After cleaning up (I think) a nasty IE hijacker (MainSearch),
I still have the problem of having all my toolbars disabled (they show up greyed out).

When I go into the registry and remove the NoBandCustomize key,
It just pops back up when I start IE again. There must be something that was set in IE to default it, but I have no clue how to solve it.

I'm almost to the point of going through a whole IE re-install... it's driving me crazy

Is there anyone here that has been through this and can help me?

I'm not familiar with some of the tools you use in this forum (such as HijackThis, etc) to help, but I'm pretty sufficient at computer work (I'm a computer software architect by trade).

Thanks,
John

Could be the rements of a virus. Lets see :).

Download hijackThis. Extract it to its own folder. Then run it and select. Do system scan and save log. Post the contents of the log that pops up.

Here's the Results of the HijackThis scan...

Sure enough, you still have some things. Run HJT again, and check the following.

If it sais it found an update hit Download Updates. If it doesnt it will automatically tell you and exit. Now for the scanning part. Hit start and then Ok. The program should start scanning. -----------------------------------------------------

Download pocket killbox from http://www.thespykiller.co.uk/files/killbox.exe & put it on the desktop where you can find it easily

Now Start killbox Copy the list of files below to the clipboard by selecting all of them with your mouse (Left click the start of the list and drag the mouse to the bottom of the list) and when they are all selected ( highlighted in blue) right click on any part of the blue area and say copy

In the Killbox, Go to the toolbar press file and select Paste from clipboard. The first file name will appear in the window and if the file exists it will appear in blue under that window then select standard file kill, press the red X button, say yes to the prompt and once the file deleted message comes up then press the red X again and continue to press untill the last file on the list appears in the window & it says deleted.

File List:

C:\WINNT\system32\ypmak.dll

---------------------------------------------------

Then please download ewido - www.ewido.net - Install. Update. Scan. Remove anything it finds. (Save log)

Post the About:Buster log, the ewido log, and a new HJT log.

BRILLIANT!:cheesy: You rock tayspen

I've been trying to clean this thing up for days, and you helped me out in a matter of hours.

I'm usually good about having my guard up (pop up blockers and spyware detectors), I'm not sure how I let this thing get through.

Thanks for the help....

Oh.. and here is the logs you sid to post...

Thanks again...:cheesy:

Hmm, I want to make sure ewido takes out as much as possible, there were some cleaning errors in it. Please run ewido in safe mode. Then post a fresh ewido log, and HJT log.

EDIT: Not sure who marked this a solved, but he is not clean yet ;).

That was me. I was a little overzealous. I considered it solved because I now have my toolbars re-enabled :)

I'll need to get to that later as I'm not at home now.

Thanks again for the help
