Whats the LGPL and how does it differ from the GPL?

LGPL allows linking to non-GPLed stuff

e.g a commercial, closed source app could use an LGPL libary

LGPL is lesser General Public Licence. Its like GPL but with a little relaxed licensing policy. Its usually used for software libraries where the GPL restrictions do not apply to some software which is merely linked with the program.
