Hey jbennet, I usually type my messages out clearly. You gonna hand me some rep for that too? </sarcasm>

I mean, holy crap, is that what the rep system is for? No wonder it's so broken.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

ding ding ding... we have a winner. :P

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

why not better work it out an even more simple way... get your string's length and create an array of characters as long as the string, which will substitute your string in the rest of the program. This way you can compare your guess individually with each element in the array...

i don't know... maybe it can make things a bit more simple...

That's about what WaltP suggested :icon_wink:

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

It's also good to know a bit about your architecture. Some operations will take longer than others (multiplication and division usually do IIRC). But you'll want to make sure your code is streamlined in the right places first and foremost.

Other things you can do:
- data caching
- using unsigned vars,
- use inline functions (new compilers do this implicitly though)
- use registers.
- Finally I hope you've had a look at what everyone else has said in this thread.

I've never heard of using unsigned being "optimized." How's that one work? The inline and register keywords are (anymore) just hints to the compiler, it'll usually do what it thinks is best unless you give it specific flags.

More like 17 years and 117 days if your profile's accurate. Unless you're using a system based on units of about 1400 days. C'mon, not like people are going to track you down based on your age and sex...

If you'd read this thread, you'd see we discussed that having newbies using the rep system from the get go would make it a lot less credible...

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Jeez christina>you, you have 2100+ posts in like 2 months? I'm speechless.

There's like 2 or 3 discussions about it now, whether we should edjumacate the newbies about it, whether the system if effective, etc... And now people are using it at times that IMHO they shouldn't be, just because it's on their minds.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Depends on what you're optimizing for. In general, it's fine to just use efficient algorithms and let the compiler do the nitty-gritty. It doesn't really matter how well you optimize something if you optimize the wrong part.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Retrospectively, I liked it a whole lot better before people started making a big deal of it a week ago...

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Heh, that request was once made by me, but was rejected saying that it would just make people go out for vengeance when they get a bad rep and would hamper community building.

And considering that after being a member for so long, when you suddenly start asking for this feature, its a clear indication that someone doesn't whole heartedly agree with you in the Geek's Lounge. :P

I totally understand that, and I even felt the same way a bit. I'm just getting a little irked that simply expressing my opinion is taking down my rep, and I'd like to just ask people why they're marking me down. I know I've made some bad posts, but I don't want to participate in a discussion if I know people are just going to give negative rep for my views and my [sometimes direct, sometimes oblique] way of expressing them.

Another reason it's good for newbies to not give rep is that things would get skewed pretty easily. If you have someone come to Daniweb for the first time and ask a question, then rep the person that answers the question because they think it's the right thing to do, some of the users will get a lot of rep just for answering "use int main instead of void main()" sort of things (bad example, but you get the idea). When regular members give rep, they have a better idea of an outstanding post.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

You could just go to bed and save yourself the hassle... :icon_rolleyes:

@ the follwing conversation:

(red=republicans and blue=democrats, for all you brits out there!;))

Ahh, here blue = conservative party, red = new labour.

lol really? The complete opposite.. interesting..

IIRC the basic platform for American conservatives and British conservatives are also approximately opposite in nature. Makes political discussions really confusing on an international forum. I'm typically not very interested in politics though, so don't quote me on that.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

huhh

Infacrtion, i am confused...

It seemed like a safe way to express my opinion... ;)

lol post count = inversely proportional to brain size and number of useful posts.

Seems accurate for the GL. Some people have lots of useful posts though ;)

Why not just use an int? Let 0 be false and anything else be true, like in C.

Also, please learn to use [code] and [/code] tags when you post, so we can read your code.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Another thing I'd change is automatic signing of rep. When I get rep, I want to know who it was from. Especially the last week or so...

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

The tongue sticking out unwanted connotations. If I want to stick the tongue out, I'll use :p but when I do ;) I want a wink without a tongue.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Omg guys, please keep the hijacking a little contained. Please.

Could we get a wink to match the new smiley set? I'd use the old one if I knew what the text code for it was...

