Win Min error when shutting down windows 98

Hi....I am new to this, so please forgive me if I have started a new thread when I shouldn't have, etc. I am running Windows 98 on my computer, and I keep getting a Win Min error when shutting down. Along with that, my homepage is constantly reset, I have things in my Favorites that I didn't put there, and it has slowed my computer down. I ran the hijackthis.exe that I had read about, and I saved the log. I don't want to delete anything until I know exactly what I need to delete. I am going to post it with this message, and if anyone can help me I would really appreciate it!! I'm far from a computer whiz, so please excuse any questions that may seem stupid. Thanks!

First of all we have to remove Newdotnet, either from add/remove programs, or by going here. & scrolling down to the uninstall tool.

Close all (browser) windows & rescan with hijackthis. When the scan is finished place a check in the box to the left of the following entries & click 'fix checked' :

I did as you said, and rescanned and fixed, then rebooted in safe mode. I didn't find any of the things listed to delete after I rebooted into safe mode. That is, if I was looking in the right place. Also, I haven't been able to use my CD-ROM drive, or my 3 1/2 in either....could that be related? I bought Norton Antivirus to put on my computer, and haven't been able to because it wouldn't start from the CD. And for some reason I can't print either....I just assumed it is all caused by this same mess.

Hello,

If I may, it is not a good idea to run two anti-virus technologies at the same time. You have McAfee. You should remove that before trying to Norton yourself. Second, you might consider saving your data to another drive, and formatting and starting over. Third, have you given any thoughts on how to prevent re-infection?

Hi there. I had wondered if I should delete McAfee if I was going to try Norton, but with all this other stuff happening, that was one question I forgot to ask. Thanks for the suggestion. My McAfee is so outdated, so I think I will remove it before trying to install Norton again. As for preventing this from happening again....I downloaded the programs suggested in the other posts (adaware, spybot, etc...)....do you have any other suggestions? You don't realize how much you don't know about computers until something like this happens. Makes me realize how very little I know! And even after all the other, I am still getting sent to that same search engine instead of my yahoo homepage (any-find.com), and I am still getting the win min error message when I shut down.

Download CWShredder from here & run it. Select the fix button & it will get rid of everything related to CoolWebSearch that is stored in it's database. Close ALL windows, including IE, before running CWShredder. Reboot.

To help prevent this from happening again, install the patches for the vulnerabilities that this hijacker exploits by going here for your critical updates.

Reboot after doing this & post another log please.

I have tried installing the critical updates and such from the microsoft website, but it just sits on 0% when it is scanning for new updates. The other day I left it all day, and it sat at 0%. What am I supposed to do? Thanks!

The update problem could be a firewall stopping it. I had trouble when I had Norton installed & had to shut it down temporarily to do the update.
Your infection is still there. Make certain that you are closing ALL windows, Internet Explorer & any folder windows or CWShredder will not fix anything. If that is not how you did it, then try it again in safe mode.
Reboot into safe mode following the instructions here

Otherwise do this. Close all (browser) windows & rescan with hijackthis. When the scan is finished place a check in the box to the left of the following entries & click 'fix checked' :

As far as the firewall and not being able to download the updates from Microsoft.....as far as I know I am not behind a firewall. As of right now, I don't have Norton on here, or anything else that I know of that would cause it. I wasn't going to install Norton until I could get McAfee off here (which you read in my other thread).

Hello,

There ARE registry hacks out there that will prevent a user from getting information from Windows Update. I do not have the Q number in front of me, but know of a registry setting that will disable updates. You could also have a problem having not enough space on the drive available for the scan. Then again, you are running Win 98, and that OS might be considered "DEAD" and no more updates coming out.

I think there is something still wrong though...but I am not sure. Yesterday after I did everything you suggested, I was able to log off and not get the win min error, and everything else seemed to be fine. I was even able to uninstall McAfee, which I wasn't able to do before. But last night when I logged off I received an error message about a program not responding, and if I wanted to wait or end task....but it didn't say what program it was.

Every now & then I get the same error. All have been due to me shutting down the computer before a program had managed to close. Try shutting down a few times to see if the error persists.

I'll try that....thanks a lot for your help! I ran the adaware, spybot, and cwshredder all again this morning. The first two picked up a couple of low-risk threats, which I deleted, and CWShredder came up clean. Hopefully it's taken care of. As for the windows update, for now I just ordered their free cd of updates, and when I get that I will install them and then try the windows update page again. Hopefully eventually I will get that straight soon too. :)
