Agree with — try an earlier restore point first, but if that doesn’t work follow these targeted steps. Boot Windows XP to Safe Mode (press F8 during boot) and run System Restore from there — either via Control Panel or by typing rstrui.exe. Safe Mode prevents many drivers and protections from loading, and that often allows a restore that fails in normal mode. (support.microsoft.com)

If System Restore still refuses to run or you get blank/unresponsive dialogs like described, temporarily disable any antivirus/anti‑malware self‑protection modules (they can block restore operations) and retry in Safe Mode. If you can’t interact with the GUI, run rstrui.exe from a command prompt in Safe Mode. While troubleshooting, run a full disk check (chkdsk) and a current anti‑malware scan from Safe Mode with Networking — malware often interferes with restore and with Explorer UI. (help.malwarebytes.com)

If restore points appear corrupted or System Restore repeatedly fails, clear the old restore points and recreate a clean one: either disable then re‑enable System Restore or use Disk Cleanup’s System Restore option to remove old points (this deletes previous restore points). After clearing, reboot, make sure the system is clean from malware, then create a fresh restore point. Back up important files before doing these steps; if problems persist a repair of the System Restore component or a repair install of XP may be needed. (support.microsoft.com)
