I have a slew of Java updates on my old Dell laptop, that take up over 1 GB of disk space. Do I need to keep them all? Can I remove the older ones without loss of performance?

Almost certainly you can delete them, but just to be safe, move them to a temporary folder somewhere else and see if anything breaks.

Strangely, I always get java updates as well that seem unnecessary (not that that is what you were complaining about). I tell my Vista OS to accept the updates but it seems to ignore me, and periodically, it keeps asking me to update again with what seems to be the same update I already accepted.
