A few targeted, safety-first steps to add to 's thread. has the right idea about cleaning from Safe Mode, but with Windows 98 SE it helps to be explicit about backups and a non-destructive workflow so the system can be restored if something goes wrong.

Booting and a safe workspace — In Windows 98 hold the CTRL key (or F8 on some machines) at boot to get the Startup Menu and choose Safe Mode; this prevents most third-party code from loading so you can work safely. If that menu is not present you can enable it from the System Configuration utility before rebooting. (Microsoft documents the Safe Mode options for Win98.) (ftp.zx.net.nz)
(Reference: Microsoft KB: How to start a Windows 98-based computer in Safe Mode — use that menu rather than trying to delete files while the system is running normally.)

Backup the registry before touching startup entries — Use the built-in Registry Checker (ScanReg/ScanRegW) to create a registry backup before removing or editing anything. A registry backup gives you a straightforward restore path if removing a file or an autorun entry breaks Explorer or other components. The Windows Registry Checker tool supports creating and restoring backups from MS-DOS or the GUI. (support.microsoft.com)

Finding and neutralizing suspect executables (non-destructive method) — from Safe Mode: note file names and timestamps in the Windows folder, then disable them rather than immediately deleting (rename or move them to a quarantine folder on a separate drive). Reboot normally and confirm the system is stable and Internet Explorer launches. If stable, run updated antivirus and anti-malware scanners from a clean machine or boot disk to remove leftovers; if not stable, restore the registry backup or revert the renamed files. Also check Dial-Up Networking/Phonebook entries (old dialers often add unwanted connections) and change any online passwords after cleanup.

If there is uncertainty or IE still will not start after those steps, capture and post a fresh HijackThis log and a short list of the files you moved/renamed so helpers can review the exact entries before recommending deletions or registry edits.

Hi, Could I have some help, My email address is
Trying to get out something that should not be here, trying to get internet explorer to load.(Its not at the moment)

You have several issues here so will probably take a couple of posts to get through it.

Download CWShredder from & run it. Select the fix button & it will get rid of everything related to CoolWebSearch that is stored in it's database. Close ALL windows, including IE, before running CWShredder. REBOOT.

To help prevent this from happening again, install the patches for the vulnerabilities that this hijacker exploits by going here for your critical updates.

Download & instal Adaware from
& update it B4 scanning.
In settings under 'scanning,' have it set to
'scan within archives,'
'scan active processes,'
'scan registry,'
'deepscan registry'
'scan my IE Favourites for banned URL's,'
'scan my host's file.'
In 'tweaks' under 'scanning engine' set it to 'unload recognised processes during scanning.'
Also in 'tweaks' under 'cleaning engine' set it to 'Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion' & 'let Windows remove files in use at next reboot.'
Select 'activate in-depth scan' before starting scan.
When the scan is finished select 'next.'
Remove what it finds by placing a check in the box to the left of the object. Reboot

Download & instal Spybot S&D from here Update it B4 scanning. Go into settings & have it check for Beta releases also & download if available.
After the scan is complete, have spybot fix everything marked RED.
On the page that first opens when you start Spybot there is an option to immunise, you should do this. In the immunise section there is also a link to download Spywareblaster. Download that & you can keep it updated by selecting the same link that you use to download it. Reboot

Reboot after doing this & post another log please.

I will ask a mod to split this to it's own thread.

Could I have some help as to what to delete on this as the internet explorer does not load.

Will do, but you need to post your latest log. As you can see by the time & date, you have posted the same log twice. If you have followed my previous directions, save the new scan log & post it back here.

Reboot into safe mode following the instructions & navigate to & delete

C:\PROGRAM FILES\SURFASSISTANT.COM< folder
C:\WINDOWS\BIOR.exe< file
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSZTCE.EXE< file ( probably will not find this one)

Search in c:\windows you WILL find a random numbered or series of random numbered .exe files something like 70000045.exe please find and copy their names & locations, they need to be fixed whilst in safe mode. They are related to 1 0n 1 dialer & the MSZTCE.EXE file.

Reboot normally.

they need to be fixed whilst in safe mode. They are related to 1 0n 1 dialer & the MSZTCE.EXE file.

How do I Fix these then?

Sorry, How do I fix these files.

I have no way of knowing what the random named files will be, but they will be very similar to what I posted B4.

You need to go to your Windows folder & search for files like the one in bold. You then right click on them & delete them.
