I assume you are talking about the 2007 version. You are correct the new version is horrible but I use the 2005 version which I find much more Java oriented and less Eclipse like.

What you could do is create a folder and put all of your images in it. Sort it by name and that should place duplicates next to each other. Then delete them one by one (or in groups) that way.
