Hi,
I am in need of help to get rid of this. My homepage was hijacked and no matter how I changed the registries as recommended by microsoft, I was unable to delete the culprit.

After reading through some of the threads here, these were the stuff that I had done.

1. Delete the following values - Default_Page_URL value and the Start Page value in the following registry keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
HKEY_ LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
HKEY_USERS\Default\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

But realise the entry in the registry keys kept stuck there even though I am the administrator of my pc.

2. Performed an online virus scan using Trend MicroHouse and there was no virus detected. However, a later scan by Norton (which I bought later) showed that the pc was infected with these 2
C:\System Volume Information\_restore{987E0331-0F01-427C-A58A-7A2E4AABF84D}\RP43\A0003417.exe is infected with W95.CIH.damaged
C:\Documents and Settings\Awei\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\C9M7KX6B\002340[1].htm is infected with VBS.Bootconf
Norton managed to remove the first one but does not look like the second one got disinfected.

3. I then install Spy Bot Search & Destroy, updated it and fix all the red problems reported.

3. Still not able to fix the problem, I installed HijackThis v1.97.7 and this is the log. Hoping you can advise me on the next steps to proceed.

This thread documents a textbook persistent browser‑hijacker cleanup: a targeted removal tool plus safe‑mode deletion of the stubborn autostart component, then disabling System Restore to purge infected restore points. ’s advice to use a specialised remover and safe‑mode deletion, and ’s follow‑through (disabling restore, removing backup entries, rescanning) is exactly the pragmatic sequence that has historically cured CoolWebSearch‑style infections. (malwarebytes.com)

Why that sequence works: hijackers modify browser helper objects, toolbars, autostart entries and sometimes place copies inside restore/volume‑shadow storage so they reappear after a “clean.” Clearing restore points removes that hidden fallback, pre‑boot/offline scanners can catch components the running OS hides or locks, and a startup auditor reveals leftover services/scheduled tasks that must be removed. (learn.microsoft.com)

Practical, repeatable checklist (apply in the order shown):

  • Isolate the machine (disconnect network) to stop further data leakage.
  • Boot Safe Mode and run updated AV + an anti‑malware scanner; if items are still locked, run an offline/pre‑boot scan (Microsoft Defender Offline or a rescue disk) and remove detected objects.
  • Use Autoruns (Sysinternals) to inspect and disable/delete suspicious BHOs, toolbars, Run/RunOnce entries, services and scheduled tasks; reboot and re‑scan.
  • Disable System Restore to purge old restore points, reboot, verify cleanliness, then re‑enable and create a fresh restore point.
  • Patch Windows and browsers, switch to an up‑to‑date browser, and change important passwords from a different (clean) device; enable MFA where available. (learn.microsoft.com)

If the hijack recurs or there’s evidence of credential theft, image user data and do a clean OS reinstall (or get a professional forensic/cleaning service). Rebuilding from known‑good media is the safest way to remove deeply persistent compromises. (support.microsoft.com)

Download CWShredder from & run it. Select the fix button & it will get rid of everything related to CoolWebSearch that is stored in it's database. Close ALL windows, including IE, before running CWShredder. Reboot.

To help prevent this from happening again, install the patches for the vulnerabilities that this hijacker exploits by going here for your critical updates.

Reboot after doing this & post another log please.

Hi Crunchie,

Thank you very much for the reply. But it looks like the hijacked registries still remain resistant to both CWS and Hijack. This is the log after running CWS and Hijack again.

Hello Crunchie,

Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Finally the problem is fixed!!!! In addition to the steps proposed, I also include these 2 additional steps:

1. Turn off system restore.
2. Go into regedit directly and delete all the registries that were supposed to be deleted and on realisation that the culprit registries had back up copies in the form of ****_bak. I also deleted those and whatever about:blank and values I found in the registries.

What a relief! I really thank you deep in my heart, you really make my day! I post here the fresh log after the steps and hopefully, with all additional prevention steps I had taken, will remove this irritant forever.
