Computer Shut Down Problems

Hey Everyone,

I am fairly unversed in computers, so I'm going to need my hand held to get through this.

I am a college student who owns a IBM Thinkpad R52, which to this point has been nothing but perfect.

It has a Pentium M Processor 1.73 GHz and 1.00 GB of RAM.

The issue started when I downloaded a game off of Yahoo games the other day. I could play the game for a few minutes, but the computer would always shut down in the middle of gameplay. In most of the other computers I had, shutdown would always be preceded by a blue screen or a warning or something. This just shuts down. I thought it was just the game, but then I tried a different game for the first time the other day and before I even got to start playing it shut down.

Now it's begun shutting down at random when I'm just browsing through websites or what not. Any suggestions? I've already run virusware and spyware programs.

Yes, by the way welcome to Daniweb. Lets begin by installing HijackThis , a type of diagnostic software. Before downloading, create a new folder in Program Files.

To do this, open up My Computer > Local Disc > Program Files. While in here, right click, and enter a new folder, naming it 'HJT'. With this still open, download HJT, and drag the HJT icon into this new folder. After doing this, open up HJT and click 'scan only'.

After running a scan, save the log. Copy this log into a reply here, and we'll take a look at it.

Ok, now you're gonna open up HJT, and check the following:

After checking these, be sure to close every other window, and hit 'fix checked'.

After doing this, download Ewido and SpySweeper (links both found in my sig below). After downloading, update definitions for both and run scans for both. Be sure to save the scan logs for each ones.

Then, reply here with a new HJT log, Ewido log and SpySweeper log.

That could be heat-related. Does the machine have to be running for at least a little while before it crashes, or will it crash right after being turned on (that is, while it is still "cold")?

Are the air intake and exhaust vents free of dust? Shine a flashlight into the various opening around the sides of the machine; make sure that nothing is obstructing the airflow, and verify that the fan is working properly.

It could very well be a thermal problem in that case, especially given the fact that your HijackThis log shows no signs of malicious infections. If you do see any amount of dust/dirt/etc. build-up in the vents or on the fan, it would be a good idea to at least give the machine a good blast with a can of compressed air. If you're comfortable do it, open up the laptop's chassis to make sure all of the "guts" are getting a thorough cleaning.

My computer will not stay on long enough for either Spysweeper or Ewido to run to completion. It shuts itself down within 2 minutes of each program running. I have tried each 4 times (and it takes a long time for this computer to start itself back up).

Anyway, here is the new HJT log anyway. And when the scanners were running, they didn't find anything for the time they WERE running.

Any idea of what to think about now?

I've been wondering if it were heat related myself. It has not done this after being off for a while, no. It does seem that during periods of stress (i.e. running ANY program or trying to load a graphic-heavy webpage) is when it is most likely to shut itself off.

As far as checking it goes, there is only one vent in there. I don't see any dust or anything huge or obstructive in there, and hot air is blowing out of it. I dont know if the fan is working, I wouldn't be able to tell, but I'm assuming if hot air is coming out that the fan is indeed working.

1. If you haven't opened up a laptop before, you might not want to go that route; getting some of those beasties open without breaking anything can be pretty difficult. Get a can of compressed air and spray it into the laptop's vents from the outside; that should force some of the crud out.

2. A RAM issue? Good thought; it definitely could be. You can "stress test" your RAM with two free utilities: memtest86, and Microsoft's Windows Memeory Diagnostic.

I would think it to be a RAM problem simply because it's especially when the computer is being heavily taxed for resources (mostly playing a game) that it shuts down.

Yeah, RAM is a common failure point in cases of random shutdowns/BSODs, so although it doesn't sound like the most likely suspect in this particular case, it is worth testing to rule out the possibility.

Also- RAM faults can be subtle, exhibiting themselves only (as sykopath8 mentioned) during times of heavier resource usage.
