There's no such thing as a brief history of C. However, Dennis Ritchie's web site has a nice description of it, so you can try to summarize that.

Advantages and disadvantages differ depending on the user. There is no correct answer to this question.

>(3) Why it was given the current name 'C'
This is a topic that is still debated. It's either the C in BCPL or the next letter of the alphabet after the direct parent language, B. This question was intentional, and never answered to my knowledge.
