remove possible infections, then yes- install the most current updates for your antispyware and antivirus programs, run them in Safe Mode, and let them fix whatever they find. If you need help after that, start your own thread, and in it, post a new HJT log, the scan report log that ewido generated, and any specific questions you have.
