Well as long as it works we are all smiles then.

I was just wondering about the Superantispyware cos I never heard of it so thought something like that could cause the problem sometimes. No need to uninstall it though. Specially if recommended by IT pro. Any further issues, give us a shout. Good Luck.

Raj

Thanks, I think I will go back to using Spybot anyway as the superantispyware was very slow. I just reached the point where I was so frustrated I would have tried just about anything, including the hi tech option of hitting it with a hammer!

The IT pro worried me a bit as his only other recommendation was to completely reinstall windows ( he didn't even mention system restore ), but as I was desperate I couldn't complain too much.

Thanks again

Nothing seems to be out of ordinary on the log here unless i missed out something apart from the SUPERAntiSpyware which sounds a bit dodgy. Can you restart the system in safe mode and then see if you can get somewhere.

See if there has been something that has been installed without your prior knowledge.

Raj

Dear Raj

Thank you very much for your reply.

The superantispyware was only installed yesterday, on the recommendation of a friend who works in IT. I will delete it just in case it is dodgy, but at least I know it wasn't that that caused the initial problem.

In the end I did a system restore to the day before the problem happened - it took two attempts but so far seems to be working. Fingers crossed it stays that way!

Thanks again

Eve

Please bear with me, I am just a beginner!

Some background - while I was out my partner installed a new monitor and changed the wallpaper. While doing so a message popped up (I assume from the firewall) about a program trying to connect, but he clicked 'deny'.

The next time I rebooted all the desktop icons had vanished along with the taskbar and start button. I cannot right click on the desktop and can only access programs through task manager. The explorer.exe file seems to have gone too.

I tried running Spybot but the computer keeps rebooting itself mid scan. Here is the Hijack This log - I hope someone can help, and thank you in advance.
