This has happened to me a some time ago so I reformatted and everything was fine for a while--'till it happened again. Thanks for the help.

Quick diagnostic roadmap (context: reported certain sites reachable from another PC but not from the affected machine; observed no obvious infection in the HijackThis output). That pattern usually indicates a local networking/configuration problem rather than an ISP-wide block: common culprits are hosts-file hijacks, wrong DNS, an unwanted proxy, local firewall/AV or an LSP/Winsock corruption.

Fast, prioritized checks (do these first):

Run at a Command Prompt:

nslookup problematicdomain.com
ping -n 4 problematicdomain.com
tracert problematicdomain.com

copy %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts %userprofile%\desktop\hosts.bak
notepad %windir%\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset

Interpretation and next moves:

  • nslookup returns no IP or a private/local address -> inspect the hosts file (backup first) for unexpected mappings and remove them. If DNS looks wrong, try switching the adapter to a known public DNS server temporarily.
  • nslookup returns a correct IP but HTTP(S) fails -> check for a local block (firewall/AV/web‑filter, proxy or P2P/IP‑blocklist). Temporarily disable those components for a short test (disconnect from untrusted networks while they are off).
  • tracert shows the route failing inside the LAN -> router or local firewall. If it fails beyond the gateway, the ISP or upstream device may be involved.
  • If accessing by IP in the browser works while name lookup fails, it is definitely DNS/hosts related.

Practical cautions and finishing steps:
Always back up the hosts file and document changes. Resetting Winsock requires a reboot. If a security product is found blocking access, re-enable it after testing and adjust its whitelist rather than leaving it disabled. After restoring access, run up‑to‑date antivirus and an LSP/Winsock check utility; if the problem persists despite clean scans, a focused repair (system restore, repair install) is the last resort.

There are no infections evident in your log; can you tell us exactly which websites give you trouble?

Some of the sites I can't access are hotmail.com, dictionary.com, some links in my teacher's website. I can access all of these sites and links on another computer.
