Have you ever tried boiling yam leaves as a green?

Not yet, but I want to. I love all greens with a bit of brown sugar and some fatback (or bacon) cooked in with it.:) I have been eating a lot of plantains lately fried in wine and lime juice (so good) and fried banannas Cuban-style. Delicious. Fried food is great. ;)

And Whitecastles-- I grew up on them and still love them! Whenever I eat there I practically overdose on them. :cheesy:

wtf is a yam?

A yam is also known as a "sweet potato" in my country-- depends on what area of the States one lives in. I think the South calls them sweet potatos, the North, "yams". Or vice verse. I am from Ohio, originally-- I always call them yams. ;)

Russian Borscht and Beet Greens Salad with Balsamic Dressing

[Yiddish borsht, from Russian borshch, "cow parsnip" (the original base of the soup), borscht.]

This is a wonderful, rustic recipe for cold days such as these (it is low 20's here in NYC).

**NOTE: I rarely use proper measuring when cooking so you should estimate\modify this recipe for your preferences.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb stew beef
  • 3 large beets (fresh only)
  • 1 large onion
  • 1 carrot
  • 1/2 cabbage
  • 2 potatos
  • 1 yam
  • 1 tomato
  • salt
  • black pepper
  • dill
  • sugar
  • sour cream
  • olive oil
  • balsamic vinegar
  • dill pickle
  • Goat cheese (Feta)

Directions for Borscht

  1. Peel and wash beets. Save top greens and stems for salad. Chop into small cubes. Place cubes in cold, salted water to soak while you prepare other ingredients.
  2. Wash carrot, potatos, and sweet potato. DO NOT PEEL. Chop these into cubes.
  3. Cut stew beef into nice-sized slice\cubes. In pan or wok heat olive oil and saute sliced onions, cabbage, and diced tomatos until tender. Place beef in this pan and brown on heavy flame with vegetables. The meat will emit broth; Spoon\drain this off and save into a seperate bowl for use as stock in Bortsch.
  4. Begin to boil approximately 5-7 cups (give or take) of pure water in the pot you will be cooking the Borscht soup in.
  5. When browned, remove meat and all vegetables into seperate bowl. Drain beets from salted water and place immediately into same pan\wok …

same. christmas in britain is getting like it is in the usa

Christmas :-|. Yeah, I wonder if it can become any more trite. Honestly, I try to enjoy Christmas as I have quaint and sentimental memories of it from childhood (1970's), but things were different back then I think. Usually a week or two before Christmas I become depressed by it and more negative in general. Don't know why exactly.

This past year I went to dinner with family-- everyone looked absolutely thrilled about the holiday  Joking. Christmas was not mentioned once! :cheesy: This year was a bit different due to circumstances; my girl's brother just came back from Army Airborne training for holiday leave and will be shipping out to Iraq soon for ground duty in Baghdad. Her family was very somber. It was nice to be with her family and be included, though. I suppose that is what it is about.

On Christmas day what did I do? Came to Daniweb, coded some, played video games. No different than any other day. I think many, many folks in America are realizing the joke Christmas has become (but they cannot seem to break away from the sappy traditions).

Do what you feel best as you have always done.

Agreed with ~S.O.S.~ ;)

mattyd 89 Posting Maven Featured Poster

Definitely agree re: Christmas.

The last sentence is great. I wish it was like that for everyone. But I do think that the whole roses+chocolate+dinner+jewelry is a little excessive. Not that they're bad by any means, but the holiday shouldn't be about those things.

I agree with everything you say and I like how you say it. I like the holiday but not the pre-packaged crap pawned by every retail store in the nation. Believe me, my girlfriend is not the kind of girl that would swoon over a cheap box of chocolates or tacky jewelry no matter the price. She is an artist and her taste ranges from the beautiful and unique to the eccentic ; she does not expect anything on this day but if I get her anything it should probably be:

  • Retro\ vintage
  • something I make
  • something Japanese

Well, this year I got her something from the Sanrio store in Manhattan-- we are both Japan-obsessed and collect Hello Kitty\Sanrio objects so I know she will love it. Normally, I just make her stuffed animals from cloth, hand-sewn. We have a huge collection of these (she makes them for me also).

I could rant and criticize so much about American\Western ideals (or lack thereof) concerning romance and love-- but I will not even start here. All I can say... it is sad for both women and men. Literally sad. Overpriced diamonds and American garbage chocolate does not really cut it-- this is not …

I do not actually really believe that most people feel that Valentine's Day is a false-hearted day, a commecrialized event only. Everything practically is commercialized these days so of course this will be to, correct? The real culprit for this case and topic of holidays to avoid is Christmas; I am a Christian and I am bloody disgusted by the American Christmas, honestly.

Valentine's Day gives people the chance to express their love if only for one day and it provides the memory and hopes for love if one is single at the time. This is sad in a way, I know, as love is spread everday for sure, but many people do not feel this way nor know how to exactly do this. Men, especially, are not very romantic as far as I can tell. But I am and it is a lovely holiday for those who dig it. Plus, pink is my favorite color so this Holiday makes me happy because of that and because I have a lovely woman to share this day with. Then again, everyday is Valentine's Day for us.

I like this holiday so much I would vote for it TWICE as the best holiday ever if the thread poll would allow me to.

Thanks for all your reply, guys :)

The idea is that by eliminating the need to scroll past two big rectangle ads to get to the quick reply box will promote more impulse posting among the community.

Yes, this is so true. I rarely used Quick Reply until the last few days actually-- it seemed a long drop to get to it easily and really I would always forget about it when it would of been and the best option for a simple reply. This makes it more convenient and therefore offers better, overall site function.

All these "small" changes (improvements) will really make a usability difference for everyone. I really like what I see. :)

I have to protest against this super-small Quick Reply box. What is the point of having it small? I know it's supposed to be a "quick" reply, but this seems a little too "quick" for me.

I think this is a positive change in a design sense. It does not have to be larger (it could even be a bit smaller). The placement of the box along with the other element(s) gives it a more 'boxy" and geometric look. I really like that. This is just my opinion.

Which do yo like better? I think the grey makes the bright yellow less overwhelming so you're more apt to spend more time studying the page. But I do like the yellow too ... which is why I'm so undecided that I'm keeping the old color scheme on the search pages and such until I make up my mind.

The second one is better, definately (the white and grey). The other with the pale peachy\cream tone... no.

Difficult to see? I see it just fine. Maybe you should adjust your monitor. ;)

Also, so many people on this site complain about colors that "make my eyes bleed!!" when used in posts-- I have never quite understood this; The format options offer standard font color choice, bolding, italicizing, etc, but when people (God forbid!) use colors all the "professionals" supposedly in the "know" complain.:confused: I am a painter-- I like color! to highlight and expound upon the text.

My recommendation; perhaps Dani can:

  • remove all extraneous thread formatting (font color change)
  • Make an all black-and-white site for those with color issues. :p
