Greetings once again. I recently visited a site that ended up downloading a bunch of stuff on to my computer earlier today. McAfee started going nuts about 3 hours ago, and i've been trying to figure out exactly what's going on.

This Forum has always served me well and helped me when ever i have needed it so i come to you once again for some assistance. I've tried to CWshreader, adware, spybot, McAfee's own scan, and updated my windows system again. Everything is up todate, thus i was hoping that perhaps someone might be able to point me in the right direction. I'm not even sure what i have, but this is the Hijackthis log:

— summary and a focused action plan you can follow now.

First things first: isolate the PC (unplug the network or disable Wi‑Fi) and copy personal files (documents, pictures, mail archives) to external media — do not copy programs or .exe/.scr files. Disable System Restore before cleaning so malware cannot hide in restore points; re-enable it only after the machine is clean.

Cleaning workflow (safe, stepwise)

  • Boot to Safe Mode (F8) and run one or two up‑to‑date scanners. If current tools can’t fully clean, use a bootable rescue environment (rescue/antivirus ISO) so rootkits can be detected and removed.
  • Use an autorun/startup inspector to find persistence points (startup, services, Winlogon/notify, scheduled tasks) and remove only clearly malicious entries; export a backup of the registry/startup list before changing anything. Autoruns (Sysinternals) is ideal for this.
  • Clean the browser: remove unknown entries from IE security zones, reset IE to defaults, and disable or remove unknown BHOs/toolbars via Manage Add‑ons. Clear temporary files and the browser cache.

If the machine is stubborn

  • If infections persist after multiple scans and manual cleanup, a clean reinstall of the OS is the safest route — especially on older, unsupported systems. Windows XP is no longer supported and remains highly vulnerable; consider migrating to a supported OS after backing up data.

Aftercare

  • Re-enable System Restore, update all software where possible, and change passwords for accounts accessed from the infected machine. Monitor financial accounts and watch for identity theft. For step‑by‑step removal help (post cleaned logs pulled with Autoruns or HijackThis), refer to community malware removal guides and forums such as BleepingComputer.

Note: the tool you called "CWshreader" is likely "CWShredder" (CoolWebSearch remover). If more detail is needed, post a fresh Autoruns or HijackThis log and a short list of current symptoms.
