I have been plagued by About.Blank browser hijacker. I have tried the various remedies posted here and other helpful sites, but all have in common at some point, to find in the registry
HLM\software\mircosoft\windowsnt\currentversion\windows\\appinit_dlls

My probelm is that when I get to the currentversion folder, there is no windows folder in it. I have tried searching my registry for AppInit_Dlls and AppIint_DLLs but it is not found.

I am running ME, does that make a difference?

I am also running spybot, adaware, zone alarm, and norton symantic (sp?).
Adaware gets rid of about.blank, but only until I turn my browser off and back on.

Thanks

Quick clarification and a focused removal plan for Windows ME (about:blank hijacker).

Windows ME is not NT-based, so the NT-only AppInit_DLLs registry location referenced in several guides will normally be absent on ME — that explains why could not find it. On ME the usual persistence mechanisms are different: Browser Helper Objects (BHOs), Run / RunServices startup entries, search-assistant/homepage changes and small loader EXEs/DLLs placed in Windows or Temp folders. ’s suggestion to use HijackThis is appropriate for locating those entries; the log already posted points toward a BHO/startup-style loader rather than an NT AppInit entry.

Practical, safe triage (make backups first)

  • Disconnect the PC from the network.
  • Backup the registry before editing (Windows ME):
    scanreg /backup
  • Boot to Safe Mode (or Safe Mode with Networking when updating tools) and update Spybot/Ad-aware signatures, then run full scans. Run HijackThis again and use the Fix option only for clearly suspicious BHOs, Run/RunServices or search-assistant/homepage entries — do not remove entries belonging to known, installed software (antivirus, multimedia helpers, etc.). When in doubt, check the filename or CLSID before removal.

Follow-up cleanup and checks

  • After removing registry entries, delete or rename the actual file while still in Safe Mode (renaming first gives an easy undo). If the file is locked, use an offline/delete-on-reboot approach.
  • Inspect the hosts file (C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\drivers\etc\hosts), clear Temporary Internet Files and cookies, and manually reset Internet Options search/homepage entries if needed.
  • Re-scan with updated tools to confirm removal.

Notes and fallback

  • ’s TrojanHunter is another option; verify compatibility with ME and use current definitions. If the hijack persists after removing registry entries and files, backing up personal data and performing a clean reinstall of ME is often the fastest way to guarantee removal. Always keep backups before making registry or file changes.

It is good that you followed those steps already and no Spyware affects all windows versions. You only have to do the final step which is using Hijack This! Its a program which is able to show and remove running processes. click here. After download and unzipping. First close all (browser) windows and click [Scan] and hijackthis will start scanning. After finishing click [Save log]. After saving notepad will come up. Now select all, copy&paste it into here.

my hijackthis log

NOTE: I usually have a bunch of stuff disabled in my startup, but since the direction say to enable all startup items, I did so, even if they usually are disabled. I can give you the list, it is 16 items.

Thaks for your help

app_init is the initialization of applications, this means executables, possibly spyware, but I'm not sure.
Remove this one and it should cure your about:blank problem

These are unknown to me, but seem to be spyware, due to weird filenames
I do not recommend on removing them. But if your going to do it, be sure to back-up the filenames by renaming them or moving them to another directory.
