I've been going solo on this trying to fix it but banging my head....nothing seems to completely solve things.

Brief summary and practical next steps that build on ’s advice and address the Win98 specifics that reported. The HijackThis output shows multiple unknown startup processes and browser/ActiveX entries; those are classic signs of adware/rogue “security” and popup installers. The ewido installer failing on Win98 is expected—ewido’s anti‑malware was written for Windows 2000/XP and later, not 9x. (wilderssecurity.com)

Recommended workflow (safe, ordered):

  • Take a full backup of personal files (documents, mail, bookmarks) to removable media and unplug the PC from the network to stop further downloads/calls home.
  • Capture a fresh HijackThis log in Normal mode (so active startup items are shown), then reboot to Safe Mode (F8) for removals. Use HJT’s “fix” only on clearly malicious or unknown items; leave known legit entries (AV, IM, printer software) alone.
  • Use Win98‑compatible scanners: legacy Spybot S&D (version series that supports 9x) and an Ad‑Aware 6.x family installer are proven for Win98-era cleanups. Run them in Safe Mode after HJT fixes, allow them to remove or quarantine, and save the logs for review. (safer-networking.org)

Notes about persistent files and PendingFileRenameOperations:

  • When a file cannot be deleted because it’s in use, scheduling deletion on reboot (the PendingFileRenameOperations behavior or using a “killbox” tool) is normal and safe; accept the reboot and check results afterward. If items resist removal, perform an offline scan by connecting the drive to a clean machine or booting a rescue environment and scanning before reinserting. Manual registry edits are powerful but risky—only remove keys that match known malicious entries.

Long‑term recommendation:
Windows 98 reached end of extended support in 2006 and no longer receives security updates; modern AV vendors have dropped 9x support. For reliable protection and to stop recurring infections, migrate to a supported OS or rebuild/reinstall after a full wipe. (en.wikipedia.org)

Please download it is a free version of the program.

  1. Install ewido anti-malware
  2. When installing, under "Additional Options" uncheck..
    • Install background guard
    • Install scan via context menu
  3. Launch ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double-click it.
  4. The program will now open to the main screen.
  5. When you run ewido for the first time, you may get a warning "Database could not be found!". Click OK. We will fix this in a moment.
  6. You will need to update ewido to the latest definition files.
    • On the left hand side of the main screen click update.
    • Then click on Start Update.
  7. The update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
(the status bar at the bottom will display ("Update successful" )

If you are having problems with the updater, you can use this link to manually update ewido.

Once the updates are installed do the following:

  • Open up Ewido
  • Click on scanner
  • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
  • You will be prompted to clean the first infection.
  • Select "Perform action on all infections", then proceed.
  • Once the scan has completed, there will be a button located on the bottom of the screen named Save report
  • Click Save report.
  • Save the report .txt file to your desktop or a location where you can find it easily.
  • Close ewido anti-malware.

Reboot.
