I recently came back from a Europe trip for five months, and when I arrived home I took my computer system from out of the garage from which it was stored and tried booting it back up. For some reason my hard drive died. It wasnt detecting it on my bios and whenever I tried to load from it, I was going a harddrive boot error message. Anyways I went out and bought a new hard drive, replaced the old one and attempted to reinstall XP Home edition. I have an XP Home Edition Service pack 2 disc burned that …

Yesterday I followed a thread trying to learn to lock file folders using the cacls in the command window. I thought I'd use the temp file folder as my target, thinking that it was the most innocent folder I had. I was able to lock it, but now I can't unlock it. Here is the code that I used to lock it: cacls %temp% /G %username%:R it asked me: Are you sure <Y/N> I replied Y, and it returned "processed dir: C:\DPCUME~1\HASLAM~4.AFT\LOCALS~1\Temp I could confirm that I was unable to save anything to the temp folder. So I then wanted …

I am trying to fix problems on Windows XP Home edition SP2 accessing CD or DVD discs. The system doesn't seem to recognize discs inserted into the drive. I installed a new drive, a LITEON DVD/CD re-writer, to replace an older drive that seemed to stop working. Yet, the new drive fails in a similar way to the old drive that I just replaced. The drive appears in the BIOS, in the Device Manager, and in Windows Explorer. But it doesn't recognize a new disc inserted into the drive. If I reboot the system with a disc present in the …

Here's a question for you: I often use remote desktop to connect to my office pc. Often times, I'm writing a document on the office pc and I need to include a screenshot of an application etc. Over RDP, how do I make the office pc take a screen shot and have it pasteable? When I attempt to take a screen shot over RDP, it takes a screen shot of my RDP session, (ie it's my local pc taking the screen shot, not the office pc), and the image is not pasteable by the office pc into the document. Anyone …

I have a dial up modem 56k and I could get on the net fine for a long time, but something happened to my network connection and it isn't there anymore. I tried setting up a new connection but I can't because my computer does not detect the modem anymore. Does anyone have an idea why it doesn't?

I cannot access my Toshiba External HDD. When I use chkdsk, It complains "Unable to determine volume version and state, chkdsk aborted". I cannot think of any other way to restore it. I don't have access to buy recovery software so, freeware is preferrable. Thanks all

Hi, Due to my laptop having a strange COM port problem I decided to try and fix it by doing a 'repair' with my Windows 2000 Professional disk. When I put the disk in, it asked if I wanted to 'upgrade' and keep all my existing software or 'full install' and lose everything. I chose upgrade and it spent some time gathering information, building drivers etc... When it rebooted it came up with a Setup screen that said it was installing devices such as keyboard, mouse. (During this time your screen may flicker etc). It gets about half way through …

I cannot access the serial port, COM1:. I used to be able to but now any app, such as Hyperterminal, that tries to open COM1: puts up a small info window that says "Unable to open COM1. Please check your port settings." Any idea what might be causing this? According to Device Manager the port is working correctly. I'm wondering if another auto started app that I don't know about has opened the port. Is there any way to find out what apps have opened the serial ports on the PC? I'm running Win XP home with all service packs …

Just a quick question. Does anyone have an opinion as to wether it is best to Import or Add Data file when using Outlook .pst files after a re-install and you are putting the customers data back onto the machine. I would normally use Import to put all contacts and emails back in Outlook. But just wondered if it was best to use add data file instead. Your thoughts are most welcome. Thanks GBMicros

which is not possible. I have a dell e1505 running xp So I bought this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822145113 and this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817392009 Perhaps of note is that the HDD is OEM. I'm not really sure if that plays into any of the following. Installed HDD into enclosure per instructions and connected it to laptop. Heard that little sound that windows recognized new device. So I go to my computer and click on my new removable F: drive. It asks me to insert a disk. Huh? That can't be. Open up acronis backup software and it only recognizes my boot disk and will not …

Here is the order of what happened. Some of it seems weird: 1. I downloaded a web page with Firefox Save Page As. The site should be trustwoirthy (a local newspaper). 2. I edited the HTML file with Notepad to remove everything (ads, scripts, etc) from the page except the text I wanted to keep. I saved it as a .txt file. 3. I opened the .txt file and fomatted it with Word 2007. I then saved it with Save As as a .docs file. 4. I then made a small change (adding the date at the bottom) and hit …

It's been over a year now since XP has died and i'm feeling guilty about it. I am very lucky to still have my 3 copies which are in the original cases with unused product keys, so I decided to install it on a desktop that i've been given from someone. To my surprise I can actually play DOS Games again, but does anyone else miss or like XP still? I've seen that airports still use them a lot and the OP is still popular in such a way. Microsoft still doesn't know that there are still users out there …

My brother has Windows XP with a large number of art programs that don't work in newer versions of Windows. Last thrusday, he got a an art file from a colleague with a .rar extension. He downloaded WinZip to open it. It would not open the art file. Now the computer does not recognize any file type. Double-clicking any icon on the desktop or in windows explorer (My Computer) opens a dialog box saying the computer was unable to recognize the file type. The only suggested programs the dialog box suggests are Windows Picture and Fax Viewer and Notepad. The …

Hello, a few days ago my computer was being really slow so I decided to restart it, after doing so I could no longer open internet explorer. When I tried to open 'my computer' all the shortcuts on my desktop disappeared for a second and I could only see my background, but then all the icons would return but 'my comptuer' didn't open. I tried to open other programs, some worked and some just wouldn't open Currently I'm using Mozilla instead of Internet Explorer which seems to be working fine. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Hi all, I just joined the forum hoping to find an answer to this problem. When I try to open "My eBooks" folder in Win XP Pro, I get an error message that says "My eBooks is not accessable" "the file or directory is corrupted and unreadable". The first thing I tried was system restore. No luck. I've tried "chkdsk /F" and it won't run...it says "the volume is in use by another process". I've tried scheduling it to run at next startup, but it still won't run. It says something about "being a non-windows disk" Running "chkdsk' by itself …

I have Windows XP (which I usually LOVE) on my HP Pavilion a820n desktop computer. I recently had to do a reinstall of XP, due to removal of an anti-virus software which (apparently) corrupted my computer. After doing a clean full reinstall of XP, some of my drivers are missing (most notably, my Audio driver). I went to the HP website, but their software could not scan my computer (apparently not XP friendly). So, I tried to do a manual installation of the driver - not an Update - the actual driver. It will not install. I don't know what …

Hello Anyone knows how I can get and install MediaCenter on a Windows XP SP3 machine? I've seen some versions of the OS itself, like Windows XP Media Center Edition etc, but since I already have a licensed version of Windows, is it possible just to get the Media Center part and install it? I've tried tools like XBMC, but it seemed to be using much processing on the machine, slowing it down at times...

It is only happening with this one client - I have not had dfficulty reading older PowerPoints from others. I don't have any problems with Excel or Word documents, only PowerPoint. I have not been able to find documentation on this at the Microsoft support site, or via …
