I was recently infected with the hacktool.rootkit virus. The file msdirectx.sys has been quarantined by my symantec antivirus, but cannot be repaired. Each time I restart my computer, it detects the virus and quarantines it again. I have included my current HiJackThis log and would really appreciate help getting rid of this virus! Thanks!

Hi,
Download Ewido and install it. Then run, you will receive a warning message saying "Database not found", click "OK" for this. Next in the main screen, click "Update" and click "Start Update". After the update process, exit from Ewido.

Download LQfix.exe from one of the following locations:
http://www.downloads.subratam.org/LQfix.exe
http://miekiemoes.geekstogo.com/tools/LQfix.exe
Save it to your Desktop. Do not run it now!

Reboot in Safe Mode:-
Restart (or switch ON) the PC.
Then, keep tapping the F8 Key.
From the menu that will be displayed, out of which choose Safe Mode and press Enter.

Uninstall this Software from Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel:-
NavExcel

Run HijackThis and click Do only a System scan.
Then put a check mark infront of below listed entries:-

Close all other open programs except Hijackthis and click the button Fix Checked in HijackThis.

Delete this folders:-

Run Ewido, click on the "Scanner" button in the left menu, then click on the "Complete System Scan" button.
If ewido finds anything, it will pop up a notification. You can select "Clean" and check the boxes "Perform action with all infections" and "Create encrypted backup" before clicking on OK.
When the scan finishes, click on "Save Report". This will create a text file.

  • Double-Click LQfix.exe and click Next > Next > Install.
  • Leave the default settings, if you change them, the fix will Fail!
  • You need an active internetconnection, so make sure your you're not blocking any connection now.
  • Now make sure the "Launch LQfix" box is checked.
  • Click the Finish button, after clicking the Finish button the fix will start.
  • Follow the on-screen prompts.
  • Your system will reboot afterwards.
  • Please be patient after the reboot, there is a script running in the background that needs to complete.

Then do a scan with HJT and post a new log by using Add Reply.

I was able to complete most of the steps. I could not find file lockx.exe to delete. Here is my new HJT log. Please let me know what else I need to do. Thanks!

Hi,
Log looks clean :) But to make sure that everything is all right, perform an online virus scan at Panda ActiveScan with the "Disinfection" option enabled. Save the log it gives after the scan.

Download WinPFind.ZIP and completely extract it to a folder. Then run WinPFind.exe and click "Start Scan". When the scan completes, click "Copy to Clipboard" button to copy the log it gives, and please post it here along with the Panda log.

Panda Log:

Hi,

There are some things to remove! Delete this folder:-
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Favorites\Casino & Carrers

Next, go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. Here at the Command Prompt, type the command:
rd /s /q c:\RECYCLER
and press Enter key. (Note that there is a SPACE after "rd" and before "/s" and also after "/s" before "/q". That is:
rdSPACE/sSPACE/qSPACEc:\recycler)

Apart from this, everything is looking good. Do you still get any warnings/alerts from your antivirus related to Hacktool.Rootkit?

Everything looks good now! Thanks for your help!

There hasn't been any evidence of anything happening with my computer for the past day, but this notice just popped up:

Scan type: Auto-Protect Scan
Event: Threat Found!
Threat: Hacktool.Rootkit
File: C:\WINDOWS\system32\SVKP.sys
Location: C:\WINDOWS\system32
Computer: UNC-CF391C99DB6
User: NETWORK SERVICE
Action taken: Clean failed : Quarantine failed : Access denied
Date found: Saturday, October 22, 2005 9:03:39 PM

What should I do about this?

Hi,
Hmm..its back again!
Download Sysclean Pacakge, create a folder named Sysclean on Desktop, and put the downloaded file to that folder. Next download the pattern file for Windows OS (pattern file will have a name like lpt853.zip ) and extract the contents of the ZIP file to the same Sysclean folder.

Boot in SAFE Mode.

Next, double-click on the sysclean.com file, and after few seconds, the Sysclean window appears. Here make sure that "Automatically clean or delete infected files" option is selected. Then click "Scan". After the scan is complete it gives a log, save the log file.

Are you using any Firewall? If you are not using any, then you can go for ZoneAlarm Free Version.