Independent, moderately conservative, and therefore tend to vote for Republicans. I vote on platform, not party. Not much of a Libertarian presence around here (and those that are around have horribly written platforms and no chance of winning)

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

So, the VT thread is closed, and then we hijack this one to talk about its closure for a page? Of course, this one had already died, so I shouldn't complain much...

The point of a "core curriculum" is to create intellectually well-rounded people. Obviously, everyone would rather study something they're interested in than something they aren't. However, that would create a society of people with nearly complete disjoint sets of knowledge, which would make information sharing much less effective than it currently is (which isn't much, already...)

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

It subtracts from your total rep (CP tell you the sum). Other than that, no biggie AFAICT

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Depends on the project. 35-40k lines isn't really that big in the grand scheme of things. For very large apps, though, compiled languages (C, C++) would probably have noticeable advantages in performance though. I don't know how the JVM actually handles programs when it's executing (e.g. keep all of it in memory at once vs. dynamic loading), so I can't say for sure though...

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

It matches the type you use when you call it to choose the correct one.

Btw, <iostream.h> is deprecated. Use <iostream> instead. ;)

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

I gave you some rep. And a comment.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

What is the color of a bad rep. (Good one is a green)

Orange. It's usually hard to come by, but I have a knack for it in heated discussions :$

I think you can also sort the member list by rep to see who has the most or least (and yes, there's a couple with negative rep)

What again, if i may ask, the meaning of the stars "awarded" to some of you guys. And you know what, The queen has 10 of them!:D. What do I do to earn them.

Stars are for 1000 posts.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

What can one say, they have too much time on their hands?

The obvious problem with threads that are several months to several years old is that the problem has already been taken care of in one fashion or another. There's always the possibility that the member doesn't even return here.

I would like to see a lock placed on threads after a specific amount of elapsed time. If anyone wanted to discuss the topic of a closed thread there is nothing to stop them from starting their own thread on the subject.

This would also stop one of the other problems that occur when people search through threads trying to answer their problem and find one that has their type of problem but doesn't solve their specific problem. The trouble starts when this person reopens a thread and says yeah...I have the same problem, did anyone find a solution?
Most members see a thread this old or with a number of posts and won't bother with it so the person posting in the old thread doesn't get the help that they need or would probably received if they had posted their own thread.

Totally agree. Maybe have a function like "Refer to this" instead of "Reply to this"?

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

sixteen thousand?? How do you do that?? My best record is only 2129.88m:S

You gotta get the specials just right... and use the aerials properly...

A friend got 1300 earlier today. He started at 88 degrees, 90% power, used his aerials first thing, and only hit the slow down guy once (nobody else). It was hilarious.

If it were some however-many light years closer, it could make for a nice vacationing place. Doubt it has life on it, but water and a similar size (which hopefully still allows for a similar atmosphere) would make it a good place to visit if we ever reach the point of long distance space travel.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

It depends on the function you're calling. It could be defined as void foo(T* someArray, int arraySize, int otherValue) or as void foo(T* someArray, int otherValue, int arraySize) . The second one sucks, but you'll just have to check.

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

Are you allowed to prefer your own posts, or does that count as bragging?

If you don't prefer your own posts, then you're a dummy for posting them. Quoting yourself like that however.... ;)

Infarction 503 Posting Virtuoso

With a growth rate of 30%, it'll be at 130% after each year. Since that compounds, you'll just have a simple formula of:
[tex]pop = 2000(1.3^x)[/tex]
This assumes the compounding happens at one instant per year, rather than calculating continuously.

Plug that in, and you'll get 5712

Good point RTC, I'm for retesting drivers. I also think there should be an age limit to STOP driving. I would lobby for at 70 years of age it's time to hang the keys up.

While I also support retesting, I don't think there should be an upper age limit. There are many drivers who are past 70 who still drive just fine. And with people keeping healthy into later years, that number will just go up. It's another case of the select few who are starting to wear down.
