In case you looked at this thread without actually reading any posts, I would like to inform you that there was not ONE log that didn't require cleaning out. Every one of them had spy/malware in them.
Your suggestion that your remedy would solve a lot of other posters problem has only slight merit as we would only be fixing a portion of their problem.
IE is a magnet for all thingz related to crapware & these issues need to be resolved first.
Thanx for your input though, & if after doing all the above the matter remains unresolved, your suggestion could be put to them.

In my post I talked about my personal experience, never once did I comment on the merit of other previous replies or ask to be judged. Why must others, oh, first of all download a bunch of programs if they could simply do what I suggested and see if the problem can be fixed? The problem is not IE, it's making the icons appear and work. My post was simply a suggestion, not an attack on anybody's manhood over their reply on an internet forum. And last I checked, this thread was not about using a bunch of software to evaluate someone's registry, but about making the desktop icons work again. Download and using software to clean our registry and hidden directories etc = not the only way to make desktop shortcuts work again, and in fact it would save a lot more time if someone tried what I said first, and see if it'd work, and if it doesn't, go the complicated route. If someone's going to get their manhood over that, then be my guest. If cleaning the HDD was the purpose of the original poster's question, then we might as well also talk about software clashes, incompatibilities, different operating systems, and the list can go on and on and on.

And this thread certainly has nothing to do with crunchie's personal bias against IE as evident here.

Oh no, my first post here, and already someone felt the need to judge on the "merit" of my post, assume that I didn't read the whole thread(when it's pretty evident from my post that I had), impose his "forum superiority" and in general just let me know the seniority of the forum?
Man, I usually just have 3 words to say to such people: "get a life".

The hijack log is a useful tool but is it a MUST to restore EVERY desktop icon problem? Absolutely not. And this thread certainly has nothing to do with crunchie's personal bias against IE as evident here. I mean, we can start another thread talking about IE vs Netscape vs Opera and I bet you a million faults can be listed for each browser, but again that has nothing to do with the original poster's problem.

I think you were touchy about my post to begin with, hence my reply. I have no desire to read your previous posts to dissect your character, and I don't care if you're male or female. However, I have no intention to fight with you or attack you, so I'll let this one go and hold nothing against you.

Why would I need to post a log? I appreciate people helping others, but I already solved my problem.. sure the log might reveal a couple of other problems and I actually know enough to fix them myself, you'll need to wait for desperate soul who will undoubtedly post their LOG for you to dissect ;-)

A major problem right-off-the-bat is that neither your Windows XP nor your Internet Explorer are up-to-date. Partly due to this, you have been loaded with nasties. As soon as you clean up your problems, download all the patches you can get.

Most of the rest of what you have can be removed automagically by Ad-Aware and Spybot - Search & Destroy. Run each individually, but be sure to update the detection data files before running either program.

Then you can post your new HjT log back here.

I was not successful in getting mozilla to work on the computer. I did get adaware and already had spybot. I was able to get a hijack this log which may help explain this mess. Any help you can give that I can carry out using a floppy would be great. Thanks a bunch.

I did everything as instructed, but the only exception; I couldn't find: C:\Windows\dllcont.exe< this one. I would like to know if everything is alright and if I can use Warezp2p(Let me know if you know of any better and faster), once everything is ok. Log is good. Any file sharing program is risky as it is a likely gate for virus' & worms to enter your computer. Ultimately the decision is yours. Just the name 'warez' is enough to keep me away. Remember that you could be downloading files from an infected computer.

Instead, I found that simply by turning off the Active Desktop viewed as a webpage, all the icons and background image simply came back.

Amazing.. nobody suggested that. I bet it's the case for a lot of others as well.. try it lol.

In case you looked at this thread without actually reading any posts, I would like to inform you that there was not ONE log that didn't require cleaning out. Every one of them had spy/malware in them.
Your suggestion that your remedy would solve a lot of other posters problem has only slight merit as we would only be fixing a portion of their problem.
IE is a magnet for all thingz related to crapware & these issues need to be resolved first.
Thanx for your input though, & if after doing all the above the matter remains unresolved, your suggestion could be put to them.

I'm having the same problem- hopefully someone can help me. I ran ad-aware and found a bunch of crap so far, but it didn't solve the problem. Here's my hi-jack this log. The only other thing I can think of that caused this was the deletion of a couple of .dll's during a program removal. Could this cause the same problem, and if so, what fixes it?

Nothing is lost. Nescape/Mozilla can import favorites from Internet Explorer, and Microsoft provides favtool.exe, which works both ways.
But these are only temporary solutions. Your long-term problem is a hijacker, Trojan, or Virus that's wedged its way into your desktop. This can happen because Internet Explorer is an integrated part of Windows. I can almost guarantee that you have Active Desktop turned on, and a hijacker running.
You are going to have to download and run HijackThis. Note: read the instructions on the linked page very carefully (the main download link is broken -- use one of the mirrors). Do not actually remove anything from your startup or Registry until you have posted the log that it generates and are given explicit instructions on what to remove. You should also read my article on this subject (in my signature below) followed by this article--that I was planning to write, but Grinler beat me to it :cheesy:.

Help!!! Pls kindly assist. Below is my log file which I managed to capture finally. Cant even used hijack/spybot to fix/install to my pc cos the 'worm' may have concealed the installer filename(eg.hijack & spybot). The 2 applications close promptly after few seconds even though after I rename those installer filenames. Had scanned and cleaned with latest Ad-aware definitions but in vain.

Wow- you've got a lot of crap in there. I'm no expert, but start with getting rid of the MTC.dlls and the questmod.dll . Those were in my system too

Just click on the fix after check box in hijack this

Help!!! Pls kindly assist. Cant even used hijackthis to fix those checked box on my pc cos the 'worm' may have caused the application close promptly after few seconds. Where got time to react to check those boxes???

You are not without recourse. Try running HijackThis in Safe Mode and see if that gives you enough time to delete the offending startups. There are also alternative tools available to kill the offending processes, including CodeStuff Starter and PrcView. Either of them should work; Starter has a "nicer" interface and can also be used to delete stuff from the startup list, like HijackThis or MSConfig.

Kill the following process and delete the file: C:\Documents and Settings\Admin\Desktop\AAAA.exe

Get rid of the following (use HijackThis to check these off and "fix checked"):

Have Hijackthis fix these as well:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Network Service] C:\WINDOWS\svhost.exe -sr -0

Once done, delete the C:\WINDOWS\svhost.exe file.

Also- FlashGet is Adware; you should remove it. Have HJT fix all entries related to Flashget and delete any FlashGet folders/files that you find on your system.
